[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Tried the whole process of deactivating, activating, twice on a line that the plan switched to 2gb with the upgrade.
I am not following what you did. Walk us through what you did - presumably you transferred an upgrade from an UDP line to a basic line but I am having a hard time figuring out what you did from what you have written.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Sorry,

Yes, I transfered a upgrade from Line 2 to Line 1. Both of the lines were UDP, until I upgraded Line 1.

Once I received the phone in the mail I activated the phone (iPhone 5s) on Line 1, which then the plan for this line switched to 2gb. It showed on my verzion account as the phone that was now newly activated, I made a few calls, googled a few things, and then went online to the switch/activate device and reactivated the original phone that was on Line 1 (droid razor). After the pending order went away I went back to the switch/activate section trying to then activate the iPhone 5s on Line 2.

When I went online to attempt to then activate the iPhone 5s on Line 2 which still has the UDP, the phone does not show in the switch/activate section as a device previously used on the account. It keeps attempting to go straight to "is this your new device" screenshot below.
Screen Shot 2014-01-04 at 2.37.58 PM.png

I tried to activate the new phone (iphone5s) on Line 1 then deactivate so I could reactivate the (droid) twice, hoping it would then show the iphone5s as a device that was associated with the account so then I would be able to switch it to Line 2 which still has the UDP.

No luck. Hope this makes more sense.

I would return the phone, restore the upgrade and restore the UDP on Line 1 and start over. The reason I would do this is because you can get Verizon to exchange your UDP for 6GB of data for $30/mo AND keep your upgrades on Line 1.

Your way, you are only getting 2GB of data for $30/mo on Line 1.

This has happened to several people now with iPhones. I would trying getting a new SIM from Verizon and then activating the iPhone on Line 2 with the new SIM if you are OK with only 2GB of data on Line 1.

But I would take my advice and start over by returning the phone and getting the upgrade/UDP restored in Line 1. Then trade the UDP on Line 1 for 6GB of data for $30/mo.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

anyone buy from costco recently to confirm that there is no secondary ETF for dropping line or downgrading data? AFAIK, costco, best buy, and VZW are the only retailers where one can do these steps to keep unlimited data. But since we've just rolled into a new year, I thought I'd ask.

Well to answer my own question, Costco does not have any secondary ETF, just the $350 verizon one that would kick in after 14 post activation. So I went ahead and purchased the Moto X tonight (under the guise that it was a gift and upgrade for my son who is on a basic phone) and will be doing the activation online tomorrow morning first thing when I have a bit of time set aside.

Interesting side note -- The rep at MembershipWireless (Costco's vendor in house) looked at my plan and said, "you're due for an upgrade, too, and I can keep you on unlimited data." I told him maybe next time as I had already heavily invested in the white lie that it was for my son for his birthday, etc.. I guess if I have problems doing it tomorrow morning, I'll return the phone, confess it was for me all the time and let them do it (all the while crossing my fingers that they don't screw it up). FWIW, I heard both of the reps tell multiple customers they could make it so their UDP was untouched all in the 15 or so minutes I was standing there. Several months ago I was at a different Costco just window shopping for phones at the time and a different rep also immediately offered up their ability to keep my UDP (asked him how and he said he couldn't tell me) I'm kind of surprised they're so cavalierly offering to assist customers with keeping their UDP. One would think that Verizon would not be too happy.

Will report back on the process in the AM.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Was able to do process without any major hitches. Only thing I had to contact verizon about was that when I put my son's dumb phone back on the plan I could not choose no data but could only choose the $10 75MB plan. Quick chat with VZW support fixed that . Confirmed I still have UDP on now my new Moto X. Thanks to all! (Particularly DayThyme).

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Just wanted to let everyone I GOT EXTREMELY lucky.

I figured I would try talking to a verizon Chat rep before I returned the phone or activated the sim etc. So I contacted one and she was able to move the iphone5s over to my account without any changes to my UDP because the phone was purchased on Line 1 as a upgrade, I also questioned the 6gb for $30 plan and she was able to add the plan to my account and remove the 2gb for $30 because if you upgrade and drop the UDP they are making that offer.

Of course I forgot to also copy the full chat sorry! but I would try talking to a rep if anyone has had my problem and you may luck up like me!

