Has anyone else shattered their s6 edge screen yet? So sad . . .

So I was at my sister's house the other day, and my 12 y.o. niece asked if anyone had a flashlight (she had dropped a small piece of one of her toys under the table.) I switched on the flashlight app on my s6 edge and handed it to her, being the good uncle that I am. Soon enough I heard her say "I found it!" and she went to give me my phone back. It slipped out of her hand, and that probably would have been fine, but she tried to snap-catch it before it hit the floor and ended up slinging it directly into the brick mantle next to us. Everyone kind of gasped.

My little niece cringed and said sorry, then picked it up and handed it to me. I took a quick glance and thought "what a tough phone this is" before I noticed that the screen had in fact shattered. Tiny spiderweb cracks all over the screen. It still works fine and I don't even notice the cracks when the screen is on. But I need to get it fixed.

This is my 4th? smartphone and the first one I've had with a cracked screen. I didn't buy any kind of insurance when I got it. What are the options? Any idea on what it will cost? Some of the local cell repair places list prices for repairing certain phones, but none seem to have the s6 series on their list yet.

Any advice? :'(

I'm not trying to be a **** so don't get offended by this, it's just my first reaction. Ahem. You're stupid for not getting insurance on an expensive phone.

Aside from that, there isnt much you can do. I wouldn't even risk buying a screen to replace it yourself since creating the screen is expensive to begin with. You could try selling it for a loss on craigslist and using the cash towards a new one, this time with insurance.

I know, you are completely accurate. Every other phone I've had was insured. What's weird is when I bought the s6 (through the T-Mobile website) I don't remember being offered insurance. Right after it was broken I immediately thought "no problem, I got the insurance" but when I checked my account it wasn't there. I thought back to the time of purchase and realized that NO, I hadn't bought the insurance. I looked up the relevant details on the site and found that it would have cost $8 a month. I've had the phone since 4/1 so I could have paid $8 to escape the situation I'm in now. I wanted the s6 so much that I just rushed through the buying process and didn't even think about it. I'm usually not this dumb.

How about getting the insurance now, waiting a few weeks then doing the claim. ;)

Ya can't. You have to do it at purchase. You can always cancel insurance, but you can't add it later.

"I'm not trying to be a **** so don't get offended by this, it's just my first reaction. Ahem. You're stupid for not getting insurance on an expensive phone." You're funny :)

Anyway, dude I'm so sorry. I vote for "sell it for a loss and get a new one". I don't see any other choice. Repair shops are really great at fixing iphones, but they couldn't fix my old S5 properly, and that didn't even have a curved screen. Cut your losses and never make the same mistake again.

Some more free advice: Next time someone needs a flashlight, hold the phone yourself. And don't leave it on a counter where a cat can knock it off. And don't leave it on a patio chair where a child can run into it with a bike. Ask me how I know this! lol. Yes I finally wized up and got insurance on my Edge when I bought it, I'm extremely choosy about where I put it down, and I try not to hand it to people. I'm trying to always remind myself: "This is a $900 computer. Do I really want to put it there/hand it to that person?" Remember, while it's certainly better to have insurance and be able to get it replaced, the replacement won't be a brand new phone, but will be a refurbished one that might have god-only-knows-what wrong with it.

What about the Samasung protection plan? I believe you have 30 days from date of purchase to add this. See attached screen shot from Samsung site..

I don't know about T mobile, but with Verizon you have 30 days from purchase to put the Asurion insurance on it. I'm pretty sure T mobile also uses Asurion.

most places offer ins within 30 days... This is why I mentioned above.

AT&T and Squaretrade also offers insurance within 30 days. For Squaretrade you just need proof of purchase. I insured my International Note 4 the same way and my wife's edge through AT&T a few days later.

T-Mobile has a 14 day window.

Yes. You can still get insurance within 30 days with carriers. Also square trade offers insurance within 30 days. Just call your carried to add it or do square trade online.

Not all carriers have a 30 day policy like people are saying.
T-Mobile FAQ:
What if I change my mind and don’t want JUMP! anymore?
You can remove the JUMP! feature any time, but you can only add it within 14 days of a new device purchase financed on EIP.

Seems to be many people advocating fraud.

Yeah, I just checked Square Trade's terms and it definitely does not cover pre-existing conditions. Your best non-fraud option is to sell it for parts on the Bay because I don't think there are repair services for the Edge yet. If you can find one, it might make sense to repair it and sell it to fund a new one WITH insurance.

Having said that, you would likely get away with the fraud. Not saying you should...just that you could.

Stop with the complaining about fraud already. If companies like square trade were concerned about it they would require proof of the condition before insurance something. Believe me they are not worried because they still make a profit off of you regardless if you make a claim or not. Get over yourself people.

Thanks for all of the suggestions.

I got my phone on 4/1 and at the time of breakage it was well out of the 14 day window to get the T-mobile plan and just barely out of the 30-day window on squaretrade.

My plan now is to just keep using it as is. Before long there will likely be a repair option for these things, or I may make the attempt to do it myself. I've repaired iphones before for my wife, the edge couldn't be that much more difficult, right? ;)

If you ad carrier insurance after you have the device, you have to take it to that carrier so they can make sure it is functional. Why would you honestly think that insurance fraud is ok!? This is EXACTLY the reason as to WHY the rest of our premiums and deductibles keep going up!!

Just admit the mistake, and purchase a new phone at retail cost...then put insurance on the new phone.
