The phone doesn't restart. What happens is rage kills the adb server on the phone and that kicks you out of your adb shell session.

All you need to do is type "adb shell" again (which it seems you've done) and if you see the "#" in the prompt (which it seems you have), then you are rooted and can perform the rest of the steps.
How do I know if it's rooted? I downloaded superuser and it's not on my launcher only my settting>apps. I downloaded it a couple days ago.

I did that and the $ sign popped up :(
As drew mentioned, turn on your phone and make sure it isn't in a screen saver.

When you type "su" you should see a prompt on your screen asking for root permission. Choose to allow root privileges for su. If you have SuperUser.apk properly installed, it'll remember your answer and use it next time, so you won't have to respond to the prompt.

first off...i'm an idiot....

if i say...didn't extract the recovery .rar and just changed it to .img when i ran the code obviously i would have installed a bad recovery to my phone...so now...it obviusly woun't boot...will emergency mode allow me to fix this? or did i just discover a new way to permenently brick my phone.

I may be premature with this but...yeah, you have a brick. Sorry, mate. Time to call Sprint.

thats kinda what i'm afraid of...was just reading thru the e-mode post and it appears that does not do anything to the recovery partition so....yay...

Just take your phone to a Sprint store, tell them it bricked after the OTA update. They'll replace it for free if you have TEP (insurance).

being a cheap ass i may have declined the insurance...since my last phone i was able to replace with a craigslist special for less then the deductable...now...not so much...

so guess i'll just have to suck it up and take it in the shorts.

IIRC, Sprint will replace a non-insurance bricked phone for $35.

thats not too bad then...calling the local store now to see what the damage is going to be...

still curious if i can fix this though...

is there anyway of telling what i've done to the phone if they plug it in at the store?

If they are so inclined, sometimes they can figure it out, depending on how bad it is bricked and how knowledgable they are.

However most of the time, if you are paying the money, they just try to reboot into recovery a few times and give up if it doesn't work. Often if you are paying money, they just verify it doesn't boot, and order your refurb.

Incidentally, I think you have a one year warranty from LG, but Sprint won't handle those anymore (outside of 30 days), unless you pay $35 to "expedite" it, meaning order you a refurb. Your refurb then only has a 30-day warranty even if your original phone had 11 months of warranty left.

If you wanted to avoid the $35 fee and send it to LG for warranty repair, LG would probably fix it for free under warranty, but when you got the phone back, Sprint's written policy is to apply the $10 smartphone/premium data fee to your line when you reactivate the smartphone.
