Re: Activating Nexus 6 on Verizon w/ new sim cards
Allow me to clarify for those of you who are confused...
When it comes to LTE devices, such as the Nexus 6 or Moto X or Galaxy S5, your service is dependent on the SIM card that is in your device, not the device itself. This is assuming the device's hardware is compatible with the Verizon network. The Nexus 6 is. The issue that everyone has is that Verizon's internal systems are setup to only allow the employee to input an "approved" IMEI number into their system. The reason for this is that prior to the LTE roll-out, the activation was dependent on the device's ESN and there was no SIM associated with standard CDMA service. However, since Verizon service is now reliant on the SIM and not the device itself, the SIM can be moved into any compatible hardware after it has been activated and it will work fine. By compatible, I mean not SIM locked to another carrier and contains the proper network radios.
When Verizon employees are activating service, their systems recognize the IMEI inputted and match it up with the proper size SIM card. This is to make it a more seamless process for all so that an employee doesn't accidentally waste a micro-SIM on a nano-SIM device, for example. The employees do not have the ability to input the IMEI of an approved device that uses a micro-SIM but then activate a nano-SIM along with it.
So when people that either have a SIM that's not nano or that don't currently have Verizon service go in to activate a Nexus 6, Verizon's system cannot match up the IMEI to the proper SIM card since it's not an officially approved device. However, if you have the IMEI of a Verizon-approved device from an friend's old phone (for example) that uses a nano-SIM, they should be able to activate your service using that IMEI which will then allow them to activate the nano-SIM. Afterwards, the nano-SIM can then be placed in your Nexus 6 and it should work without issue. You do not need to provide Verizon with the Nexus 6's IMEI at any time. Upon boot, the Verizon network will update itself with the IMEI on your device. But as long as the SIM is already activated, it has no dependencies on whether the device is officially approved or not.
So when the Verizon staff cannot help you activate a Nexus 6 "by the books", go easy on them. It's not their fault. By all technicalities, there is no official Verizon approved support for the Nexus 6. So being able to use it will always involve workarounds such as this unless that changes. It's buyer beware for anyone choosing to purchase a Nexus 6 to use on Verizon.
Oh, and just to make sure it's clear, I do not work for Verizon nor do I have any affiliation with them.
