[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

And the best part is that you still have the UDP lol...that's what matters

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I have spent 2 hours in this thread. Reading, making notes, Im overwhelmed. One person says BBM still works, next person says have to simply pay retail or do verizons payment plan (still paying retail). Help. :(

Line 1 - husband/UDP/got bumped to extra$20 in Nov/Galaxy S4 phone/upgrade available.

Line 2 - my line/UDP/avoided $20 somehow bc im still in contract/Galaxy S4 phone/upgrade available.

Line 3 - Daughter phone/TDP/iphone/upgrade available

Line 4 - Daughter phone/TDP/iphone/no upgrades available.

Want Galaxy S7 from Best Buy ($299 versus $700 Verizon payment plan/$33 a month for 24 months).

I have no clue at this point what my options are or arent.... BBM?? swapping upgrades with a friend or family member?? And the buying to sell then buy again has my head spinning. I wish someone could write a brand new, updated thread on what options there really are and dummy proof it. Your help and time to reply to my specific situation would be immensely appreciated!!!!

BB method a phone on your line. You should then sell the phone. If you get back on contact you might avoid the $20 price hike. Destroy the sim and never activate the phone on your line or account.

I would then use the upgrade on line 3 to get your phone.

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Just another data point. Upgraded my ULD line at BB -- picked a $1 phone that was $400 off or so. When it arrived, I destroyed the SIM card, and sold it on Swappa. Got enough to cover shipping, paypay fees, a brand new Note 4 (for $299), and a repair on a iPhone 6 screen at Apple! Still have ULD, contract is 2 years, no $20 "FU" fee, and not even an upgrade fee!

Do this while we still can!

So the only thing you want to do is get an S7 on Line 2?

Curious, what are the contract end dates for the lines that are still on contract?

Here's what I would do:

1. Order a SIM cutting tool from Amazon.
2. On Line 3 (TDP, upgrade available), order your S7 from Best Buy or Verizon.
3. When you get receive it, activate it on Line 3.
4. After the S7 has been used on Line 3, remove the Line 3 SIM and put it back in Line 3's iPhone.
* I'm assuming the Line 3 iPhone uses a nano SIM.
* I'm assuming the Line 2 S4 uses a micro SIM.
5. Remove the micro SIM from Line 2's S4.
6. Use the SIM cutter tool to cut down Line 2's micro SIM to nano size.
7. Put the cut down SIM into the S7 and power on.

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So I need help with this...

L1 UDP; Upgrade Available
L2;TDP
L3;TDP; Upgrade Available
L4;TDP
L5;TDP
L6;TDP

I too have read these pages of instruction and am more informed, but kinda lost as to what works and what doesn't. So how would I upgrade my L1 w/ UDP. Obviously I want to keep my UDP so would i transfer my upgrade and to L2 or something then upgrade it or what? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!

What phones? (Asking because of SIM swaps)

I'm assuming L1 hasn't been hit with the extra $20 charge for UDP.

I would transfer L1's upgrade to either L2,/L4, L5, or L6 to get L1 back on contract. Never put the phone purchased with L1's upgrade on L1.

Then I'd use L3's upgrade to get the phone that L1 wants. Activate and use it on L3 before swapping L1's SIM into it.

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

@EnragedNinja:

I'm in the same boat as you - two UDPs, both upgrade-eligible and contract expiring soon.
Did you use BB to purchase the subsizided phones, or straight from Big Red? Will both work?

L1: UDP, upgradable, contract 6/14/16 (mine)
L2: UDP, upgradable, contract 6/14/16 (spouse)

Plan is to upgrade mine and use spouse's SIM, and vice versa. No risk of swapping SIMs back. Will I be in the clear, and do I need to order the phones from BB or VZW directly?

Thanks,

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I have 5 lines all together

L1:UDP, upgradable, out of contract, already paying $20 extra
L2:UDP, upgradable
L3:TDP, upgradable
L4:TDP, upgradable
L5:Basic, not upgradable

I don't want to mess with L1, or L5 at the moment. What I want to do is upgrade L2, L3, and L4 and not lose UDP on L2. In the past, I have done this through Sam's Club, and wonder if that will still work. What I expect is to upgrade L3 which is TDP, activate, use, then move that phone over to L2. Transfer the upgrade from L2 to L3, upgrade and activate, and move it to L4, then transfer the upgrade from L1 to L3, and upgrade L3. This would leave me with an upgrade still on L4, which at a later point, I could use to get the Note 6 when it comes out, and move that to L1.

