[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

It is my understanding that Verizon allows a customer to move phones within their own account to a different line. So the idea is you upgrade a dumb line with the phone you want then reactivate the dumb phone and move the new phone to a different line/number within that account. Transfer upgrade to the dumb line and repeat the process. You will still have a contract for two years on the new phones you upgraded but they are now on the phone numbers you wanted. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Ok so I'm paying 175/month for two phones. I get 1400min and unl data.

Few questions..

- Since I have two phones will I need two dummy lines? How much $ will be added to my month bill. This means ill have two open phone lines doing nothing?

- My current plans stays the same, meaning my 1400min and data? But ill be able to get new phones at upgrade price but two yr contract will need to be renewed?

You only need one dummy line.....you can transfer an upgrade to it, get the new phone, then move that phone over to an unlimited line. Then you repeat the process with the upgrade from the other unlimited line...transferring the upgrade, getting the new phone, then switching that phone over to the unlimited line. If I read correct, the dummy line will cost you about $10/month additional.

Your new "dummy line" will be under a 2 year contract, essentially locking you in. Your 2 unlimited lines will not be locked into the new contract.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Costco best buy and Verizon it can be done at.

I hope I can find a "nice" rep at either that will do this for me. I've decided on the HTC One and the Max plan realy seemed tempting only because I do not use data like I used to streaming music. I like the Edge plan if I had to get a 2 year contract due to the early upgrades.

I was told this tonight during the chat with a verizon rep on vzw.com

I see ok so then here is what we can do for you! we add 2 ghost lines for $10 each a month and use the devices
you get with that to transfer over and keep your unlimited data!

You add a line as you normally would by ordering with me then you would follow a small process to
manually accept the terms and conditions of the line whereby releasing your new device to be activated on
your current line without disrupting the data leaving the new line deviceless and as a basic line so you can use
that upgrade to keep unlimited each upgrade cycle.

I would need two dummy phones?

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

No, you only need one dummy line. It can be on a single line plan or part of a family plan, but it must be on the same account for the transfer to work.

1. The line or lines that transfer the upgrade to the basic line---i.e. the ones that have Unlimited Data in the first place---can be considered the "donating" lines, since they are transferring their upgrade to a line that isn't upgrade eligible.

2. The basic or tiered line that doesn't have unlimited data and is not normally eligible for an upgrade, can be thought of as the "receiving" line, since it is receiving an upgrade from the donating line.

The receiving line can accept multiple upgrades from multiple donating lines, so that's why you only need one per account.

When a donating line transfers an upgrade to a receiving line, the donating line will have their contract extended for 2 years but keep unlimited data.

The receiving line will lose unlimited data if they had it, or get a tiered data plan regardless. However, it will NOT have the contract extended.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Im all set to do this, but one thing that i need to know is...will this ONLY work if i purchase the phone from verizon?

I want to purchase the phone from amazon or radioshack, would it still work?

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hi everyone,

Great thread. Learned a lot of information. I would just like to verify that I would still be able to do the following as Motorola has a sweet off-contract deal for the Moto X on this coming Monday (32Gb for $400) and will grab that in case the following does not work.

I'm on a family plan with the following set up:
Mom - smartphone - 2Gb
Dad - smartphone - 2Gb
Myself - smartphone - unlimited - upgrade available
Brother - smartphone - unlimited - upgrade available
Sister - smartphone - 2Gb

Proposed method: I transfer my upgrade to, and purchase the Moto X through my mom's line. Moto X arrives at my door and I activate it as planned on her account. I then deactivate the Moto X, and reactivate her phone. Leaving the Moto X to be activated on my line and allowing me to retire the ol' Bionic.

Hopeful outcome: I have Moto X on my line with unlimited. She keeps her fruit phone with 2Gb limit. All is happy.

Am I missing anything?

Any information is helpful, and thank you to those who've already contributed.

Seems to me that there are two scenarios -- with regard to switching lines -- which might (or might not) trigger a deactivation -- with a 3rd party vendor (such as Amazon or Wirefly).

1) Upgrade (or Add) Dummy Line with Tiered Data Plan -- transfer upgrade to it -- then downgrade Tiered Data Plan to Basic later (after switching lines.)

or

2) Existing Line already HAS SmartPhone with Tiered Data Plan -- transfer upgrade to it -- no change in Services/Data Plan afterwards (after switching lines).

In Scenario 1 -- Verizon loses revenue. (Going from Tiered Data Plan to Basic.)

In Scenario 2 -- no loss of revenue.

Therefore, it seems more likely that Scenario 1 would trigger a deactivation -- and kick in the Secondary ETF. Make sense? (And would explain why some folks have reported no issue with it.)

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I just completed the process upgrading a flip phone line and then switching my new LG G2 back to my unlimited data line. Everything seems to be fine except when I was reactivating the flip phone back to the upgraded line I had to choose a data plan. I selected the $10.00 plan. Is this something new or can I call in and have the data plan removed? It doesn't give me an option when I go to my account on Verizon. Or will it be taken off automatically?

It should be taken off automatically, but check back later. If not just call them.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

im having some problems understanding this.

I bought the galaxy note 3 from verizon this morning.
I activated it online, everything is working.

When i try to switch my dumbphone back on the line im greeted with this message :

"Your request cannot be completed
Our records indicate you recently purchased a device for this MDN but have not activated it yet. You have the option to proceed after you have activated your new device, or you may contact Customer Service at (800) 922-0204 for further assistance."

Did i do something wrong...?

Also, when i do get the flip phone back on the line. Am i supposed to use the sim card that came with the galaxy note 3, or the one from my galaxy nexus with unlimited data?

Most people have reported just calling and having it taken off. I've found the online chat support very convenient too, less frustrating than going through the phone menu. It might fall off automatically but can't confirm as I haven't heard anyone waiting long enough to find out.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I have transferred my upgrade from my unlimited line to my dummy line online twice now, but everytime I log back in, the upgrade is back on my unlimited line. I want to upgrade through Best Buy, not verizon so I need the transfer to stick once I log off. What am I doing wrong?

Also, Best Buy doesn't charge a fee if I drop the data plan on my dummy line after I upgrade and switch the phone to my unlimited line, correct? But Amazon does, correct?

You can't transfer and log off without getting a phone. Once you transfer online you have to get a phone other wise it just goes back.

So how can I upgrade at Best Buy? Will they do the transfer for me?

They should, mane sure there are no extra fees when you take the new phone off the line to move it over.

Thanks, I think only Best Buy and Verizon (and maybe Costco) don't charge the extra fee. Can anyone confirm?

I have heard the same but if it was my money I would make sure myself before I do it.

Does anyone know if Wirefly's transfer eligibility's feature is legit?
