Re: Hands on at Verizon

I'm actually considering the 2 XL. The biggest negative for me is that there is no upgrade path outside of paying off the phone in full since T-Mobile doesn't carry it. That's the biggest hurdle. Also I would have to give up on an awesome manual mode, QuadDAC, and superior audio recording quality and microSD expansion. I just have to really analyze if all that is worth a great auto camera and front facing speakers. I'm not concerned about having the latest version of Android as long as the phone runs fast and smooth and is secure. There's so many great choices right now but the V30 is my number 1 and the Pixel 2 XL is like a 1.a but with more compromises. But the camera and hardware could put me over the top. And the selfie camera is amazing on the Pixel. I'm just waiting for all the reviews and mainly my guy Juan Bagnell's Real Camera Reviews from both. Of course the third option is simply keeping the reliable V20.
I said "screw it".. I want things easy for awhile. Hahaha

Not sure why 2XL has a curved screen that meets the aluminum body while regular 2 has normal flat screen with beveled trim around it. It makes the 2XL look kind of ugly imo. The curved section has no functionality except to expand the side bezel. I would describe it as "overly styled". It just looks strange at first sight. Hopefully cases will compensate the odd design.

Pixel 2 in black though, looks handsome and all business. It would be the perfect Pixel2 design if it had higher screen ratio.

It's a personal opinion, I actually love how it looks. Everyone will have their own take on it which is a beautiful thing.

As far as the blue tint. I was watching a speed comparison videos on youtube. The v30 vs the note 8 for one and I clearly saw a blueish tint on the V30 especially against white backgrounds. So if the xl 2's screen was made by LG, I'd be worried if I was a xl2 user.

Has anybody seen the v20's screen? It's calibration is extremely poor and appears cool/bluish compared to other screens. Maybe it's just LG's settings that can be changed with software?

Unless they're displaying exactly the same image it's a useless comparison. As others have mentioned, the xl2 also has completely different color management thanks to Oreo that the V30 doesn't have.

Went to the Verizon store tonight. Since whatever new phone I get will be in a case, I don't care much about "premium feel, textures, etc. My focus was on screen quality, sound quality and comfortability in hand / one-handed use.

SCREEN: First thing I did was crank all 3 phones up to 100% brightness & changed all the wallpapers to be the same. Then went to the same all white Google home page. Between the Pixel 2 and 2XL, the 2XL was by FAR superior. Brighter, crisper, and more natural colors. As for this reported blue tint, surprisingly I found the smaller Pixel 2 suffered horribly from the "blueish tint" whenever the phone was tilted even slightly. It was that bad and on two different 2s on display. The 2XL had a little bit of it, but nowhere near as bad and only on extreme angles. About the same as the first XL. WINNER = 2XL.

SOUND: We played the new Star Wars trailer and the same music video on all phones to get the best The original XL has pretty darn good sound turned up full blast. 2XL was just as loud, but not as crisp. The 2 was louder than all 3! WINNER = 2.

COMFORT / ONE-HANDEDNESS: If you are thinking this one is a no-brainer, than you're right, the Pixel 2 is by far easier for me to use one-handed since it is smaller and narrower and the fact I have smaller hands (Insert small hand jokes here.) It's pretty much identical in size to my Samsung ATIV SE with a 5" screen too, so it was very comfortable and familiar for me to handle. 2XL was a tad easier than XL. WINNER = Pixel 2.

Overall, it's a tough call. just got a Brand New Pixel 128GB recently to play with for $350, but I put a black Pixel 2XL 128GB on pre-order last week as well since I was interested in the bigger screen and front facing speakers in the almost same dimensions. (And figured I could trade-in if I wanted to and still make $60)

Now, I feel somewhat torn. The Pixel 2XL has the far superior screen of the three, but the one handed use of the Pixel 2 feels the best for one-handed use. Decisions, decisions! Leaning towards just keeping the XL.

Re: Demo units should be in VZW stores 10/12

If I happen to walk by a Verizon store you can bet I'm going to check it out lol.
I'm not going to walk by one Sike...my delivery date is too far away (11/30/2017). I may have to go peep the Storm Trooper before then... . . .

I'm feeling okay with canceling the 2 XL and getting the 2 instead. The Pixel XL they sent me in September as a replacement for the 6P battery issue has white bezels and I figure the black ones on the Pixel 2 shouldn't bother me. Only thing I'm hoping for now is the Notification Light is also on the Pixel 2.

I looked at the Pixel 2 yesterday and it appears to have the LED in the same location as the 2 XL.

Does anyone know if the color management can be changed or if there are display settings to make the 2 xl look like the v30?

Just got back from Verizon and yes I have V30 with me and I can 100% say pixel XL 2 and V30 is same panel. (Slight blue in extreme angle)

Pixel 2 is better color overall.

The phone look nice but I think after I saw pixel XL I think I am happy with my V30. You can't go wrong with all flagship these days.

This is 100% not true. If it's the same panel, it's been calibrated completely different on the XL 2.

I stopped by two Verizon stores last night to check these things out. I preordered the XL so of course was most interested in it. Currently have a Note 8. And was able to bring a V30 beside the Pixels to compare. The color temp of the screen on the XL 2 looks horrible. Bad enough that I purposely sought out a other store because I was hoping it was just the demo unit. But store twos device had the same problem. The reds specifically look incredibly bad. More maroon then red. The V30 and Note 8 look very similar as it relates to how color renders. But the XL looks washed out and miscolored. I played with the display settings. The Pixels have a "vivid colors" toggle. That largely did nothing.

I'm just really disappointed. The standard size Pixels screen was acceptable. I could tolerate it. But if the XL 2 panel looks like that on the device I receive it'll go right back.

Oh. And the viewing angles comments above I observed as well. They just don't bother me as much.

Re: SO I went to Verizon today and compared my Pixel XL to the Pixel 2 XL

- IMO, P-OLED is not superior to glass (AMOLED) and probably cheaper to produce and lighter
I'm going to be picky, but the difference between LG's "P-OLED" and Samsung's "AMOLED" is not plastic vs glass: Samsung's curved AMOLED panels use plastic substrates (and LG's P-OLED has an active matrix for that matter). Samsung have just been making these for longer.

I'm pleased with the positive reports of the smaller Pixel 2 in this thread, since it's the first time I've ever pre-ordered a phone.

No it only has a toggle on or off for vivid display but the difference is not even noticeable. And i went to my second verizon store today just to make sure the screen i saw yesterday wasn't defective and unfortunately it wasn't. The viewing angles are horrible on the xl. Seriously disappointed.

Agree with this entirely. My only hope is that these are still preproduction units?

That said, my wife picked it up and immediately said "how much is this? It feels cheap as ****." Bah!

I was so set on this device. But somehow feel I'll be sticking with the Note 8.

Lol.. yeah I'm tired of reading posts that think amoled is still glass.... Samsung substrates can bend=plastic
