How to Root

Hey anyone out there.

:) First post for me here at android central, i'm glad to own an android and the samsung fascinate really makes me proud. I have a question about rooting for anyone out there. I ran the fascinate root_v02 START_ROOT file and followed the youtube video several times...however after the first initial fail every fail after skipped the "three minute waiting period". Im also hit with "device not found" about 6-7 times. For example the program will give me the start time and immediately after it will read "error:device not found" and THEN "Successfully exploited, installing permanant root files and deleting temp files"......and then hit me with 6 "errors" in a row. Meanwhile while all this is going down, my phone is STILL booting up from the initial reset, so it might be possible my phone isnt "awake" yet to recieve these installed files? Sos :o

I am an idiot and can't figure out what to do with the Deroot info on the first page. Do I need to deroot before I go get a phone replacment? Will Verizon be able to tell that it is rooted?

Verizon will be able to tell if its rooted if they have reason to go look. Why are you returning it? I sent mine back rooted and they didnt even bother to ask me if it was. Just handed me a new phone. I will pm you with a detailed method of de rooting.

When you root your phone you should first make sure all of your drivers have installed properly. Sometimes they do not all install correctly. A simple google search will help you there. I am responding to this from my phone so I cant do into too much detail lol.

Before you attempt again do CTRL+ALT+DEL and look for a process called adb.exe. Kill it. Then try again, that might fix it skipping the wait period.

Try following these steps for root as they seemed to help a few others:

1. Download the 64bit drivers and install them (I have the 64bit Windows 7 OS). If you have a 32 bit OS get the 32 bit Drivers.

2. Download the .zip file and unzip to desktop using the extract all button.

3. Go to Settings > Applications > Developement > and Enable Debugging on the phone as well as Stay Awake

4. Plug phone into the computer and wait for it to come up in My Computer.

5. Open the folder on desktop and double click the START_ROOT file from the extracted folder

6. Wait (have patience it will take a while)

7. Rooted.

8. :)

I'm going to give it a try on my own, as I use TouchWiz most of the time and I'm getting tired of seeing all the bloatware.

So, can I root, rename the .apk's that I don't want, then unroot and everything will be like normal? The only reason I want to unroot is because when I test out my apps that I create, I want to make sure they work on an unrooted phone.

You can root and rename the .apk's to .apk.old

However I would not bother with un rooting for two reasons.

1. I am not sure your phone would operate correctly after that. Someone else can correct me if im wrong :)

2. Why un root? Just stay rooted, much more beneficial. Free wireless tethering, some amazing apps you can only use if your rooted, ect ect. If you ever need to return your phone just restore the apk's to their original names and un root. Nothing bad will happen if you stay rooted unless you do something you shouldent to the system files.

Ok. . . so when I try to put in debugging mode, it wants to disconnect the usb cable. Any ideas?

Before you plug in the phone put it in debugging mode. And make sure you have Stay Awake checked too. Then plug in the phone.

I tried again on my sisters computer and it still didn't work. Ir got to the point of restarting and then it said to unlock and when I did the errors popped up again.

When I looked at the system files via Astro I saw some of the files were transferred from failed root attempts.

How can I erase them to see if that may be causing the problem?

I tried via Astro but I don't have the needed permissions...

If that doesn't work how can I do a restore that is better that using the method under the privacy menu?

I'm getting the same results at iTz Nicholas72. I tried mounting first, didn't work either. My one question is how should my phone show up in My Computer? It just shows as a disk drive. Under properties, hardware I see Samsung USB Drive.

I checked the Device manager, no yellow warnings there.

I am returning it because for no apparant reason it drops the network. It will still make phone calls but no 3g.

Cool phone....I will try another one and see if it works.

So I tried restoring the /system using odin hoping that it would fix mt rooting issues but it still gives me the same error.

Im desperate to get my Fascinate rooted...

I have windows 7 64 bit. I installed the 64 bit drivers, and even tried the 32 bit drivers. Every single time i try to run the start_root it says device not connected. It is def connected to my computer and i have the phone in debut mode. Any ideas?

it even shows my phone under my computer, but im having the problem when using start_root. Please someone help me, i want to do this badly!!

I rooted yesterday and removed bloat but I feel like that's all I can really do with it considering it's on 2.1 and not a lot is available. Am I wrong?

im getting errors that it can't find my device.

i have the usb debugging on

and then you mount it as usb storage right?

but its not showing up in "my computer"

Thanks for the response Dirrk, but unfortunately my issue was something far dumber than not following your directions. My sdcard wasn't mounted:(. Sadly it took me awhile to figure that out because of the vague permission denied error. Even after I figured this out I still got temp root before pushing the su/busybox files so I could push the files to system/bin(which I don't think it let me push to that dir before I got temp root).
