[HOW-TO] Download/Install Honeycomb to Nook Color (SD card)

So does having a class 10 SD card vs. a class 4 make a huge difference?

I currently have it working on an 8GB class 4 card. It is kind of choppy, which is expected due to not actually being a tablet, but was wondering if a higher class card made much difference?

Anyone?

Hey,
I'm a noobie, First time posting. I've read through page after page but have not seen an answer for me. Every time I try and write HC to my SDcard using Winimage the card shows up as only 115MB. My NC won't even recognize the SD card when i put it in too. So i go back and format the card using HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool to get it back to the 8G. I can't seem to get the HC on the card at all. I've used 3 different SDcards. I'm running windows 7 64 bit. I run Winimage as an administrator every time. Right now i have a 8GB class 4 card. Any ideas? Any response would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi silentmarv -

I believe (not sure because I'm a total noob as well) that you issue may be caused by a partitian (sp?) on the card.

You may want to correct my spelling and do a search on "partician".

I had same problem and it was fixed one of two ways (not sure which). I had downloaded Winimage from somewhere else. When I deleted and downloaded from site on orig post, it was a different menu and worked. I also right click (run as admin) when I INSTALLED Winimage (ie. the zip or exe install file). that in turn, created 2 icons on desktop...a winimage and a winimage admin. I ran from the second one and it worked.

Anyone know if there is a big difference in performance of 8gb Class 4 vs. Class 10 Micro SD card? I'm currently running Class 4 (a little choppy) and was wondering if Class 10 would be noticeable? If not, I'd rather not spend the $$$

Thanks

Working so far...... page one needs some tips

Well, following the instructions I installed Honeycomb on a 8GB Transcend Class 6 card. Got it running 1st time. Then I checked the remaining storage on the card and it was 1.2GB. After much sniffing through the threads, I found I had to download EASEUS to expand the 1.2GB into the unused space. Next stop was to add the Android Market. More sniffing and I found I had to install the SDK onto my PC. Did that, and began the tedious command prompt process. (How many on here still remember how to navigate in DOS? Got that done and the Market Place app worked first time. Downloaded the Youtube widget and am now downloading both the Nook and Kindle apps. Seem to be stuck in an endless download. I may have to kill them and start again.

Each step worked, but this is hardly a process for a tech nube. I can't thank you enough Will Shanklin! O:-) Perhaps at some point you can update the first post with all these extra instructions as I think most people will go right to that page from a Google search without really knowing the background.

Next I think should be the process for setting up the SD card running Nook Color so that proper Android updates can be done without going through the whole process again.

Cheers! :D

When I try to copy the img file to the sd card, it says "permission denied". What am I doing wrong?

You don't copy the file you use the software to create the bootable card. Also make sure your card is not write protected.

hummm I must be out in right field, I can not find where to save the market files that I have on the pc. and when I am using the nook color booted with sd card, do I go and save those again using the nook? and just where would I save the files?

Anyone having difficulties with getting a PC to use ADB via USB? After hours of not getting the usb drivers to work I finally uninstalled all B&N devices in the device manager and then forced XP to search for new hardware. It finally found the usb drivers and is up and running!

Well, after a little playing I have all working well. No problems with Market Place. However, both the Nook and Kindle apps crash as soon as I try to read something. I can launch them and download books but trying to read anything results in crashing the app. Anyone else having this problem?

Update: Nook reader sorta works. Tap slow and don't use the go back button. That will crash the app. I got Kindle to work but you have to hunt around for the Amazon Kindle v.2.0.4.103870164 apk. The current one on the Android Market kept crashing mine.

I got that the first time and rebooted and it went away. Make sure you wait enough. It can be slow initially......

I have sucessfully followed your instructions on loading Honeycomb via the sd card...not rooting...can go back to the stock nook color config by just removing the card...my question is,,,,

Can I continue this model when following your instructions to gain access to the Andropd Market?

Thank you very much for your help

Yes, you are modifying the card, not the internal memory. As long as you are booted into Honeycomb off the card the installs will go on the card.