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Code:
1) Obtain a used Verizon basic phone (I got mine from ebay);
2) Log onto Verizon wireless online;
3) Select Add a Device;
4) Add a 32GB iPhone 5s to your cart, pick the 2GB data plan and check out;
5) When the iPhone 5s arrives, activate it on the new line (Line 3) by following the included directions;
6) Put the basic phone on Line 3 by logging into verizon online and selecting Myverizon, switch or activate a device and following the directions (i.e., type in the IMEI of the basic phone, etc.);
7) Put the iPhone 5s on Line 1 by logging into verizon online and selecting Myverizon, switch or activate a device and following the directions (i.e., type in the IMEI of the iPhone 5s, type in the SIM card number of the iPhone 5s, etc.);
8) Transfer Line 1's upgrade to Line 3 and repeat Steps 4-7 but this time get an 16 GB iPhone 5c for your wife and substitute Line 2 for Line 1 in Step 7; and
9) Transfer Line 2's upgrade to Line 3 and repeat Steps 4-6 but this time get an iPhone 5s to sell to recoup the cost of Line 3.

Step 9 is optional. You can instead stop after completing Step 8 and save the unused upgrade on Line 2 to get a new phone next year or whenever you want a new phone.

If the phones you currently have on Line 1 and 2 have the same size SIM cards as the new iPhones, you can accomplish Step 7 by putting the current SIM cards into the new iPhones.

After you are done buying your phones, log onto verizon wireless online and make sure that the data plan dropped off of Line 3. If it has not, block data on Line 3. I was left with a 75MB data plan on my dummy line and had to call to have it removed, but you can also remove it yourself by blocking data on the dummy line.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Not sure why you didnt try above process to keep both UDP's.

Its good that the chat worked for you. It also worked for me, just took a couple of hours and attempts for it to all work out.

Congrats!

I was going to reply and say you could try to call in or chat to get the 6GB plan they are offering. I did the same for my wife's line when I upgraded her line to a smartphone (after upgrading her dumb phone so I could upgrade my unlimited line, then transferring my upgrade to upgrade her to a G2). I elected to call to get the 6GB plan instead of 2GB. The first CS I talked to was adamant that the 6GB/$30 could not be done on my wife's line and spent several minutes explaining how 2GB was plenty. I finally thanked her and hung up and called in again. The second CS did it within a minute after I asked to get the plan applied to her line.

So sometimes calling in doesn't work the first time, if you get stone walled, just call in again and you might get someone who is more willing to do what you are asking for.

Re: Bestbuy Mobile Lets me Keep Unlimited Data?

Okay Guys and Gals,

I did it. I received the LG G2 last night. I had to call Verizon to activate it but I put in my old SIM and the Rep was working on activate it. The rep then told me that I get to keep my unlimited. That was exciting. I kept checking my plan and it still says unlimited. So for those who want a new phone get it from Best Buy, keep your plan and HAVE IT SHIPPED HOME. You will get to keep you unlimited without any problems (at least I did) and get your new phone. Please let me know if there are any questions I'll do my best to answer them. Thanks!

Re: Bestbuy Mobile Lets me Keep Unlimited Data?

So can you be more specific? You put your old (= already in use on your line) SIM in the phone but then you still had to call verizon and get a CS rep to activate the phone?

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I have the old nationwide share 700 plan with 2 smart phones both with unlimited data. How can I keep my unlimited data. I don't have any other lines. Can I open 2 new lines for the upgrade and then buy 2 new iphone 5s phones. With my plan I should be able to add 2 lines for $10, correct? I may have dumb phones lying around which I can then use to switch out when I transfer the iphone 5s to the unlimited lines. Am I making sense? Please help.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hey guys. new here but I figured I would post my experience with this since I've decided to finally retire my droid x2 in favor of the Moto X.

Presently their are 5 phones on our family plan, 3 of which are eligible for upgrade including my smartphone plus 2 feature phones. Couple questions though. So right off I figure I save myself the step of having to transfer an upgrade over to the feature line correct? I can just use the upgrade on the feature line to begin with.

