[HOW-TO] Download/Install Honeycomb to Nook Color (SD card)

Android Market install problems

I was able to install the honeycomb with no problems, thanks! I'm having trouble with the android market install. I have the two files downloaded but can't seem to grasp the remaining instructions. Where exactly to put the dowloaded files and how to get to the command prompt in the folder to run the commands. I might need a little more detail on those instructions. A little new at this, but thanks for everything thus far.

screen not working

I did this yesteerday and it worked great. Now today when I try to load honeycomb on my nook color with the sd card it doesn't work. Its like the screen is broken, the nook turns on, but the screen only flashes once in awhile. I know the screen really works fine though, cause I'm typing this now on thhe B&N operating system. So, does anyone know what Happened?

Using WinImage with Windows 7

Will definitely be trying this when I get home... the only thing that bugs me is, for some reason WINImage doesn't work for me... that's why I"ve been using the other program. When I go to select the drive I want, and "restore virtual image" it doesn't find any of my drives or anything. That's why I've been using the other program. Any suggestions?

If you're using Windows 7 and you're not seeing the disks in WinImage, make certain that you're running as administrator (i.e. right click and select "Run as administrator"). Your disks will then appear as expected.

I suck. I failed to read the whole forum, and the answer was contained therein. Therefore I am removing my stupid post.

other key apps

So I've found sources for most of the google apps, which seem to work. But no one seems to mention Calendar, and google calendar isn't in the marketplace. Does anyone have a source for this? I was daring and tried using the files from my nexus one (CalendarGoogle.apk, odex, GoogleCalenderSyncAdapter.apk, odex, CalendarProvider.apk/odex). These don't work, just won't open.

I checked logcat and this seemed the reasonable culprit:
D/dalvikvm( 918): DexOpt: VM build version mismatch (23 vs 24)

I'm guessing the obex files are vm dependent, and that the vm versioning changed between 2.3.3 on my nexus and 3.0 from the sdk.

Any one get this working?

I'm also dying to use the newer gmail.

Has there been any breakthrough on the decrypting password issue? If not, then since this seems to be a card by card issue, can people share which cards are working (manufacture, size, class)?

me too me too same problem :)

carphoria made this post earlier. The link included the drivers and that made a big difference for me. It's worth a try.

"OK, now that I begged for help, then turned around and said "it all works" here are two links for everyone. Pretty simple stuff once you get HC on your NC, use this to get ADB installed and working...

[DRIVER PACK] Easy USB ADB Installer for Windows (32/64 bit) - xda-developers

Then this to install not only the market, but other standards such as google talk, etc

[SCRIPT] Honeycomb Install - Market, GMail, Talk, Contacts, Maps - xda-developers

I hope this helps someone... I'm loving this "dirt cheap" honeycomb tablet."

Search for "easy install market" and find the carphoria post for the links.

I have installed honeycomb on sd card (16gb) in dual boot with CM7 (installed on emmc). Now HC can't mount any sdcard so I can't open /sdcard directory from file manager and for example I can't download any file from browser and when I open gallery or music apps they said that I don't have any sdcard insert.. any idea?

Yes, it runs thru with the android words and then stops asking for a password. I put in one of my regular pw, isn't right. I re flashed the card, same thing.

I've had the same experience. I bought a Patriot Class 10 16GB microSDHC card. I even did a secure-format to completely wipe the card before writing the image to it. It boots fine, but then requests a password.

Peace All,

Im stuck...I rooted my NOOK using Auto-Nooter 3.0.0 (for 1.1 only). Everything booted up fine---I have an "official' Android tablet....then I saw this in the forums and decided that i wanted to upgrade to Honeycomb. So i followed the instructions (which were similar to those of Auto-nooter 3.0.0) using the same SD card. Well it booted---but it booted into Auto-Nooter and not Honeycomb---any help? Do I need to delete Auto-Nooter from my SD card and re-burn HC image onto it again---or is there something Im missing?

any help would be greatly appreciated

Update to my experiences.

I tried to load nookhoney04.img to a Wintec 16gb class 10 card 2 times using winimage. Both times the image worked good, and booted. However, I got the password screen.

I discovered that when I tried to format the card using windows, it would only see/format the 115mb of free space on the card. However, formatting the card on the nook color first, restored the card to 16gb(14.9gb free).

I decided to try imaging the card using mac just for grins. Low and behold, i did not get tripped up by the password screen. But, I was not able to get the wifi to work. While I was checking the treads for the wifi issue, the NC went to sleep. When I woke it up, it rebooted and stopped at the password screen. I tried to remove the card and try again. Same result. I even tried the copy/delete/copy the uimage file. That did not work either.

