[How-to] Guide to Rooting with software version LS670ZVC

I just wanted to thank everyone who put their time and possibly their phone on the line to come up with this new rooting procedure. This was the first phone ever I rooted. I accepted the OTA but still managed to root.

One note on the instructions, since I'm a real newbie at this, it seems like most posts take for granted a certain level of expertise for things you may consider as super basic. I think I read every post related to the Optimus root, and the tool on the Ally thread as well, and it took several attempts for me to get it right. Just some feedback....

Great job everyone. You deserve thanks and I hope people will donate to your projects for the time and knowledge you bring. Now, before I'm really done, I'm going to learn how to install a custom recovery, then maybe the VCRom???

For my part, if you post or PM areas which would be better off with clarifications, I would gladly make changes. It is best to do this when it is fresh on your mind. It would help others, I'm sure.

I'm having a problem at STEP 6 trying to fire up the ADB shell. I get an error that says:

"- exec '/system/bin/sh' failed: No such file or directory (2) -"

What am I doing wrong?

You didn't successfully run the V8->V9 update.zip from your SD card (step 4). The update.zip is expected to fail but it has a side consequence of mounting /system (and thus /system/bin/sh)

Since /system wasn't mounted, the adb server on the phone cannot start a shell because the shell executable doesn't exist.

Tried to root yesterday. Won't recognize adb shell. Don't know what to do next. Any help?
Could you be more specific. Are you having a problem running adb (meaning you have a problem with your android sdk) or has adb worked before and you are having a problem specific to VC?

What specific error are you seeing?

I feel completely stupid.
I don't understand the steps.
When you say to extract the optimus root file somewhere accessible, does it need to be in the android sdk folder or can it stand alone?

When I try to push from it standing alone it tells me the commands do not exist, or something to that effect.

When I try to put it in the folder, it tells me failed, file does not exist.

I didn't run into this when I rooted before, probably because I was more awake and I'd been messing with my phone for hours.

Sorry if this sounds totally newb. :(

I see the step that I missed, and I followed the instructions but I'm still having trouble. It's with the setting the path in Windows. I set it to c:\android\platform-tools...is that not what it's supposed to be set to?

EDIT: I got it working, but I keep getting hung up when I try to push the su file... Any ideas??

Edit: i fixed it. in my morning stupidness I placed the files on my sd card before trying to push them. >.< ::facepalm::

Thank you very much for this post. It was very helpful..My only suggestion is to maybe make the part about setting a path in windows more bold

Jeez, I leave for a day and a half and already the OTA update issue has been solved! A thousand bravo's to everyone who worked to get this thing figured out.

I've updated the original post to include a link to the force-flash instructions. Personally, I think the force-flash instructions should have their own thread but that's just my 2 cents.

If I got my phone to root without using the updated instructions in the post, do I still have to re-root? I am having issues downloading from the market, but it was working fine before I flashed the custom VC rom so I don't think it has anything to do with rooting but on the off chance that it does... Do I need to reroot with the force flash?

If you already have root, no need to force flash V9.

The reason people need to force flash V9 is if they accepted the OTA VC update, that modifies the recovery partition so you can't root anymore. If you get the VC update through the LG Update Tool, it doesn't touch the recovery partition so you can still root.

Whichever path you took, if you are rooted, then be happy, that is what other people are going through hoops to achieve with a VC update applied.

Thanks!! I am happy, lol. And very appreciative.

I don't actually have sprint service, so I ran into all kinds of problems when I flashed to stock and updated (like the fact that I had to jump through hoops to turn on wifi and install superuser from the market).

Now that I'm rooted I can install a ROM to bypass the sprint ID and be able to use my phone, so I am veryveryvery happy. =]

Thanks again.

If you want, the fastest way to get past Sprint ID is to use Titanium backup to uninstall it.

You could probably also do it by hand by removing

/system/app/W_Installer.apk

I would like to thank everyone for all their hard work in getting this root working for this update. I had ThundeROM on my phone and was able to get it back to stock. I am now rooted with the VC update. Do KSmithInNY buildprops work for this version? I know jit has been enabled, but I would like to enable stagefright and hardware acceleration if they still work. Thanks.

Ah! Thank you. I had seen this somewhere before but I've been too busy today to hunt it down.

I'm trying to get the VC rom to work, but so far the market keeps crashing so I might have to do this instead.

Thanks much!

Ok so my phone is update using the LG updater. So I followed all the new rooting instructions and everything went smooth except it didn't restart my phone in the beginning but I kept on doing it anyway and even the# sign popped up. So when I tried the whole process again and this time its saying it doesn't recognize the paths after I type adb shell. Can someone please help? Thanks so much.

Can you give an exact error message?

Did you remember to install the V8->V9 update.zip (step 4). It is expected to fail, but you need to run it for the side-effect of getting /system mounted.

If you forget that step, the /system partition won't be mounted and adb shell will complain it can't find /system/bin/sh

i accidentally hit the z4root apk on my dropbox som how and now it wont boot past lg screen any suggestions on fixing it
