GPS icon will not go away

Alright, here is what you can do, go to the PlayStore and install All-In-One Toolbox, after that install the Permission Check Plugin which also available on the PlayStore.

Once done, open All-In-One Toolbox, tap on ToolBox, go to Plugins and open Permission Check Plugin, finally tap on LOCATION APPS.

Now you should see a list of all the installed apps that has access to use GPS.

Once you have that list, you can go to M8's Settings, open Apps, tap on the first app of the list above, and Disable it, do the same for the other apps on the list.

Once the GPS icon is gone it means you have found the app causing the problem, uninstall it to solve the issue, and Enable the other apps that you have disabled in the process.

If you know what you are doing, this whole process shouldn't take more than 15 minutes.

Thanks for tip. Walked through quickly, disabled four apps that fell into this category even with my Location turned off in settings. Still got the icon after disabling all four. Even after a reboot which shouldn't have mattered.

I even did hard reset, reinstalled everything. Didn't see this icon for almost 24 hours now it is back.

My thoughts, this icon doesn't stick, it comes up when I turn off the radio, turn on the radio. Goes away then, turns on now and then but doesn't stick like what others are seeing. It isn't a big deal because in settings the GPS usage is minimal when it does this but it still irkes me that some rogue app or process is doing this. I am stock, only 3rd party apps are some Humble Bundle stuff. Try to live a clean Andoid life and it still has problems.

Cool program though. Thanks for the tip again.

You know, having the ability to modify apps permission is the only reason that might make me want to root my M8

My phone seems to be doing better. Not as much GPS icons through the day, nor does it stay on constantly. I think the new HTC service packed patched the error. The service packed said it was bug fixes.

That is exactly how mine is behaving. I thought it was an HTC thing too. I never got the sticking problem but then I never leave Location turned on. I think this must be software related not hardware so I won't even bother getting a replacement. Some odd mix of software, radio software maybe, and my location here in Michigan. Towers, frequency, who knows.

Like I mentioned earlier it appeared resolve as of late last night after a complete rebuild. It Just came back this afternoon out of the blue. Like a background patch got applied since I did a hard reset. I can see that happening if it isn't a firmware update. Maybe? Out of ideas other than popping the sim back in my iPhone so I can stop being obsessive about this.

I thought my rooting days were over as well.

Quick update, again. I decided to uninstall the HTC service pack. Well, now I can see what caused the sticking GPS issue others were experiencing. Reinstalled it and the icon eventually went away but it still took some time and now back to the occasional ups. I think the service pack is downloading or doing something behind the scenes even though I don't see any data exchanged for it in Data Manager. This is the culprit, it might be okay for others but not for everyone. This service pack is still buggy.

Is this the second of 2 service pack updates that were just released? Yesterday's update came pretty quickly right after the update earlier in the week. I haven't installed either due to the overwhelming bad reviews.

Guys I just thought of something, have any of you enabled device tracking for in case the device is lost? As something like that could keep GPS running all the time.

I still have the issues even after trying everything stated here and more. Htc says it's the phone and so does Att. So, does that mean it's everyone's phones? I doubt that. I do agree it started with the first htc service pack of last week I believe it was. Nothing can get rid of it. Has anyone called htc on this? I plan to call back and ask about the service pack updates if I find time. Hope someone has a fix.

I guess everyone fixed it or just forgot about it? Anyone have any ideas or if there is a fix? Thanks for the response!

I believe now this is completely tied to the HTC service pack updates and no hardware swaps will correct it. HTC needs to correct it on their end via software.

In my case the icon came and went when I first powered on and powered off the gsm radio, and occasionally throughout the day for like a second or two.

Today I was in an area with very poor or no reception and the icon stayed on and GPS was active during this to time. It looks like HTC is using GPS to lock the radio in when the signal is weak compared to the past prior to the recent service pack updates. That might explain why it comes and goes during the day because my house is in an area where reception ebbs and flows. And this might explain why some see this pop up more so than others.

Thanks for the response. Mine doesn't come on now as much as it was, but, is still doing so. I guess I'll skip an exchange then bc other than this issue, there isn't anything wrong with the phone. Hopefully they fix it soon.

I am still having this issue as well. I also think its the service pack causing the issues.

HTC has no reports of it other than mine they say and I cannot get any emails back from the developer. At&t said it possibly is the e911 services? And they are going to send a warranty exchange if I want one. I have no idea what it is. The notification did come on while receiving an amber alert today, but, not sure. I installed the HTC service pack on my old phone and have not saw the notification at all. It's definitely annoying and kills battery life.

I sent my phone in for repair. I was told by my carrier and htc that it was a "brokes" phone that either needs repaired or exchanged. Since nobody can really explain it, it seemed like a better idea. One rep said it was carrier iq tracking, and, that phone did have it. Hope everyone gets theirs fixed! Thanks for the responses.

Anyone having the same issues or having better experience after the official 4.4.4 update?

I was hopeful, but the GPS icon is still very much there. I checked my battery status and after 6 hours of battery time, my GPS ran for almost 2 of those hours which is ridiculous as I've been at my desk at work and haven't moved since 830am. I also have my GPS set to battery saving using wifi and cell towers, not the GPS on the phone. I have a feeling that getting the M9 will be very close in my future.

Would you please provide your Software no. and HTC service pack version,
If you uninstalled the HTC service pack, will the GPS icon be gone?

I will try to uninstall the service pack and see if that helps.
