[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: Can't seem to purchase a phone at BestBuy.com

Knock on wood, everything appears to have worked. Activated the Galaxy Nexus this morning, despite the broken screen, with the spare Sim card.
I thought it was bs that the SIM cards eventually get permanently deactivated. The Verizon reps give out so much inaccurate info it is ridiculous.

Once it was up and running, turned it off, and put the Sim in the Galaxy S4. Verizon website shows S4 as current phone, and still unlimited data. Hoping it stays that way. Thanks for the trouble to walk me through it.
It will stay as long as you don't involve Verizon for the next 14 days. Glad it worked for you!

Re: Bestbuy Mobile Lets me Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon?

Will do. Verizon put me back on unlimited
So awesome!!!

I'm seeing in another thread that Best Buy called someone and changed their plan.
No, it wasn't Best Buy. Best Buy flagged his order as suspicious because of the different credit cards he used on 2 successive orders. They called him and took the hold off of his order but then tried to put the order through and it wouldn't go through. So THEN the Best Buy rep called Verizon to resolve the problem and that was the death of his UDP.

No one who has not either turned the phone on before removing the SIM card it shipped with or involved Verizon in the process somehow has lost their UDP. No one.

"I definitely would like to hear from others who have done the alternate switch who have checked their UDP line's after using the Activate/Switch feature on MyVerizon.... do you still see a pending order? if so.... how long ago did you order and switch your phones?"

!!Verizon will not activate a used 4G sim of any kind on a line!!
Even if you had a sim card on your plan and then deactivated for 24 hrs, and even less, they won't do it. It creates a security loophole and possible billing nightmares. If you were able to obtain a brand new one, which customer service may do for you, provided you have a phone to support it (ie. you tell them you are activating a phone) but they will tell you to take said phone into a corporate store and they will give you one for free.
One issue here is that you will still have a pending order on your line and technically, they aren't supposed to make additional changes until any outstanding order is complete, again, to minimize billing disputes.
You may be screwed because you're switching from 3G to 4G and the loophole for Verizon is following the sim card that has the Unlimited data. (They have issued an official statement to that effect) but like another poster here said, don't attempt this with a pending upgrade..
As for the Pending change hanging, I just had this same issue and the CSR deactivated/reactivated the line to clear it.. It was there for 4 days prior and I needed to do another upgrade.

I have been playing the Unlimited upgrade swap game for 3 upgrades so far, and soon to be 4. I'll be checking back in a week to see how you fared. Good luck.

You can do this online yourself. Once again (and again and again and again and again and again ad nauseam) DO NOT INVOLVE VERIZON IN THE PROCESS. ONLY A FOOL ASKING FOR THEIR UDP TO BE LOST WOULD INVOLVE VERIZON.

Now hopefully, people WILL STOP INVOLVING VERIZON IN THE PROCESS, DUMB, DUMB, DUMB, DUMB.

You can activate a "used" 4G SIM yourself online. Easy as pie. No need to involve some dumb a-- Verizon rep. Someone on the other thread just did it with a GNex that has a cracked screen and has been sitting around inactive for some time.

I did NOT go from 3G to 4G. The new phone from Verizon came with a new sim. The new phone with the new sim was first activated on the capped data line....waited about 24 hours then swapped the new sim to the old 4G android phone that was on the capped data line.... then put the SIM from the 4G UDP line in the new phone. Current status, both lines still active with 4G service and cell service.

I am going to sit tight for now as SmithlandCart suggested.... but I will keep the activate/deactivate a line in mind if the issue does not clear after a billing cycle.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Hi all, I've been lurking for a while watching these threads, and my single line plan is finally upgrade eligible. I went to the BB site, and it seems like all of the best phones say "Not available for shipping". I was considering the Samsung G4, or more recently considering the Droid Maxx, but it doesn't look like either is available unless I'm willing to pick up in a store, which I know is pretty much doom for my unlimited plan.

Current phone is a Razr Maxx, love the battery, but the phone seems slow and bogged down, and the camera is horrible. Definitely ready to upgrade.
Guessing I should wait a week and see if anything changes on the site?

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Fyi the Droid maxx does not seem to work with this method, some have reported that they were asking to choose a new plan when ordering this phone

Droid Maxx is the one phone this method doesn't work for because the Best Buy system forces you to pick a new plan. Why it is so for this phone and not any other, I don't know.

