Android Central Question

I'm thinking of buying a Google Pixel 2 XL, but want to know how prevalent the burn-in issue still is. I would have expected a company of Google's supposed calibre to not have this at all, let alone fix it by now, but I've seen a couple reports of issues still happening.

I think issues like this can happen to any device and/or manufacturer. Not making excuses for Google - just saying that it's likely a case by case problem.

It really wasn't burn in.. it was image retention, which is both temporary and inherent to the technology.

The tweak to the nav bar reduced the speed at which the image would begin to persist.

Can't see it on my P2 however I went into my local EE store to see the display P2 and P2XL and both have huge burn in from software they run while displaying. There's a massive 'G' logo burned in right in the middle of the display and it's easy to notice as well.

The display panel on the XL was also very red in hue, I checked to see if night mode was on but it wasn't. Was so odd to see

Display units are abused... They typically run at full brightness sometimes 24 hours a day, running a simple demo over and over. A phone on display for a month or so could have been subject to more use (abuse) than you'll put on it over a full year.

Anything released in the fall that's been out there this long has probably logged more screen on time than anyone could possibility see using it normally.

And your are correct... A worn out AMOLED display will be red and muddy as the blue LED sites degrade much quicker than the red ones.

our demo units that were AMOLED had bad burn in fairly quickly but they are on full brightness with a static picture for the whole day and would also be red as mentioned above. not common in real use unless you are on full brightness and it's 4 yrs old

Had my XL since November, have no issues/signs of burn-in ( actually haven't experienced any issues with the screen ).. so far best phone I have owned !

Absolutely. People will run the same demo screens and load up the same stuff (text message samples, Google navigation bar, etc) multiple, maybe even dozens of times, per day per unit. That's why I don't often use display models as accurate representations of screen quality - or if there's burn-in, I merely attribute it to "screen abuse," as you've mentioned.

Some customers even manage to crack the screens and damage the hardware of the phones while they're at it... Sad, honestly.
