HTC battery thread

The battery life ended up being too bad for my wife and I's two Eris. A guy at works Droid had about 80-90% battery while I had 15% after the same amount of use (unplugged at 8am with these %s are from 4pm) with only networking enabled on both. We took them back (best buy you have 30 days) and have Motorola Droids now and I like everything about them. The keyboard on the display model at BB turned me off initially as its like a brick but its actually pretty soft on a real model. In general its also much faster, especially in the browser. #win

I hope so... I love this phone but it's only my third day with it and I'm already thinking about returning it due to the battery life. I charged it overnight last night, unplugged it at 6:00 a.m., ran 10 to 20 seconds of a movie I downloaded on it (the night before), played 10 seconds worth of Labyrinth Lite, checked my calendar for about 10 seconds, and by 8:00 a.m., I was down to 88%. That's ridiculous. I didn't even really use it for more than one minute.

I agree, the battery life after four days of having the phone has not gotten better. I'm not a super user of the device, I stream pandora for a total of one and a half hours using a bluetooth headset and use Advanced App Killer to close out apps that are still running. I've set my exchange and hotmail intervals to 30 minutes and still have to charge the device at night and via my work PC during the day.

I love the device, I hate the battery life. It's worse than the Palm Pre.

+1

They better do something quickly about the battery life issue or they're going to have a lot of returns to deal with...

1. Download Handcent or ChompSMS.
2. Set it up as you like.
3. Open stock htc messaging app, disable all notifications.
4. Close htc messaging app, and never open again.
5. reboot.

It's a bug in the htc app. They have admitted, and fixed it. Waiting for carriers to distribute.

How do you reboot? I downloaded the manual and it only mentions hard-resets, which erase everything...

Replacement battery?

I love the Eris! However, I HATE the battery. My job requires me to go 6-8 hours at a time on occasion without access to a charger, and I don't believe the phone will last that long. I've combed through all the posts for the Eris and the Hero about this and have a few comments:

1. I don't think the messaging app issue on the Hero is present on the Eris. My awake time is currently 17%.

2. I experimented w/ disabling "Always-on Mobile", but I found that everything requiring a connection was sluggish, and I was also a bit concerned about any applications (mail, GTalk, RTM) that require a connection. I have subsequently abandoned that "fix".

3. Is there an option to purchase a larger battery? I would do it in a heartbeat.

I hope there is a viable solution for this phone. I'm intrigued by the rumors about the HTC Passion, but at the end of the day, that will be a HUGE phone, and the Eris is the perfect size. I didn't get the Droid b/c I didn't like the keyboard at all and found it to be rather redundant.

Thanks.

Seidio carries a 1750 mAh battery that is compatible (according to their website) with: For use with HTC TouchPro2/HTC Hero/HTC Tilt II.

It works in conjunction with your current battery door. Not sure if this is compatible with the Eris, but I'm sure it's only a matter of time before they develop one if not.

I know lots of BlackBerry users who have used batteries from this company, and they're all happy.

I just had a chat with Seidio about this battery. Below is my chat:

Jack: Will the Battery for the HTC Hero (Sprint) fit in the HTC Droid Eris (Verizon)?
You are next in queue. We will be with you in just a moment.
Angela: hello
Angela: Which battery is it?
Jack: BASI17HTP2
Angela: Ok let me check for you
Angela: If you go to the website and you click on "Compatibility", you'll see which phones it's compatible with.
Angela: You can use this battery with the Touch Pro 2, Hero, and Tilt II.
Angela: So, unfortunately, it's not compatible.
Jack: Yes. I understand that but the HTC Droid Eris is Verizons version of the HTC Hero? Will it fit? Somebody must know.
Angela: Oh ok, I see what you're saying. Let me check with the product department.
Angela: It's true that Eris is Verizon's version of the Hero, but they are still different.
Angela: This is straight from the product department.
Jack: So it wont fit?
Angela: Unfortunately, it's not compatible.
Jack: Thank you.

So it does not fit. HTC and Verizon need to do something about the poor battery life!

Press and hold power button for 3 seconds. When you release you'll get a pop up. Shut down is one of the options. After it turns off, hit the power button to start it back up.

But see my next line lol.

Thanks! My Eris (as well as the droid) are testing phones for work, and they have no service, so I have been waiting for anyone to tell me if th sleep bug is there. Since it's apparently not, Eris users can ignore my recommendation about killing the stock app and using a third party app. But of course now Sprint has some more 'splainin to do :)

As for the spare battery issue, try one of these:
Amazon.com: Samsung Blue Earth AA battery Powered Emergency Cell Phone Travel Charger / Re-Charger in high grade Brushed Aluminum housing! Solar Power: Electronics
I always carry one in my glove box and it has saved my behind more than once.

Well something I've done seems to have improved my battery. When I started out today, my phone was down to 88% by 7:30 a.m. (I took it off the charger at 6:00 a.m.) with barely any use.

I did the following around 11:00 a.m. and my battery is at 47% and it's 7:15 p.m. I used it throughout the day but it was not extensive by any means. Also, I did very little talking. I did stream some music on my home from Pandora for about 1/2 hour.

Here's what I did:

I downloaded Handcent and installed it instead of the HTC SMS app. Then I installed Automatic Task Killer. I also had GPS, WiFi and Bluetooth turned off. I turned Bluetooth back on on my way home at around 5:30 p.m.

Seems to have improved my battery. Still not fantastic but at least it's acceptable.

I've been going since about 920 am, and it's 920 pm now....I still have some juice left...but not much. Did spend some pretty extensive time on calls today, a fair amount of emails, messed around with the phone some, some facebook....still.....we need a better battery option for sure......maybe it will get better next week?

Today I got to fit a Hero Battery into my Eris and it was a good fit... The Back cover is whats really keeping this battery from not working... Im trying to see if I can get my hands on a back cover and see if I can "Message" it to fit... I've done it on my storm before so lets see if it works...

But YES the Hero Battery will physically fit the Eris... Just a matter of making the back cover fit...

UPDATE***

I got a free Hero battery at work and got the back cover to clip on the top and bottom... The sides dont clip all the way down though... Its only raised a hair so it doesnt bother me because I have a silicon case... Will report the battery differences tomorrow...

Please let the battery cycle thru a minimum of three "drain cycles" before you make any judgement on a poor battery performance. I have been thru this same Eris battery scenario when I first got it........sure I was disappointed....but after three full drain and full charge back NOW I do honestly get a full day of battery life.
BT on for 8 hrs
brightness on half
a total of 80 minutes of talk time
email on constant sync
naturally I have all Googles features set to fetch on a one hour basis
weather set to refresh every hour.
browse for a total of half hour
send recv on an average of 60 texts.
set the device to turn off screen after 10 mts.

So, if the Seidio 1750mAh battery will fit a standard Sprint Hero (not to be confused with the 3500mAh they are developing that comes with a special "deep" backplate) and the standard 1500mAh Sprint Hero battery fits the Droid Eris -- then the Seidio 1750mAh Sprint Hero batter will fit the Droid Eris.

The 1750mAh battery is a 34.6% improvement over the stock 1300mAh battery. The Sprint 1500mAh battery is a 15.3% improvement over the 1300mAh battery.

Seems to me it might be worth getting the Seidio battery if you aren't lucky enough to get a free Sprint battery like ChevyDude.

Or, if we all submit requests to Seidio asking them to begin development on an Eris 1750mAh battery they may do so (I have done so already). They are already working on a Moto Droid battery.
