How to Root

during the "starting" process, my phone shows an error
com.google.process.gapps has an error and with an option Force Close and my phone just freezes. This didn't happen before because I've already rooted my phone and unrooted back because my SD card blanked out. Now, I'm trying to root again but these problems are occuring :(

Sorry, I'm really new to rooting. I successfully installed the root (I'm assuming), but if I ever wanted to remove it, how would I do so? I see the walkthrough you have posted, but what exactly is the "adb shell"?

OMG I think it worked!

I think I have successfully rooted. I cant seem to find Verizon bloatware at all on my phone. Kernel version says 2.6.29, what does THAT mean?

Now what?

Thanks,

Carlissa

HMMMM maybe I was wrong.....just seen BING!

I have GoLauncher and when i went to choose a widget just now, BING was there. But I cant seem to find it anywhere else. HMMMMM so confused here.

Thanks,

Carlissa

i'm really a noobie and will ask the most basic question first: the first instruction is to download EITHER that 64 bit or 32 bit samsung driver. How do you know which one you need? I have a Fascinate running on Verizon system. Thank you very much.

if you're running a PC, here is a great article with instructions for how to determine if you're running a 32- or 64-bit system. I don't have a Mac, so i don't know how to determine on those.

How to determine whether a computer is running a 32-bit version or 64-bit version of the Windows operating system

this thread should provide you with all needed info

So go down to your start button on your computer, when the startup menu comes up , go to Computer, Right click on it and choose properties the follow window will pop up and under system it will tell you what you have , like this

when you go to get the driver, it usually doesn stay x32 it says something like x86 i dont know why just does lol

sorry, me again. I downloaded and ran the driver set-up, then downloaded and ran the START_ROOT program. It went through all of the motions and restarted. But I don't see anything different on my phone. Once I've run that FascinateRoot_v02 program, and it's done, then what next?

the main thing i want to do with this is to get rid of some of the bloatware as well as make my phone a wireless hotspot without having to pay verizon more $$

thanks

do i have to install SuperUser from market?

also, i downloaded and ran the quadrant program and only clock in at 898. What else do i need to do to speed things up? I see some instructions about lagfix and kernels on page 3 but have no idea what those are and now that this thread is 72 pages long am wondering if there's more recent info.

so, my questions (and I assure you I will make a paypal contribution if i get all of this resolved!):

1. how do i access superuser so i can get rid of a lot of the bloatware? And am i really getting rid of it, or are we just hiding it? (probably better to just hide it, in case i ever need to unroot for warranty purposes)
2. how do i speed the phone up, so i'm not stuck down there in the low quadrant performance scores?
3. how do i make my phone a wireless hotspot for my laptop? is there a program i need to download?
4. is there a page with other programs that are really good for rooted phones (other than development programs, which are beyond me)?

thanks so much

i've just been looking at the news of the release of DL09. All of this is so far over my head. As a non-developer, should I go with DL09 instead, to accomplish what I am looking for (above)? If so, do I need to go back to unrooted first? (All I've done is install the samsung driver and then do the 1-click root.)

is there a simple guide to installing the DL09? Lots of technical jargon on there...

So...on the Wife's Fascinate, I followed the instructions and it's not working. Bit of back story...

I did this once before. Got root no problem and ended up bricking it later...bad...had to Odin the factory system files back on to get it to work again. In the process, root was removed...obviously.

In trying to re-root, the batch file runs through to the part where it pops the time up and tells you to wait 5 min, goes past that to where it restarts again and says "can't find device" or whatever, phone doesn't restart like it's supposed to and the phone is frozen. Gotta pull the battery to reset it. Turn it back on to find no root. Rinse and repeat.

What would cause this?

you may have lost USB support its been happening with the odin restore, we are working with one of the other advisers Adrynalyne to find the root of the problem....fornow try to side load z4root, go to the app drawer open it, and hit permanent should be done in 2 minutes , it will reboot you and you are set

[APP] z4root - xda-developers

i did the one click root and it seemed to go fine (although I can't tell - how do you know?). I did see one different home screen one time afterwards but then it disappeared and i haven't been able to make it come back)

i see the link to this wireless tether program in the initial post: Wireless Tether 2.05-pre9. I scanned the barcode and it downloaded to my phone. i tried to install it but it said "no root" and that a kernel is missing.

I have no idea what this means.

about to just give up...