My suggestion if you want the Droid Maxx is to buy an iPhone with this method, sell it, and use the money you make off of the transaction to buy a Droid Maxx. An iPhone 5s 16GB is selling for $150 at Best Buy which is $50 more than the Droid Maxx. You should be able to get $550 for a mint 16GB iPhone 5s on swappa and net $500.

So if you used your proceeds to buy a Droid Maxx, it would end up costing you $150 more plus more tax than if you bought the Droid Maxx subsidized through Best Buy, but it is your only option if you want that phone brand new, want to use your subsidy and want to keep your UDP.

There is a brand new never been used Droid Maxx on swappa now for $400 so that is another option if you flip the iPhone.

I haven't switched sim cards for nearly 2 years, so I was going off my experience from that time. I was switching from a Droid charge to a Rezound. I tried switching back 1 week later, online myself and it wouldn't allow it. It of course said to contact customer service. After contacting them was directed to a corporate store and they reinforced, They would not reactivate a sim, even if it was my account previously.
Since then I cut my own sim card down to fit my HTC One, soon to switch to a Max, so I won't have to bother for a while until I have to cut it down to a Micro sim if I can hang on to unlimited that long.

I totally agree, "Don't Poke The Bear!" If you can muddle along without getting an incompetent rep on the line, do it. I've been fairly lucky that I've spoken to reps that are sympathetic to our cause and go out of their way to say, if you want to keep it that way, do this. :)

I'm happy to inform everyone that I have received my note 3 activated it and still have UDP.

I must've misunderstood on the phone you switched from 'Dinc2', which is 3G isn't it? Either way, I agree with SmithlandCart about leaving VZW out of the process as much as possible.
I did want to clarify though, I only called because I needed to make another upgrade switch on one of my Dummy lines so I could take advantage of $100 credit. I was lucky enough to get probably the smartest rep I've ever spoken with at Verizon. She told me what she did to clear the pending account change, I didn't ask anything specific other than indicating why I needed to clear the pending change.
Glad to see there is still so much support among us 'legendary data users'.

Awesome!!!! I hope everything goes well returning your wife's and you get her UDP back too.

Remember everyone - keep Verizon out of it. And if you get a call from Best Buy, cancel the order. Don't risk that Best Buy will try to involve Verizon. Verizon cannot be involved at all in the process or you will be screwed out of your UDP by Verizon.

Yeah they told me the only way to get her UDP back is to refuse the phone they shipped me. Then I guess ill try again.

Is it shipping signature required? If so, then it is easy to refuse but if not, they just leave them at the doorstep and scan it in as delivered.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Can you order a phone online for in-store pickup? that way the order is processed and the plan not changed when you buy it, then all you have to do is pick up the phone and refuse to let BB activate it or anything, just say you'll do it when you get home. Or am i missing something?

Every new phone that I had gotten from Verizon has required a signature

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

I really would like a G2 and since I'm not sure when/if they'll get it back in stock, I was thinking about doing what someone mentioned earlier about just picking up an iPhone 5s and then selling it to get the money for a G2. I imagine I would have to open up the 5s and activate it using an old SIM card before selling it because if I didn't as soon as the buyer turns on the phone the UDP goes away. Could I pull the SIM card out prior to selling and sell it as New with a note that the buyer has to provide their own SIM card?

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hi All ,I've search this thread and a few others about keeping UDP but haven't found a solution for my situation. I have nationwide talking text family share 1400* with 2 lines/( the old plan.) My line is UDP w/ discounted upgrade 3/16/14, the other line is 2 gig data plan iPhone 4 . What would be my best options for getting a new phone at a cheaper price and keep my UDP? I apologize ahead of time if this is already been answered.

You would absolutely need to pull the SIM card and throw it away before you sold the phone. Even if you didn't have an UDP you would never sell a phone with a SIM card that had been active on your account. Used phones are not sold with their SIM cards in them. Buyers always need to provide their own SIM card if they are buying a used phone.

As for not activating a subsidized phone before you sell it, if you do that you will be left with a pending order on your phone line. This may clear by itself over time. It may not. If it doesn't, you will have to call Verizon and have them remove it from your account. They will question you about why you didn't activate the phone and then you will have a rep looking into your account. So I would recommend activating the phone with an old SIM card in it so that you do not have to explain to a Verizon rep why you have a pending activation on your UDP line.
