Google Pixel 6/Pro - just over the horizon?

Ooh I haven’t used that in forever. I can’t remember what I used it for now. What specific use cases do you use that feature?
Everything! I copy files like Excel, Word, jpg, movies, and app generated files in case phone crashes or is stolen.

I sometimes copy files like PowerPoint presentations from my phone to a work computer through USB. Did you know embedded videos in PowerPoint can now be displayed on phone or projected to Smart Board with no computer involved?

I consider my phone a pc.

Wow I love how you’re using your phone for productivity and things like that. I can’t wait to dive back into it. There’s not much you can easily do on an iPhone and if there is anything you can do on it, it usually requires work arounds to make it work. Surprisingly Microsoft doesn’t even support much phone to computer interaction like on Android. Connecting my old Android phone to the PC and using Google messages, I could read and reply to texts on my laptop without using the phone as long as the session didn’t time out. I really loved that feature for Android.

So I'm a little bummed that I hear the 50 megapixel camera will be Samsung and not Sony. I had always held out hope that El Googs would finally partner with Sony for a phone. This is me being sad.

Oh man, where did you hear that? Also if it’s the same 50mp sensor used in the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra then it’s all good.

I wouldn't be bummed yet , pixel team can work their magic

Just bummed Stang because it's not Sony. I wanted Google to break free from Samsung. Pipe dream I know.
Im not upset they collaborate with a well known Android manufacturer , Samsung together with the chip.and camera youll see its going be great .

For me, it's a great way to bring a library of movies, music, etc. with me when traveling.

I can definitely see the potential for using one with the Pixel 6 / 6 Pro when doing extensive video recording, though - if you're recording a lot of 4k, that can eat through available storage very quickly. I don't know if it's accurate, but I've heard an hour of such recording can use upwards of 20-30GB! Of course, there'll reportedly be the option to upgrade to 256GB or maybe even 512GB which could make any expandability a truly rare need, if you don't mind the increased cost for that upgraded level. You can back it up to the cloud, of course, but a USB drive would be less network- (and therefore battery-) intensive, and provide flexibility if you're doing a lot of video in an area where you don't have good network coverage (e.g. camping).

How do we know it’s a Samsung sensor?

We won't know for sure till either Google directly cites it or there's a teardown of an actual unit, but there's been a number of media outlets reporting that code in Google's latest version of the camera software on the Android 12 Beta makes specific reference to this sensor.

Compared to the Sony sensor, the Samsung uses larger pixels which should make it stronger for light capture, though it is also therefore a larger overall sensor, which helps explain the size of the camera bump.

I am skipping the Flip 3 and Fold 3 this year and waiting for the Pixel 6 Pro. I can't wait....is it October yet?

Yeah I was kinda interested in a foldable, but the fold 3 is so thick, and honestly I would never actually use the full screen that much. And the flip seems like a lot of folding/unfolding for the same size screen I already carry around easily now. I know the flip would probably give out from all the opening and closing long before my pixel...... so not really seeing a reason at the moment to try a foldable, even though I was pretty keen on it a while back.

From a review I saw on the new foldable using both screens is a major battery drainer. If I didn't like the Pixel so much and had the money I would go for the Flip. Something so satisfying about snapping the phone closed. Pity the camera isn't up to snuff.

Yeah, same here. The Flip’s camera specs are stuck on last year’s by necessity of keeping costs down and the price more inviting. But the camera improvements are the primary driving force behind my upgrades. I am often pleased by my s21 Ultra’s cameras, but I can definitely still see where software improvements are needed and they just haven’t managed them for some reason. Some ongoing problems with motion blur persist, for example. And sometimes focusing is a hair slow to happen, which is noticeable when you’re used to a bit quicker action from an iPhone.

I think Google can do more with Samsung sensors than Samsung has done.

It’s not just the camera I’m hopeful about. I’m eager to see how Google’s superior assistant and customizable experience work on a hardware system they more closely participated in developing.

Partnering up with Sony would have been an awesome idea!

I'm still mad Google gimped the regular pixel 6 without a telephoto. Even on the 2x digital zoom I see image quality issues.

Yeah I don’t agree with that decision as the S21 and iPhone Pro both feature a telephoto camera at a relatively compact size. I’m using the iPhone 11 Pro and I love the size and form factor. The only reason I’m going for the 6 Pro is because of the 4x periscope zoom.

I too enjoy telephoto lens. I'm hoping the camera will live up to the hype though. I'm trying to reserve judgment for now!

I'm at the point I will have to wait to hold the two 6's in hand to decide if the telephoto is worth the bulk of the pro.

I've really been enjoying the pixel 5 form factor and did not want to go much bigger. I do miss a zoom lens that is not only digital zoom. I like the ultrawide too.

Just another small way Google drops the ball where apple and Samsung don't.

Yeah that’s true. They always seem to find one way to do that.lol But maybe they can get the most out of the 50mp sensor for 2-3x zoom.
