[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Wow. So upgrade transfers within the same account are done?

Yup. Verizon basically killed that option on November 15th. It can still be done, but when you go to move the phone on to the unlimited line it converts it to a 2GB tiered plan. Verizon has eliminated just about all known loopholes. The only things that are sort of working are:

1.) Buying a subsidized device, selling it, and using the proceeds to buy something else
or
2.) Changing your phone number or using the porting trick to Google Voice would allow you to use the subsidized device on the unlimited line

Those two things are really the only things that seem to still be working.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Are you positive on that? I think he's referring to a transfer from UDP to TDP, activation on the TDP line, and then switch the phone. Last I read the slickdeals thread this method had not yet been confirmed as safe or not.

The slickdeals thread has it in big bold letters not to do the 4ever method (which is your basic transferring of the upgrade). If Verizon is really using the IMEI, then it won't work. This would also explain why the changing of phone numbers/Google Voice porting would break it.

Basically, a subsidized phone should now never make it onto the unlimited line on the same account?

Will they kill UDP on other accounts if the phone is brought over?

I looked after posting here and saw that, but when I read through the thread I didn't see any confirmation of UDP being lost via that method. There are a lot of unknowns.

Looks to me like JulesJam thinks it might be risky but her posts come across like it's known fact, see post 18373, which at this point it doesn't appear to be.

Personally, I think a warning that we don't know what might happen is fair but as phrased it spreads disinformation.

That's fair and I agree with the way you phrase it better than the way Jules does.

Both of those answers are unknown at this point until people test it.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Can you still activate a phone you have already purchased that has no subsidy or anything...like a swappa phone?

Yes. Used or full purchased are fine to activate. It's just the subsidized that are causing problems.

Who is Jules?

JulesJam. It's a username of someone who used to post over here (in this and many other threads) before becoming enraged about something. She tends to bounce from forum to forum before having disagreements with a moderator that leads her to moving to somewhere else. Right now, she is "running" the Slickdeals thread where others basically defer to her for everything. She is very knowledgeable, but also extremely opinionated and can rub people to wrong way.

But what if you just bought a new but subsidized phone someone else is selling? Don't think we know the answer to that one.

Very true. There are still a lot of unanswered questions out that need to be tested.

Someone at slickdeals has reported that they sold a subsidized phone to someone who has activated it on a Verizon account and the seller didn't lose his UDP.

So if that's true technology two people here could get subsidized phone and switch them with each other and be good.

I feel like there's an echo in here. ;)

Hmm.

Here's a ponder:

I have a UDP line with an upgrade available
You have a UDP line with an upgrade available

We both purchase via the BB method, and exchange.

The phones get activated outside our individual lines, and never come back to us.

In theory......that is a way around, no?

All kidding aside, this seems like something I may try to do.

That, or as has been suggested, buying a subsidized phone. Selling it and using that money to buy a full price phone.

I'm considering that option, since I'd like a Note 5, and they seem to be selling for very cheap on BB. I'll just use my gift cards, sell it on CraigsList or something, and then take advantage of the Samsung Black Friday deals that I've been seeing for the full price phone. I may even come out slightly ahead in the game.......
