[HOW-TO] Download/Install Honeycomb to Nook Color (SD card)

Peace All,

Im stuck...I rooted my NOOK using Auto-Nooter 3.0.0 (for 1.1 only). Everything booted up fine---I have an "official' Android tablet....then I saw this in the forums and decided that i wanted to upgrade to Honeycomb. So i followed the instructions (which were similar to those of Auto-nooter 3.0.0) using the same SD card. Well it booted---but it booted into Auto-Nooter and not Honeycomb---any help? Do I need to delete Auto-Nooter from my SD card and re-burn HC image onto it again---or is there something Im missing?

any help would be greatly appreciated

Thats weird once you burn HC in the sd card it should have formated the SD Card.

I would recomend these Steps:
1. Turn on your Nook Color, wait until it loads
2. Once it loads insert the SD Card
3. Go to options, and unmount the SD Card
4. Format your SD Card
5. Remove your SD Card
6. follow the steps for the Honeycomb

I used a class 4 Sandisk 8gb I bought from Staples for $20.00. For most of what I do it is fine. There have been times when a class 6 might have worked better (like games) but I'm not sure about that and nobody sold anything faster than class 4 in town. I will probably by a class 6 eventually and try it out.

So now that I have the OS working, I've been trying to get the Android Marketplace working. Here's how I got the Marketplace onto my already-Honeycombed NookColor:

1) Installed this driver pack from xdadevelopers. Downloaded the "Combo Pack (all-in-one!)" option and did the default install, which puts the necessary ADB stuff into your "C:" directory. Follow the instructions in the first post of that thread to get your NookColor properly recognized by the ADB (stands for Android Debug Bridge).

2) To make sure the install went smoothly and the computer actually "recognizes" the NookColor, I opened command prompt as an administrator (go to the Start menu and, in the search bar, type "cmd" but don't hit your Enter key; only one result should appear, "cmd.exe"; right-click it and choose "Run as administrator"). Then I navigated to the correct folder using the following command:

cd C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools

Then I ran the following command:

adb devices

After ~10 seconds, my Nook appeared, albeit in a serial-number-only form. Still, as long as some numbers appear, you know the ADB is detecting your NookColor. If it doesn't appear to detect it, check out the short troubleshooting area of the first post of the xdadevelopers thread I linked above. Don't close this command prompt window yet!

3) Downloaded the version of Market suggested in the first post of this thread, as well as the GoogleServicesFramework.apk file. After they finished downloading, I moved them into the "platform-tools" folder that was created in step 1 (it should be located in your C: drive, then in the "android-sdk-windows" folder).

4) Still using the command prompt window from step 2, I copy/pasted each of the commands from the first post of this thread (#4 under "Installing the Android Market on the Nook Color running Honeycomb"). No errors were encountered, so I unplugged the NookColor from my computer, shut it down and booted it back up into Honeycomb, and went to the Apps section. The Marketplace should be there.

Now, this is where I've run into trouble. I can open the Marketplace all the way to the point where it wants me to log into my account. However, after attempting to login for a few minutes, it has consistently given me the following error:

"Can't establish a reliable data connection to the server."

However, I can connect to the web and even to my e-mail using the built-in E-mail app just fine. So far, nobody on the web who has asked this question has received an answer, and I have tried just about everything to get it to connect.

If anyone knows how to get past the "Can't establish a reliable connection to the server" error, I would love to hear how!
I had that message once or twice but I was able to back out and restart the market without issues. Sorry, this probably doesn't help much.

EASEUS question

Okay, I am trying to resize my sdcard folder to take advantage of the unallocated space on my microSD card. My Nook Honeycomb tells me I have about 1.2 gigs of space, while I have over 5 gigs unused. I have easeus installed, and I can see all the partitions using my card in a usb adaptor. But when I select the sdcard partition, the resize option is grayed out.

Have I missed a step?

Thanks for your help.

I solved the issue. I found that if I click on "reload disk info" in Easeus, then I can resize the sdcard partition. If anyone else encounters my problem, you'll have at least one possible solution!

