[How to] Rooting HTC EVO Froyo 2.2 (Windows)

not to sure what im doing wrong, but its been more then more than 1hr and still get nothing.. im trying to push the pc36img with the command and nothing... how long do i have to wait?

Mine only took a few minutes. Like 5 at most. If you cant use ADB to push it, load your SD card and manually copy it.

hey duran_0091
lol same problem i encounter............but i was able to solve it by
adding the file manually to the sd card.....
add these two files to the sd card mtd-eng.img and PC36IMG.zip........
in the command copy and paste only the two or 3 lines and not the pc36......
example
adb push flash_image /data/local/
adb push rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin /data/local/tmp/
adb push mtd-eng.img /sdcard/

or
adb push flash_image /data/local/
adb push rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin /data/local/tmp/

it will still work b.c you have the files
and i recommend simple root the lates one it work flawless for me (everything unlock you wont see supper user unless you install a stock rooted froyo rom)

Well... I went on the RA one because of so many people complaining one thing or another about Clockwork (cache wiping and such). And I'm not gonna be flashing a new ROM every day so... I guess for my needs, RA does the job. :)

Doc, got a quick question for you. I would like to flash Kernel like you did there. I went to the link you share, which version I should download and flash? I mean, I decide to try Fresh 3 rom later, so I guess i should choose between 4.1.8, but what difference between bfs and cfs version? which one I should download?

Thank you so much

guys, met some problems here. after I use simpleroot1click to root and flash recovery, I unzipped the Amon_RA's recovery into the sdcard root(including busybox, 2.2-root.zip, PC36IMG.zip 3 files). Then i power off, and hold vol down into the HBOOT screen. everything is all good until loading PC36IMG.zip. After checking, it should pop up question to confirm update, but screen back to the menu of HBOOT, I tried a few time, still cannot update. Furthermore, after i hit reboot, it directly lead me to the HBOOT screen. HELP, guys, what should I do now?

Doh. Um I'm not sure what your trying to do here, if you say you rooted with simple root did it work? If so just flash a custom rom? I'm confused..

sorry about confused here, but I used simple root. Then I think i should return to instruction part 2 in the XDA instruction

Part 2
Note: This section would not have been possible without the amazing testing and help of cilio87. He earns a gold star *

Now it's time to finish up the process and flash the stock 2.2 build of Android. You need to do this before any custom ROM in order to re-update the partitions we downgraded in the rooting process.

Step 1: Download either the update zip with

ClockWorkMod recovery included

or

Amon_RA's recovery included

(Either zip contains the final touches to the root process, one flashes clockworkmod recovery, and the other respectively, Amon_RA's recovery)

Extract the 3 files inside the zip to your desktop.

If you are still in recovery (from part one or the guide) go back to the main menu of recovery on your phone (if you aren't already at the main menu, hit vol up & down at the same time) Select
Code:

Reboot System Now

Let the Rom load, and when it gets to the sign in screen for Google, just skip everything and let the ROM boot.

If you are already on a custom rom, boot into it and follow from here.
Once It is fully booted, mount your sdcard onto your computer, and copy the 3 files you extracted from the zip to the sdcard.

Once copied, Unmount your sdcard from the computer.

Step 2: Unplug your phone from the computer. Power it off completely. Now while holding VOLUME DOWN turn on the phone with the power button, continuing to hold volume down. This will boot into hboot. You can release the buttons once you get to the hboot menu. Then, use the volume down button to hover over fastboot, and press power to click on it. This will scan the sdcard for the new PC36IMG.zip you just copied to the sdcard. When it asks "Do you want to start update?" Hit Volume Up for Yes. It will reload the zip and then start the flash. Once the flash is complete (may take 5 or so minutes) Choose NO when it asks you to reboot.

Step 3: After choosing NO to the reboot, you will see a menu again. Select Bootloader from the menu, then use the Volume Down button to hover over "Recovery" and press Power to click on it.
IOf your phone gets stuck at the White EVO 4G screen, pull your battery, and then power on normally. It should boot straight to recovery.
Once you are booted into this custom recovery, go to
Code:

Install Zip from sdcard / Flash zip from sdcard (Amon_RA)

and then (clockworkmod only)
Code:

choose zip from sdcard

You will then see the 2.2-root.zip. Click on that and accept the flash.

Once that flash is complete, return to the main menu of recovery and Select
Code:

Reboot System Now

You now have stock Android 2.2 with root and all updated partitions!

Then the problem shows, can I flash that PC36IMG.zip by recovery?

Sooo I finally found the 3 step Simple Root. After step 1 it reboots the phone. After it loads the zip it shows this:

Main Version is older!
Update Fail

????

Just use the 3 click, then click extras to flash a custom recovery. That's what I did, proven to work.

