Google Nexus 6 on Verizon

That is funny. I just went through chat on Verizon and told them I was trying to prepare to upgrade my line. I wanted a screen at least as big as my Note 2 and what would they recommend? Note 4 but Droid Turbo is the best phone they have then IPhone6. So I ask about Nexus 6. We don't offer that phone. Why not every other American carrier does? Well because the manufacturer doesn't want is to have it. We have the Turbo. Well it's a Google phone technically. Well we are the most profitable Cell phone company in the world why wouldn't we want to have the phone.? I said that's my question exactly. Also anyone notice there is no longer a mention of Verizon anywhere on GPS

Activating Nexus 6 on Verizon w/ new sim cards

So, after a 2 hour tech support call with Verizon and Motorola I have two Nexus 6s, active on my two unlimited data lines that had Galaxy Nexus' on them. So in a nutshell, I bought my Nexus 6s directly from Motorola. After picking them up I went into a Verizon store to try to activate them. They made a half ditch effort until the manager just gave me two new nano sim cards and let me walk out.

I then tried to to the swap via My Verizon on the web but it wouldn't take the IMEI numbers. I called tech support and they wanted to submit a request to get authorization to add them to the approved list. I insisted that we didn't have to do that and finally got them to try what I suspected would work.

Verizon's computers will not accept the IMEI numbers. I had a photo of a display model moto x IMEI handy. I gave the tech support that "bogus" IMEI number and the new sim card number. She put them on my account and when I turned the phone on it programmed the correct IMEI number and a reboot later everything is working. Then we repeated the process for my other line.

The tech support rep didn't think that would work. They said the sim card and phone IMEI all have to match the info on the account. But that is not the case.

If you already have a active nano sim card from another phone just put it in the Nexus 6 and your good to go. I had the old sim cards so I had to get new ones that went straight into the un-activated Nexus 6. Seems to be a lot of mixed information on the internet. But it does work.

Verizon is still listed at the bottom of the Nexus page, just like it always has... right above the disclaimer that availability and timing will vary by carrier.

Re: Activating Nexus 6 on Verizon w/ new sim cards

I am not sure I fully understand your 3rd paragraph. Did you use the same "bogus" IMEI number for both new Nexus 6 phones? Or did you in truth have two photos of two different Moto x phones, hence two different IMEIs?

And was the interaction with tech support over the phone or in the store? You obviously did not have two Mots x phones, how did the tech support person activate the phones? Or did they simply activate the sim card with the Moto x IMEIs, without the actual devices?

And so when you inserted the nano sim cards in the Nexus 6 phones, what happened? When you say, "programmed the correct IMEI", do you mean that when you powered up the Nexus 6 with the new nano sim card, you went through an activation process that replaced the existing IMEI (from Moto x) with the Nexus 6 IMEI? Was this process through your My Verizon web account or did you have to call support again? Now, when you check your account online, what phone is on your line, Nexus 6 or Moto X and what IMEI is shown?

Sorry for all the questions, but I am in the same situation. I have a new Nexus 6 (from Motorola) and a Verizon line with a non-operational phone. I requested and received a nano sim card from Verizon. I assume if I were to try to activate the new nano sim card on the old phone (micro sim) using it's IMEI number that would raise a question from Verizon. I also do not want to cut the old micro sim card because I plan to have the phone repaired and give it to a family member.

Thanks again for sharing your experience ...

Re: Activating Nexus 6 on Verizon w/ new sim cards

Just got my n6 from Motorola yesterday and made the mistake of going into a store for activation from my s5. I then called a verizon contracted store and the guy said he could take care of it for me, but he won't have any nano Sim cards until tomorrow.

Re: Activating Nexus 6 on Verizon w/ new sim cards

Allow me to clarify for those of you who are confused...

When it comes to LTE devices, such as the Nexus 6 or Moto X or Galaxy S5, your service is dependent on the SIM card that is in your device, not the device itself. This is assuming the device's hardware is compatible with the Verizon network. The Nexus 6 is. The issue that everyone has is that Verizon's internal systems are setup to only allow the employee to input an "approved" IMEI number into their system. The reason for this is that prior to the LTE roll-out, the activation was dependent on the device's ESN and there was no SIM associated with standard CDMA service. However, since Verizon service is now reliant on the SIM and not the device itself, the SIM can be moved into any compatible hardware after it has been activated and it will work fine. By compatible, I mean not SIM locked to another carrier and contains the proper network radios.

