How to update apps without having to download the whole thing again?

So we know that in Android, whenever an app needs to be updated, you still need to download the whole thing again. I don't understand why can't apps just download whatever changes are needed. Usually i haven't had a problem with this as i mostly use low size apps and don't update frequently(turn off auto updates).
But i am looking to download a game from Play Store that's over 100mb in size, so i wish to know, when if the game requires an update, will i have to download the whole game as update again or just what needs to be updated because some games don't allow you to play online without the latest version installed. I mean i don't have unlimited data plan so its an issue for me.Running stock kitkat 4.4.4. Thanks.
 
Most do just download the updated part. I have had plenty of times when a larger app starts downloading gets to a certain point and it's installing.
 
Yes, google changed it quite a while ago that only the part of the app that is updated gets downloaded .