I used the simple root 1 click, then flash Amon's RA there. it actually works, until i return the part 2 of XDA instruction. What should I do now, do you know?

problem now is i cannot back to phone screen now, stuck in the HBOOT menu screen. I can enter recovery menu(Amon's RA). I m thinking if it's feasible that I can copy XDA 2.2 E2 RUU into the sdcard, then flash it by recovery? is it a solution for me?

Hey all. I successfully used the methods posted here and on XDA to downgrade to 2.1 and start to root from there. Thanks UTnick for your help in the other thread. I managed to solve the exclamation sign.

So far, I have installed:

* [Recovery] Amon RA recovery v1.7.0.2
* [ROM] SteelH's HTC Froyo 2.2 Rev E.2 LINK
* [Kernel] netarchy's toastmod v4.1.8 LINK
* [Radio] EVO Radio v2.15.00.07.28 and EVO WiMAX 26023 R01 LINK

So far, so good. Everything I have tested works. The kernel did made it much faster than the stock one, also FPS uncapped. It feels like a mayor OS upgrade from the stock OTA 2.2. I will be testing everything all day long.

did you use unrevoked or simple root?

Just use the 3 click, then click extras to flash a custom recovery. That's what I did, proven to work.

Sorry to bother you again, but I found someone help me, and now I m back to very beginning. you know, how to do airmode again to change $ to #. Anyways, I just want to ask

1. After step 12, you start to use Simple root in 1---3 click(not 1 click version), right?

2. So, by following software, you just use 1, 2 to root phone, but didnt run the 3rd click, instead, you use the extra menu to flash custom recovery, am i right?
(for extra menu, it wont show up until you root your evo, correct?)

3. so where did you download recovery to flash into evo by simple root?

I m sorry, but, LJ, could you please describe a bit more here for simple root after step 12? I mean,

1. could we use simple root 1 click, or we have to use simple root 1---3 click?

2. if we have to use 1---3 click? should we stop after 2nd click, cuz we need to flash some custom recovery, right?

3. after we flash recovery, do we need to go back to XDA instruction to download those either clock or Aone's RA recovery, and flash 2.2-root.zip in the either zip file?

4. if not, does that mean, we should download that XDA 2.2 RUU E.2.rom , and push to any folder of sdcard before flash recovery and boot into recovery menu? Then, right after into recovery, we can wipe cache, flash that ROM?

Thank you .

Do you have a custom recovery with nand unlocked? (I'll try and help but I've never hears of this problem a most do 3 step root) if you have full root down load a rom, wipe and flash?

If not full root, use the run the 2.1 RUU in the how to unroot thread stickied and use the 3 click method for rooting well that's what I would do anyways. I also use clockwork (call me crazy but it hasn't let me down yet)

If you cannot run the 2.1 RUU, then.. I have no idea. Maybe start over from 2.2 OTA, but skip one click maybe, and do it the hard dirty way.

Give me more info on what exactly you trying to do.

Send LJ a PM, he's the man.

Thanks to all from yet another rooting newb!

Successfully downgraded to 2.1 using instructions here. Rooted with 1-click Simple Root, installed Clockwork Mod.

Only glitch for me is that the first time I tried Simple Root, it didn't successfully push the files, getting a "read-only" file system error. Rebooted my Evo and tried again and it worked that time.

Installed the XDA rooted stock 2.2 rom and did a nandroid backup just as a formality before flashing the AC-ROM from this forum.

Now I'm sitting pretty in giddy city.

Of course, now I need to set everything up again...

Kyle, I'm sorry I think I understand now. Do all 3 steps off the simple root 3 click, the at the top it will say extras. Click that and flash wich one you'd like.

man, may i ask some question about using 1click?

I had some failure last night to use 1-click. if you see my post above 2 page, you will see my problem. but, anyways, I m back to very beginning now. so i can redo everything from step 1.

What I want to ask you are

1. you did update 1-click before your root, right?

2. actually, phone is rooted after before flashing recovery, is that right?

3. did you use extra menu to flash recovery, or just use 2-click button?

4. after flash recovery, did you back to XDA-Instruction? or u just copy the rooted froyo RUU for XDA forum(HTC_OTA_Froyo_2.2_build_3.26.651.6_(Rooted)_Deodex_signed_RevE.2), flash that in recovery menu? (of course, after wipe cache and dalvik)

Thank you, man.

Welcome to root town dwhit.

Thanks, man. I think that's kinda same with 1-click. let me rephrase the problem i met last night. after i flash recovery(RA, not clock), then I rebooted into recovery menu, but i back to xda instruction part 2(if you like, you can take a look)

What did you do after flash recovery? did you just copy that rooted froyo 2.2 RUU E.2 from XDA-fourm, then flash it on recovery screen (flash/install rom from sdcard zip), after wipe cache and dalvik, am i right?