I did see on the thread where someone mentioned formatting the disk using the nook then imaging the card. I think that is why I was able to get past the password. I guess the trick only works the first time though.

So, I guess I am back to asking, what cards do work for those of you who do not get the password screen? Manufacture, size, class please. Thanks

I got the honeycomb04.img flashed to my sd card, and am booted into Honeycomb, but I can't get adb to work. It works with my Evo just fine, and I can do 'adb shell' and execute commands. But when I switch to the nook color, nothing. Command 'adb devices' returns nothing. I tried rebooting, turning off "USB Debugging", and turning it back on.

BTW, using Mac OS X Snow Leopard.

How I got Honeycomb installed successfully

Been reading through this thread all day and finally have things "stable" on my NC. I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, but the links I provided have 32-bit software as well.

Here is my current, working Honeycomb setup, and all the different places I went and things I did to make it work:

1) Bought a Kingston (Class 4) 16GB MicroSD card. Previously tried 16GB Patriot (Class 10) MicroSD and was getting encryption error.

2) Downloaded the image from the inital post of this thread. Also downloaded the 64-bit version of WinRAR (link also has 32-bit version); also downloaded the 64-bit version of WinImage (link also has 32-bit version).

3) Installed WinRAR and WinImage. Inserted 16GB MicroSD card into computer (using a MiscroSD-to-SD converter and the card reader built into my computer).

4) Opened the image from the first post with WinRAR and extracted it to my desktop. Opened WinImage and followed the directions from the first post (Once the program is opened, under 'Disk' choose "Restore Virtual Image to Physical Drive." Change the "Files shown" at the bottom to "All files" and select the image file). This process formats the card, so you should not have to manually format it.

5) Took ~7 minutes for it to install fully onto the card. Held down the power button for what seems like forever--but is actually 10 seconds--to completely power-down my NookColor. Inserted card into the NC's MicroSD slot, powered it back on, and Honeycomb booted! Ran quite slowly the first few times, but after a couple reboots it runs pretty darn well.

How I got Android Marketplace installed, but not quite working

So now that I have the OS working, I've been trying to get the Android Marketplace working. Here's how I got the Marketplace onto my already-Honeycombed NookColor:

1) Installed this driver pack from xdadevelopers. Downloaded the "Combo Pack (all-in-one!)" option and did the default install, which puts the necessary ADB stuff into your "C:" directory. Follow the instructions in the first post of that thread to get your NookColor properly recognized by the ADB (stands for Android Debug Bridge).

2) To make sure the install went smoothly and the computer actually "recognizes" the NookColor, I opened command prompt as an administrator (go to the Start menu and, in the search bar, type "cmd" but don't hit your Enter key; only one result should appear, "cmd.exe"; right-click it and choose "Run as administrator"). Then I navigated to the correct folder using the following command:

cd C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools

Then I ran the following command:

adb devices

After ~10 seconds, my Nook appeared, albeit in a serial-number-only form. Still, as long as some numbers appear, you know the ADB is detecting your NookColor. If it doesn't appear to detect it, check out the short troubleshooting area of the first post of the xdadevelopers thread I linked above. Don't close this command prompt window yet!

3) Downloaded the version of Market suggested in the first post of this thread, as well as the GoogleServicesFramework.apk file. After they finished downloading, I moved them into the "platform-tools" folder that was created in step 1 (it should be located in your C: drive, then in the "android-sdk-windows" folder).

4) Still using the command prompt window from step 2, I copy/pasted each of the commands from the first post of this thread (#4 under "Installing the Android Market on the Nook Color running Honeycomb"). No errors were encountered, so I unplugged the NookColor from my computer, shut it down and booted it back up into Honeycomb, and went to the Apps section. The Marketplace should be there.

Now, this is where I've run into trouble. I can open the Marketplace all the way to the point where it wants me to log into my account. However, after attempting to login for a few minutes, it has consistently given me the following error:

"Can't establish a reliable data connection to the server."

However, I can connect to the web and even to my e-mail using the built-in E-mail app just fine. So far, nobody on the web who has asked this question has received an answer, and I have tried just about everything to get it to connect.

If anyone knows how to get past the "Can't establish a reliable connection to the server" error, I would love to hear how!

HC is taking all the space of your SD card, you would have to partition your SD card in two, to be able to used your SD card normally. There are several aplications that can partion your SD card. You can get dropbox to transfer music or pictures. this is the link for dropbox http://db.tt/JLFBYLZ

A lot of people report problems with the Patriot 16GB class 10, asking for password. If you get a Patriot 8GB class 10, it won't ask you for the password.
I don't think the devs are going to be solve the problem, because they are waiting for the HC source code to be release.