When Verizon employees are activating service, their systems recognize the IMEI inputted and match it up with the proper size SIM card. This is to make it a more seamless process for all so that an employee doesn't accidentally waste a micro-SIM on a nano-SIM device, for example. The employees do not have the ability to input the IMEI of an approved device that uses a micro-SIM but then activate a nano-SIM along with it.

So when people that either have a SIM that's not nano or that don't currently have Verizon service go in to activate a Nexus 6, Verizon's system cannot match up the IMEI to the proper SIM card since it's not an officially approved device. However, if you have the IMEI of a Verizon-approved device from an friend's old phone (for example) that uses a nano-SIM, they should be able to activate your service using that IMEI which will then allow them to activate the nano-SIM. Afterwards, the nano-SIM can then be placed in your Nexus 6 and it should work without issue. You do not need to provide Verizon with the Nexus 6's IMEI at any time. Upon boot, the Verizon network will update itself with the IMEI on your device. But as long as the SIM is already activated, it has no dependencies on whether the device is officially approved or not.

So when the Verizon staff cannot help you activate a Nexus 6 "by the books", go easy on them. It's not their fault. By all technicalities, there is no official Verizon approved support for the Nexus 6. So being able to use it will always involve workarounds such as this unless that changes. It's buyer beware for anyone choosing to purchase a Nexus 6 to use on Verizon.

Oh, and just to make sure it's clear, I do not work for Verizon nor do I have any affiliation with them.

Re: Activating Nexus 6 on Verizon w/ new sim cards

Took my Nexus 6 into the Verizon store this morning. Tech guy went & got a nano sim, after I told him that is what was needed.

For whatever reason, he could not activate it. I think initially it was because my old Note II was still powered on.

10 min later, he called Verizon. Another 10 min or so, boom! Nexus 6, activated! Surprisingly, they didn't charge me anything!

Maybe, they will charge my monthly bill, but as of right now, it's all good.....

Re: Activating Nexus 6 on Verizon w/ new sim cards

I am starting to see the big picture and why so much confusion. Success seems to be related to contact with helpful people. As with all things, some people will go the extra mile, some will not.

I am still looking for a process to follow that allows me to do the activation online.

Thanks

Re: Activating Nexus 6 on Verizon w/ new sim cards

So, if I understand what you provided. If I try to activate my Note 2 (micro sim) with a nano sim (to be later used in my Nexus 6), Verizon's system will not allow this, is that correct?

Does the use of an IMEI from a display model interfere with the operation of the display model? And can this temporary IMEI be used more than once?

The process would be to obtain the IMEI of a Verizon-approved device that utilizes a nano-SIM and process the online activation using it. Then, when you get the activated SIM, pop it in the Nexus 6.

I can't say for sure since I don't work for Verizon. But unless they change their protocol, that is correct.

Does using the IMEI from a Verizon approved nano sim device interfere with the operation of the original phone and can this IMEI be used more than once? I assume once the Nexus 6 activation takes place the original IMEI gets replaced with the Nexus 6 IMEI, is that correct?

Re: Activating Nexus 6 on Verizon w/ new sim cards

Wish I would have read this earlier. Got my n6 an took to get nano. Said it wouldn't activate. But I could get another phone an switch then do all this crazy stuff. I said no just give me nano an I'll call your tech support. Said we aren't allowed to do that. O OK. Called on my way home an they notated an told me to try another location an they can give me one no issues an call back

Re: Activating Nexus 6 on Verizon w/ new sim cards

When you guys log in to the VZW site does the portal recognize your Nexus 6 and actually show the picture? I had to identify my phone manually.

Verizon Nexus 5

Nexus 6...not 5. Has there been ANY word on when this thing is going to be carrier released? I know rumor was the 13th but obv that didn't happen. Figured by now AC would have some sort of update (or another Android outlet).

Re: Will XLTE work on the Nexus 6?

Why wouldn't it work? As long as the Sim is working it will use whatever phone picks up...

Some questions that are posted in the forum are incredible...

Re: Will XLTE work on the Nexus 6?

I read only certain phones worked on it...no need to be a jerk. My note 2 doesn't.

Jerk responses are way more common than dumb post.... :D

Even if the phone is compatible to the bands/frequencies needed for XLTE doesn't mean Verizon would allow it to work on their network that way... Right now about the only way to get a Nexus 6 to work on Verizon is if you already have a Verizon account, buy the Nexus 6 outright from Motorola or Google play and put your SIM in it.... I don't think you can activate one on a new account with Verizon even though it works fine with their network and you pay for it outright.... They've always been "Funny" like that when it comes to devices on their network...
