Google Nexus 6P USB-C car chargers?

Re: USB-C car chargers?

I am assuming the above image showing a 2940 mA charge is not from a car charger, correct?
Yeah that's from my wall charger. I don't think any car charger on the market can legitimately charge the 6P at 3A right now.

Re: USB-C car chargers?

Does anyone have a dashboard holder/cradle yet?

I'm using a ProClip holder, which holds my phone very well. It is a two piece system, you buy a piece that is specific to your car, it securely mounts onto your specific model. The second part is for the phone; I'm using a universal mount for large phones, it uses screws to adapt to the specific phone and case you are using. You can also order the iPhone 6 holder, since both phones are exactly the same width.

Re: USB-C car chargers?

Anker 2. Gen.*Astro E4 13000mAh External Battery with Power IQ and the Anker 24W Dual-Port Rapid USB Car charger will rapid charge your 6P when using OPO USB type C cable :)

Re: USB-C car chargers?

Any one think this might be worth a try?: search "YF Universal USB Car Charger 5V/3.1A Random Color" on Amazon. (sorry can't post links yet) Spec-wise it ought to be equivalent to the in-box wall charger with the 6P. This is assuming of course that with the in-box USB-A to USB-C it will pull the full amps.

Re: USB-C car chargers?

Careful, apparently according to Benson leung it's not USB-C compliant. I ordered one anyway, it could do damage to your car or phone by drawing too much current

Thanks for the heads-up! Upon looking into the matter more closely I discovered that the worst that may happen is the charger itself could eventually brown out but has over-current protection, over-charged, short-circuit, over-heat and over-voltage protection in it that will prevent damage to the 6p or vehicle. What Benson is describing is that 3A devices could try to pull 3A from a 2.4 rated charger, resulting in the charger eventually failing but due to all of the protective layers that means the charger and only the charger will be affected, not the device on the other end. Also keep in mind his testing was on a Chromebook Pixel and not the 6p which has been charging just fine so far.

In layman's terms, it will break itself before it harms my phone or car. Aside from that, I'll just keep using it until a Car adapter gets made that meets official specs. Nothing to worry about, if anything there's a chance that the Tronsmart might not be putting too little juice to the phone rather than too much ;) But from my anecdotal experience it has been charging my 6p far quicker than my older USB A car chargers did for my older USB A phone.

Cool that's good to know. I ordered one, and was going to return it, but I'll keep it. He is reviewing a anker car charger, hopefully that's compliant. I think it'll probably be another couple of months before we see more chargers. I just want a 3.0 amp car charger, and I'll be good.

Re: USB-C car chargers?

According to all of Benson Leung's info, the "charging rapidly" has more to do with construction of the cable than it does the output of the charger itself. Plug your phone into a 1.5A charger with a non-compliant cable and it'll report "charging rapidly" and may actually draw 3A from the charger (or try anyway).

I'm in no hurry for a car charger, I'll wait for a USB-C compliant charger, or just use one of my iOrange-E cables with the one I have.

Re: USB-C car chargers?

So I tried and tronsmart car charger and it worked for about 5 minutes after which it stopped charging. I think I'll wait it out for an "official" charger from Google, though the Anker 4-port does look promising. It's not a rapid charge but it's from a reputable company

It probably browned out. The phone is asking for 3.0 amps, and the charger can only give 2.4 amps, so it just stops working. I've been watching his Google doc with cables etc, and so far there are only 2 car chargers, but both only charge at 2.4 amps. I'm waiting on a 3.0 amp car charger, then I'll buy one.

See this thread: http://forums.androidcentral.com/nexus-6p/609896-beware-many-bad-usb-c-cables-out-there.html

There are a lot of non-compliant USB-C cables out there that should not be used with legacy chargers as they can damage the cable and/or charger.

Re: USB-C car chargers?

Cancelled my Tronspot order. Standing by to hear about a spec-compliant car charger...

So if I have the aukey 2.4a charger from the spreadsheet, and I'm using an A to C 2.0 cable from the spreadsheet as well, how much power should I be pulling when checking with Ampere?

I had the Aukey 2.4a car charger and the A to C cable that came with the phone. Worked great for the first charge, after that the charger no longer worked.

So is everyones Tronsmart charger breaking since the list said its not approved?

Whats the worst that can happen if I use my 6P with that charger? I'm asking because my Tronsmart arrived. If it's the charger that'll break eventually and not the phone, then I really don't mind. Haha.

Here you go

For what it's worth I've been using the same $15 "non-compliant" charger since 2011 on all my previous phones (and other vehicles) until now with no issues for the same reason: It had built in protection that would cause the charger itself to fail before it does anything to my car or phone. The only reason I'm not still using it is because it's not USB-C but there's still nothing wrong with it after 4 years. If someone makes a car charger that makes Leung happy then I'll get it, but I'm not sweating it if they don't.

Re: USB-C car chargers?

As the all powerful and all knowing wise OP of this sticky I'm happy to inform you that the Tronsmart car charger does indeed charge the phone quite fast. I don't know whether the "charging rapidly" indicator on the screen is actually accurate or not because there seems to be some disagreement whether it's actually true but from my experience today it did.

Mind you I drive a RAM Hemi pickup, which is clearly the best road beast ever created so perhaps that was why.

PS: suck it F-150 furd owners, my truck owns your lame 5.0L :)

Ah the ol Dodge Ram, designed for small men that don't actually use their "work" truck for work!! You wisely left us F250 owners off the list (the F150 is a ripoff) ;-)
