[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hi All ,I've search this thread and a few others about keeping UDP but haven't found a solution for my situation. I have nationwide talking text family share 1400* with 2 lines/( the old plan.) My line is UDP w/ discounted upgrade 3/16/14, the other line is 2 gig data plan iPhone 4 . What would be my best options for getting a new phone at a cheaper price and keep my UDP? I apologize ahead of time if this is already been answered.

Go online to Verizon's website and transfer the upgrade from the unlimited line to the non unlimited line and activate the phone on the non unlimited line first.

What do I do with the iPhone that's already on the existing 2gig line do I need to transfer the phone to the UDP line first before buying and activating the phone on that line?

Then you won't be able to activate a new phone on the line. You can't have 2 phones active on a line at the same time.

You are only going to have the iPhone shut off for 5 minutes to activate the new phone on the line and then you need to wait for the pending activation to clear the line, which may take up to 30 minutes. Then you can put the iPhone back on the line. The iPhone must be shut off during this process. If you can't shut the iPhone off for the 30 minutes it takes to do this, well, then you can't do this.

Also, sometimes the pending activations get stuck which could add some more time to this.

Both lines are being used
you only need to shut the phone off for about 30 minutes to do this. But sometimes things take a bit longer if the pending activation gets stuck.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

What are the odds this trick will still work when the S5 comes out April 11? I'm crossing my fingers.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Thanks for the reply. It definitely sounds like activating it is the way to go.

Now I'm confused though on how I would go about getting a SIM card for the 5s that I would like to get my wife since her iPhone 4 doesn't have one. I was planning on buying a Razr from a guy on Craigslist and using the SIM card from that one (after cutting it down) but he flaked out. I must be missing a step somewhere. Would I buy an old phone that uses a SIM card (but doesn't have one) and then call up Verizon to ask for a SIM card to use in it? Then activate the new SIM in the old phone I buy and then use the activated SIM in the 5s when it comes? I appreciate your patience as I figure this all out.

your guess is as good as anyone else's unless someone has some inside knowledge from Best Buy or Verizon.

yes, as long as you have a 4G LTE phone in hand when you walk into a corporate verizon store, they will give you a SIM card for it to activate it on your account. You are allowed to buy a used phone to use on your account. That is not a problem at all. And people shouldn't be selling their phones with the previously activated SIM cards in them because that can screw up their account. So Verizon will not think anything unusual is up if you say I bought this phone used and I need a SIM card to activate it on my account. Happens every day.

Then activate the new SIM in the old phone I buy
Yes, verizon reps will do that for you when you bring it to the store for the SIM card. In fact, they won't let you leave with the SIM card without activating the phone with it in it.

and then use the activated SIM in the 5s when it comes?
yes. Then sell the used phone when you are done with it.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Great. Thanks again for the help. I guess I hadn't thought everything all the way through to the end, since I didn't think about selling the old phone as soon as I'm done with it. I guess as long as I get a decent deal on the used phone, I'll be able to get my money back out of it.

I guess I'm all ready to give it a shot. I'll order the new phone tonight and set to work on finding a used one nearby while I wait for the new one to be delivered.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

OK I am sure this has been answered a few times, but I read through quite a few pages and I have not seen an exact situation so here is mine.

Line A: Unlimited Data: Droid RAZR Maxx Up 7/1/15
Line B: 4GB data (29.99 promo data) Droid RAZR Maxx upgrade available
Line C: 2GB data iPhone 5S upgrade available

What is the best way to go about getting the Galaxy S5 for line A when it comes out?

obviously you want to buy a used one with the same size SIM card as the 5s, which is a nano SIM card. Swappa is a good place to buy used phones. You can flip iPhones pretty easily so if you can afford to buy an iPhone 5c used, I would. It uses a nano SIM card and you should be able to sell it for what you bought it for and maybe even make a profit off of the deal if you can find a good deal on one.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

The GS4 shows back in stock, now for $49 (guessing this is in anticipation of the S5 coming soon)
I placed the order, selected "keep existing" the whole way through. Once it arrives I'll swap in the SIM from my Razr Maxx and cross my fingers.

Once I install my old card and boot the phone, will I need to go online and activate the device, or should it just work? I know to not call verizon or Bestbuy for pretty much any reason.

Thanks all for the great resource.

It will just work. If it doesn't for some reason, post here and we can try to troubleshoot for you.

Use either Line B or Line C's upgrade. Unless Line B would lose it's promo data if you upgraded. I don't think the double the data promos are lost by upgrading but idk.

We could swing the cost of 5c, but I was really hoping to put less into the used phone even if I plan to flip it. Not sure why. I've read that you can cut down SIM cards and was planning on doing that unless that wouldn't work for something with a micro SIM.

I have a lead on a S3 as the used phone for my LG G2, which I believe use the same size SIM.

After reading about the S4 being back in stock I checked the G2 and it looks like it is available too!!

you can definitely cut down a SIM card and usually it is fine but sometimes it doesn't work right after you cut it down.

So order the S5 online (when its out) for line C, activate the S5 on line C, then reactivate the iPhone on line C, then activate the S5 on Line A?