No phone would be used on the same line that it's upgrade came from. The L2 upgrade would end up on L4, L3 upgrade would be on L2, and L1 upgrade would be on L3.

Does this still work?

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Like many of you I've spent hours reading through these posts. I'm not savvy on cell phone speak. So here's my question. For years I've upgraded on other lines on my plan becasue I'm the only one with UDP. My folks have simple phones and when they needed a phone I'd find them they're same phone refurbished online. They're in their 70s and 80s and don't like learning a new phone. I'm assuming I cannot do that anymore without losing my data? That's my question. I don't understand nano sims or any of the other stuff lol just need to know if I need a completely new or good used phone or risk losing my UDP? I have a galaxy s5. It's dying, but I do have insurance. They sent me a new phone when my other one was acting up. The one they sent was just as bad!! I've had it about a year and it's a day to day thing if it is gonna survive. I do have an old Note 2 that my mom uses at a tablet at home because it's smaller than her tablet, and she just likes it better, I can use it in an emergency, but hate to go back to it. I am disabled and out right buying a phone isn't really feasible. Thanks for any answers.

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

You can buy basic phones refurbished online did your parents without affecting your udp

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So I want to pull the trigger and upgrade this week. My girlfriend and I both have separate UDP so we will both upgrade, swap phones, and use our own old SIM's. Hopefully that keeps the plans and avoids the $20 charge.
My question is if I should upgrade through Verizon's website or the Best Buy site?

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Will you get phones using the 2 year contract price or device payment plan? If you get phones on a 2 year contract price, you can get some really good deals...Verizon offered me the iPhone SE 64 gig for 29.99 with a 2 year contract ...I could have gotten that phone, sold it for over $450 on Craigslist and put the extra cash toward the phone I really want ...so weigh your options carefully ...

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So with the "new" Best Buy method, does anyone know if it matters if I order the same phone I'm eventually going to be purchasing? My situation is that I want to get the new HTC 10, but Best Buy doesn't have it available for shipping, only for store pickup. If I purchase the Galaxy S7 (which is available for shipping), sell that, and THEN buy the HTC 10 at full price, is that going to present a problem?

It does not matter. I would just get the phone you can make the most money on when you sell it.

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Family 700min plan
L1: GS4, UDP, upgrade available (out of contract, paying $20 extra)
L2: GS4, UDP, upgrade available (out of contract, paying $20 extra)
L3: basic flipphone, upgrade available (out of contract)

Want to upgrade L1 and L2 to GS7's. I realize I can do the Device Payment plan for both (so pay $20/line + ~$30/line for DDP per month -ugh). If I could upgrade for $199 each (and accept 2-year contracts), that would work for me, if I can do it). I see they also have a buy-one-get-one-"free" (really prepaid Visa card for the DDP total for the second) - but it requires adding a line for 6 months (which would include data). I suppose I could do that on one UDP line, add a line and then move the second G7 from the new line to the 2nd UDP line, and cancel the new line after 6 months. Rather expensive way to save part of the cost of one phone (~$670 - 6*(minimum line price)).

Can we upgrade L1 and L2, swap phones (IMEI!), burn the SIMs, and move/cut-down the existing GS4 sims (or get replacement nano SIMs - did that ~ 3 years ago when upgrading to the GS4s from GS3s)?

THANKS!

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I want to post here because I know people are in the process of upgrading. If you don't want to spend full price on a new phone, I suggest getting one off ebay. Well, I mean get a very recently released phone there. It doesn't matter how much it costs. Case in point, I picked up a "used" Turbo 2 from ebay for $280. Much cheaper than the $600 Verizon wanted. I got the phone and found there was an issue with it. I contacted Verizon and they immediately sent me a new one under warantee. Why? Because the release date of this phone is 8 months ago so it CANNOT be out of warantee no mater where I purchased it. Now I know I picked up a Motorola phone and that Verizon is the exclusive marketer of these phones but the S7 may work out the same way. Just offering this as food for thought for those who don't want to muck with their plans by "upgrading" and fighting Verizon to keep their UDP.

Thank you again for the response! So then your original instructions are valid even after seeing how old these upgrades are? I think I do have the $20 up charge already.