From there when I go through the motobuilder site I have to use the phone number and info from the feature phone I am upgrading, that's a given. Does the phone come preprogrammed or whatever for this phone number? I have to activate when it arrives in my hands I understand this, just curious. From there it is just a matter of activating, deactivating, and transfering information over all in my account on verizonwireless.com? Seems straighforward enough.

Lastly, during the moto maker process does it matter if sign in with my google account info or should I wait until the phone is activated and transfered over to my primary line to do all of that, or does it not matter at all?

As an FYI the following is a convo I had with one of the online verizon people who verified this is still a valid method for utilizing upgrades to recieve subsidized phones and retaining unlimited data plans.

Christopher: at 4:24:07
Hey there! Thank you for visiting Verizon Wireless Sales Chat! My name is Christopher! May I have your name, please?

You: at 4:24:21 My first name is John

Christopher: at 4:25:18
Hello John, how can I help you?

You: at 4:25:45 I suppose I could use some information.

Christopher: at 4:26:49
Alright, I'll be happy to help answer any questions you might have
.

You: at 4:26:55 My phone line is eligible for upgrade as I type this. I currently have the Droid x2 and have decided on the Moto X as my next phone. However, I refuse to give up my unlimited data plan.You: at 4:28:40 So, perusing the online droid forums I have seen verification that by transferring a upgrade from one phone to another I can upgrade a basic feature phone on my plan to the moto x and then move that smart phone back over to my current line. Correct?

Christopher: at 4:29:10
Yes, that is correct.
You: at 4:29:30 All the while keeping my unlimited data that I presently have?

Christopher: at 4:30:36
Yes, that's correct. When upgrading a basic phone to a smart phone, it will only ask to add a data package to that line only, rather than changing the entire plan. After that, you can switch the phone over to the unlimited line without interfering with the unlimited data.

You: at 4:31:26 Ah, ok. that is my understanding of the process. I just then have to cancel the data plan off of the feature phone after I reactivate it.
You: at 4:32:09 To be honest I didnt think it would be that straightforward in discussing this idea with yourself lolYou: at 4:32:22 so thank you for that. I half expected to hear NO it cant be done

Christopher: at 4:33:01
Yes, that's also correct. lol And you're welcome. I actually recommend it for those who have unlimited data but don't want to lose it.

You: at 4:34:30 I've been into my local store twice now to discuss this very thing and of course they said No that's not possible both times, which I expected but still. I figure if I can handle this all online and from and avoid going to the store altogether then that is a good thing

Christopher: at 4:35:25
Yes, it can all be done right online. Even the phone switch.
You: at 4:35:45 Excellent. My next question then
You: at 4:36:39 I would still order the new Moto X through the motobuilder site then correct? I want to opt for the 32gb version.

Christopher: at 4:37:54
I haven't had anyone try this process through the Moto Builder yet, however it should still show the same options during the order.
You: at 4:41:07 I understand. I havent gone through the checkout process but I assume that will prompt me for my account and plan information at some point. At this point I would use the information and phone number of the feature phone that I will be "upgrading" correct? Prior to donig all of this I will have transfered the upgrade from my current smart phone to the feature phone on verizonwireless.comYou: at 4:41:27 of course

Christopher: at 4:41:41
Yes, that is correct.
You: at 4:44:37 Ok. Will the site prompt me to activate the phone then at time of order or will I activate it when it ships to me?

Christopher: at 4:45:37
It will have you activate the phone once it arrives. It should be all setup, so it'll only need to be turned on to activate it.

You: at 4:46:58 Ok. and then it just a matter of changing things around in my account on my verizon page. That seems straighforward enough. I considered buying the phone at retail but I figured if I could make this work its definately a better option

You: at 4:47:25 its worth it to keep the unlimted data imo

Christopher: at 4:48:20
Yes, for those who do still have the unlimited, it's worth going through a few extra steps to keep it.
You: at 4:49:30 Definitely. I've read some of the horror stories people have gone through so I'm trying to get this right the first time around.

