How do you find what type of network you are using (2g, 4G) when you are in roaming mode?

Every once in a while while i travel, i end up roaming, and have no real idea what TYPE of network i am on, a 2 g or 3/4g network, let alone being able to choose one, I have the nexus 4, and am a little dissapointed in the lack of control one has when wanting to CHOOSE the type of network i want to use at any given time. In the Rural environments, i have found that it becomes essential to choose 2g only due to the network operators 3g rf settings wanting to prefer the 3/4g hspa, umts network types but not being able to establish a call or perform basic data on those fringe type areas. It will only indicate Roaming, no H, no E etc....any thoughts on this, any apps that will allow me to pick and choose?

To find out the type of network, I think you can go to Settings/Wireless/Mobile networks/Network type and strength (that's how it is on my Razr Maxx).

There are a number of 2G/3G toggles on Google Play. Here's one: 2G-3G OnOff

That Network Signal Info app looks unbelievably handy for troubleshooting, thanks for the link!