My problem is not resizing the partition, I've used Easeus for that and it seems to work just fine. I see it in the W7 disk manager...no issues there. My issue is now using that free 13+ GB. Windows doesn't recognize more than one primary partition...it only mounts the small boot partition. So how are you guys accessing this space? I'm burning to get all my music, movies etc. moved over.

I'm having trouble extracting nookhoney04.img.zip
after downloading (3012KB), i run WINRAR but it get the following error

! C:\Documents and Settings\araghava.ST-USERS\My Documents\Downloads\nookhoney04.img(2).zip: The archive is either in unknown format or damaged

i've tried downloading using both chrome and firefox. anyone know what's the problem

Peace Calma,

Just tried your method---at first i thought i had bricked my device b/c it wouldnt get pass the "NOOK" symbol for like 8 hrs today. Unfortunately when I got home and tried your method the device did finally boot and installed something from my SD card--but when it was finished it booted right back into Auto Nooter 3.0.0---I dont know what im doing wrong---Ive burned the image twice on my SD card and still no HC :(

Peace All,

Do any of you think that if I put some kind of Recovery on my NOOK that I could just flash this from Recovery (or does Nook even work like that?)

I had that trouble and finally chose the add an account option. It came back and said this account already exists. Then I chose the login to existing account and it worked

using nook application on androided nook

I installed the nook application from the market. But then what? How can I load books not bought in the B&N store? I have a bunch of books that I put on my 'normal' nook via Adobe Digital Editions. I connected the nook - but ADE does not see a nook device. If I load the uSD card directly in my PC I only see the boot partition in explorer. In Easeus I can see and browse the other partitions but not transfer. I am missing a piece to the puzzle.

P.S. Using honeycomb

Appreciate any help!
Regards,
Rich

Question: The 16 gb card shows only 163 mb space left after installing honeycomb. Is this a problem and how to correct it? Thanks.

If you use a partition manager like Easeus, you will see that there is an unused area following the "sdcard" partition. You can then resize this partition to use all of this memory.

anyone actually tried this yet?

I just put froyo on my sdcard, and got it running on my nook. Is honeycomb complete enough to use, or should i stick with froyo for now?

A lot of people report problems with the Patriot 16GB class 10, asking for password. If you get a Patriot 8GB class 10, it won't ask you for the password.
I don't think the devs are going to be solve the problem, because they are waiting for the HC source code to be release.

There is a solution that involves reloading the uImage file on the sdcard. For HC you should only need to do this once.

There are new ways that have been developed: Nook Color Android Development - xda-developers

Apologies for all the XDA-dev links, they just happen to be the place where the innovation is happeneing (that I've been able to find).

And then comes the big question that several people are asking...how do you access this partition? I've tried everything under the sun (assigning a separate drive letter, playing with 'active' settings, primary vs. logic, etc) and can't seem to make anything work. Without the ability to mount this partition, how does one access it? Has anyone been able to actually do this? I've read both this and the Honeycomb threads word for word (several times) and haven't found any clues yet. Anyone? Anyone?

Thanks in advance...and to all the developers who have done such great work on all of this. I've been having tons of fun setting up my new nook froyo.

I'll tell you my experience, but I'll caveat it with the fact that I'm a dabbler (at best) in all of this. I'm sure there are ways that I could have improved my experience...but I don't know what they are. I tried the optimization techniques suggested but saw little improvement. While I think I did everything right...shrug.

I went ahead and started with honeycomb thinking that this would be the best since it's supposed to have been built specifically for tablet computing. I personally gave it up for froyo because it was really laggy and difficult to use, and I could find very few meaningful (read 'working') apps that are ready for honeycomb yet. (No good agenda apps/widgets, etc). Again, this may have been just me, I just didn't have time to take it further.

Froyo, on the other hand, started off lickety split and has been great so far. I figure now that the Xoom and other honeycomb devices are either out or on the way out its only a matter of time before honeycomb gets nailed down too. I'll be patient.

wait i should also state that when i removed the honeycomb sd card from the nook and boot back into stock rooted rom my mac will recognize the nook. but ADB will not recognize when searching connected devices in mac terminal. Thus making it freaking impossible to push market to my nook.
