[HOW-TO] Download/Install Honeycomb to Nook Color (SD card)

So, I got Honeycomb running and everything but I was wondering why my computer doesn't detect my nook when I plug in via USB. It would be nice to move files easily between the two without taking the micro sd out every time. Is there just some usb mode that I'm missing or is there no workaround right now?

Yes this helps, but the issue was it did not find the device. Like i mentioned before I had to uninstall the NC driver (with NC attached and in native OS), then install the drivers, and that worked.

I got the marketplace to work finally as well, but:

1) where are the apps being downloaded to? I cant find them.
2) why do they take forever to download? I have wireless N and no network/internet speed issues and currently NC only device attached to router
3) Do these need to be pushed onto NC via adb? if so, how is this done?

Thanks.

Most apps are in /system/app (some are not, but I don't know where they ended up ??) You can use 'adb install <filename>' to install an app from your computer.

Adding music & pics......

Ok, as long as it took me to get my NC set up I dont want to ANYTHING to screw it back up so,....... If I remove my SD card and stick it back in my computer to add Pics & Music, is there a special way to do that as to not affect any of the Honeycomb program? is there a special folder to place them in or what?

On a side note, every app that I install works great, nook, kindle, angry birds (both), pandora, quick office, etc.... every one EXCEPT any app or game that uses a "tilt" motion. HC on my NC is smooth and fast. I love it. Money and effort well spent! Mine is a daily driver.

There should be a 4th partition that will contain all the app data. YOu can use programs like EASUS Partition magic to resize it to the full card amount. Then you should be able to put whatever files you want on that partition.

Ok I am using windows seven 64 bit, I have followed the instructions to a T. I run the win-image as admin and burn the image to my 16gb micro sdhc card. I verify this by clicking on my computer and looking. I insert the card into my nook color and power on, my nook just boots up into the standard nook os! never even tries to load off of the sd card.

After the normal boot I get an dialouge box that pops up and says " SD card in not formated correctly" and gives me the option to format or cancel.

Anyone have this problem? Am I missing something here. IT seems like my nook does not even see the card?

I would say something went wrong when burning the image to your uSD card. Try again, and follow the steps to the T like you mentioned. Another possibility might be the boot files are missing or corrupt. Might need to redownload the files, or grab them from some other mirror.

Also, FYI incase you are going to use adb to access the market. First, attach the NC booted into stock OS. Locate the drivers associated to it and uninstall, then pull out USB, and shutdown NC.

Pop in uSD card, turn on nook, should boot into HC v4, then attach to PC via USB and follow the steps to activate market place via adb.

I assume you have adb properly installed as well as the drivers for NC that allow comms with adb. If not sorry, but plan for this and search this thread (well page one for starters, then i think somehere in the 50s there is a link to access a package that setsup the drivers for you).

Winimage will not recognize my sd card. When i click "restor virtual image to physical drive" a box pops up that is supposed to have my sd drive as an option. There is nothing in the box and i cannot find help anywhere. Someone please tell me what im doing wrong.

Did you run it as an admin? If not, right click then "Run as Administrator", then it will pop up.

Thanx for the reply. I think that we would all like to have a step-by step on how to do this. Does it effect the HC program, does the sd card stay in the NC and the partition is done via usb or do I use the PC to partition the SD card? Where do I get the EASUS program.....etc? Thanx SOOOOOOO much for the info!

Nook App and others need SD card?

I just loaded Honeycomb v4 on my Nook, and it works pretty well. Great job!

I'm getting error messages and crashes from some apps from the market including the Nook app where when it is started, a dialog pops up stating that an SD card is required for the app. For the Nook app, I get my library with the expected titles, but they are only icons and when I tap on one to download it, it give me a error saying "No such file".

Has anyone seen this, and is there a workaround? The threads seem to indicate that the Nook app is working.

Question about installing market - everything seems to work fine until I try to push the files onto the nook - this is the error message -

------
failed to copy 'Vending.apk' to 'system/app/Vending.apk' : Read-only file system
------

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated :)

-------------------------

p.s. nevermind it worked. looks like i got it wrong - i was writing the command "adb shell mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mmcblk1p2 /system" without spaces...

this is my first attempt and step 3 is not working for me: (the usual program for this, Win32DiskImager, isn't working with this large file. So download WinImage, and under 'Disk' choose "Restore Virtual Image to Physical Drive." Change the files shown at the bottom to "all files" and select the file.)

my winimage says "restore virtual image on physical drive" not to

i have no idea how to use the imager actually, i unziped the honeycomb file, but have no idea what to do after that, i really want to try this can some one help me with step 3 please

to/on same thing, probably different verbage on different program WinImage/Win32DiskImager

What you're wanting to do is put the nookhoney04.img file you extracted onto the SD card. It's going to create a few partitions that are labled and with data the are what the HC OS runs from.

I am trying to begin to redo the OP for offline use and to incorporate some of the things mentioned in some of the help posts. If someone who has more clout - Will or anyone else - wants to take a look and fix it let me know. I put things together really fast and didn't include all of the acknowledgements.

how do i place the files in the adb tools folder, do i, do that on the sd card in the computer or do i do that on the tablet itself, i cant get the tablet into usb storage mode. what program do i need to make this happen, i just want the market

Just drag & drop them both into the platform tools folder on the PC. That is where you will run the COM from.

i don't understand the instructions regarding the installation of android market, could someone explain that a little further? I don't know how to open a command window, let alone doing it in a specific window..Is it done on my PC or on the device? Also, how do I even log into my google account?

I'm totally new to this.

Another problem I have is that I used an 8gb SD card and now it's only allowing me to use a small fraction of the memory. Is there some way to fix this?
