Gorilla Glass 3 - Do we still need screen protecters?

OK Guys, the question is: Given that you have Gorilla 3, does it make the protector unnecessary? Preference aside, does Gorilla 3 scratch? I have never used a protector with my Iphone 4S and never scratched it, but if I had Gorilla 3, could I be a little more careless and get away with it?

Copied from Corning's web site:

TOUGHER SCIENCE. TOUGHER PERFORMANCE.

Corning? Gorilla? Glass 3 with NATIVE DAMAGE RESISTANCE?

It?s a whole new Gorilla. Tougher from the inside out with Corning?s exclusive, game-changing Native Damage Resistance, Gorilla Glass 3 offers improved scratch resistance, reduced scratch visibility, and improved retained strength. Look for new Gorilla Glass 3 coming soon on the world?s coolest smartphones, tablets and laptops.

Doesn't sound like there's no need for a screen protector. "Improved scratch resistance, reduced scratch visibility ... etc." I'm getting a screen protector. I've had good luck on my Droid Charge with Steinheil Ultra Crystal Clear protectors.

Its the users opinion. If they want an screen protector, then they would get a protector.
Overall, in my opinion we still need protectors. Gorilla Glass 3 is strong, and a improvement upon Gorilla Glass 2, but dosent mean its immune to everything.

Has anyone tried Ghost Armor? I've seen the kiosk in the mall and I thought I might try it when I get my 4.

First post.
Thought this an interesting conversation.

Given my line of work a screen protector is a must!
Using a 4S right now (gag)
But will soon be a Note 2 user.
My plan is to use a tempered glass screen protector and Seidio Convert case.
Too much can happen too fast that might hurt my phone.
And I'm far too broke to just replace it, even with insurance.

If you're looking for a straightforward answer and no beating around the bush, I wouldn't worry about a screen protector if I were you. If you've never found yourself scratching the 4S screen which has Gorilla Glass 1 then chances are you aren't going to have a scratch on Gorilla Glass 3 which is 3x more scratch resistant and hides scratches 40% better than Gorilla Glass 2, as long as you take about the same amount of care as you did for the iPhone.

Screen protectors are a benefit against the oh-crap moments and its cheaper than replacing the screen itself. GG3 is great but not indestructible.

If you take care of your phone the only oh-crap moment that could happen is if the phone falls on its face and cracks the screen, in which not even a screen protector will save it.

My Note 2 is naked other than for a flip cover that I periodically replace with the original back cover and it's in pristine condition. The best kind of protection doesn't involve a case or screen protector, it mostly comes from taking care of things. Unless it's like an iPhone and its paint job just chips and peels.

The thing is, Gorilla Glass is softer than sand (quartz) which is pretty much everywhere (in your pockets) therefor it will scratch the screen. If you really want something that won't scratch go with a Sapphire screen... but one problem, only one phone currently uses that (well two if you counter the iphone 5's camera lens). In the coming months though you should see sapphire screen protectors for sale that will protect the screen from everything but diamond. For the time being I'd go with your favorite screen protector to keep it scratch free.

Another oh crap moment is when u get dust or dirt on the screen and there happened to be traces of glass or silica in it and you swipe ur finger over it unlock it and bam, u have a scratch in your screen. Its tempered glass which is softer than glass or silica which is found in dust and dirt.

I've used the zagg invisible shield on my last few phones and have been very happy with it. I tried installing it and even with the shower method I've gotten dust particles. For the last two, I've paid the $8 for the best buy employees to install it though. If it bubbles then you can return it within 15 days and have them do it again for free. Then there is also a two year warranty on it which I've used once and they sent me all new ones. The new one I have for the S4 also seems to have a nice anti-glare property to it and then there is the extra piece of mind.

I also use the invisible shields but I recently went with the armor shields. Basically same thing but cheaper and lifetime warranty.

I don't keep my Super Phones for more than 6 month, I will put a screen protector and a slim case.

I love my One & S4 but this fall it will upgrade to my 21st Super Phone (in 43 months).

As for the toilet paper - obviously you have never had children or a cat that likes to unroll it by spinning it! That's why the toilet paper should be behind - they have a harder time unrolling it that way!

Good point, and on the bicycle comment about the kick stand. Class bicycles don't come with kick stands.

Screen protector and case going on the in the first 5 minutes of getting my S4.

A screen protector is cheap insurance and cheaper than getting the glass replaced. Do you need it? That depends on the individual, but if you do scratch the glass it will drive you nuts.

Before you go screen protectorless, it is best to reserve the same one pocket everytime, no coins or keys in that pocket. Point glass towards leg. Once this habit is 100%, then it is safe to go without a protector for the screen. I use a really good case: silicon/plastic with good lip standoffs so you can set it face down, on a flat surface. If you use an ultrathin case or no case i would use a screen protector then. Since Gorilla glass 3 is so much stronger, it should survive. I will find out for sure in a couple of years. Enjoy the new GG3.:)