Christopher: at 4:51:22
Well, you seem to know the process pretty well based on the questions you asked, so you shouldn't have any trouble.
You: at 4:52:38 I've spent way to many hours reading through this stuff. It would probably be easier still if my x2 had a sim card but it's ancient

Christopher: at 4:57:02
Yeah, that definitely is an older phone.
You: at 5:01:36 yea its def in need of an upgrade

So hopefully that helps some people

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So right off I figure I save myself the step of having to transfer an upgrade over to the feature line correct? I can just use the upgrade on the feature line to begin with.
Yes - there is never any danger of losing unlimited data when you use an upgrade that belongs to a non-unlimited data line.

You then can do whatever you want with that phone, including transferring it to another line, even an UDP line, or selling it. And if you do transfer the phone you bought with the feature phone's upgrade to an UDP line, you will not lose unlimited data on the line. The only thing to keep in mind is if you buy the phone from anywhere other than Verizon, Costco or Best Buy, you cannot drop the data plan on the line you used the upgrade on for 181 days or you will be charged a secondary ETF of $400. Motomaker uses Best Buy's system and there is no secondary ETF if you use motomaker to upgrade a line and then drop the data plan.

I just want to point out that although you don't have to do an upgrade transfer since you have an upgrade available on a feature phone line, you don't have to "waste" the upgrade on your UDP line, either. After you upgrade using the feature phone's line, you can transfer the UDP's upgrade to the feature phone line and get an iPhone 5s with the upgrade and then sell it if you don't want another phone. The reason to do this is because you are paying for that subsidized phone in your monthly bill anyhow, so you might as well use it and sell the iPhone if you don't want another smartphone. Or you can save the upgrade to use for when the Moto X2 comes out :)

Does the phone come preprogrammed or whatever for this phone number?
No, the SIM card will not be associated with the feature phone line until you activate the new phone. However, Verizon will have in their system that that line has a pending order on it from when the upgrade is used until the new phone is activated. Typically this doesn't interfere with the process but some people have had trouble getting the system to stop showing the pending order even after they activate the new phone. This seems to be more of a problem with iPhones than with Android phones. YMMV.

From there it is just a matter of activating, deactivating, and transfering information over all in my account on verizonwireless.com?
Yes, but sometimes the pending orders get "stuck" in the system. Hopefully that won't happen, but if it does, everyone who has posted so far has been able to get that issue resolved by calling customer service. Again, seems to be more of a problem with iPhones for some reason.

Lastly, during the moto maker process does it matter if sign in with my google account info or should I wait until the phone is activated and transfered over to my primary line to do all of that, or does it not matter at all?
Doesn't matter because you can use the same google account on multiple phones at the same time. Right now I have the same google account on 2 phones on 2 different lines. The google accounts don't have anything to do with UDPs.

Thanks for all your help. Please excuse the naive questions but I want to make sure I do it right. My questions/comments are in your reply.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Once I obtain it or use one I have lying around , I need to add it to my account prior to ordering a new smartphone, correct or can I open a new line without adding a phone?
You add a line by logging onto verizon online and selecting add a device. Then you choose any subsidized smartphone you want and choose a 2GB data plan for the added line. Then after you have activated the new smartphone on the added line, you activate a dumbphone on the added line. If the data plan does not automatically drop off of the added line when you activate the dumbphone on the added line, you can block data on the added line. Now the new smartphone is available to be put on your UDP line.

Can this be done online?
Yes, log on and select add a device.

And to your knowledge, my assumption that it is $10 to add to my plan is correct?
Yes + taxes/surcharges/fees, which where I live comes to an additional $13/mo.

Verizon does not offer my plan anymore and so can this still be accomplished online?
Yes, log on and select add a device. Choose whatever new smartphone you want, pick the 2GB data plan for the added line. Then when you get the new phone, activate it on the added line. Make a few phone calls on it, log on to verizon online and check to see that the phone shows as having been activated. Then activate a dumbphone on the added line and block data on the added line if necessary. Now the new smartphone is available to put on an UDP line.

it can be a 16 gb 5s correct?
Yes, my earlier post was to a poster who wanted a 32GB iPhone 5s. You can buy any smartphone you want; he just happened to have wanted a 32GB iPhone 5s.

Here is where I get confused. How can I just buy the device if as per point 6, I still don't have a basic phone on a 3rd line? Remember I currently have only 2 lines on my account.
Whenever you add a line, you get to buy a subsidized phone and that subsidized phone that comes with the added line has nothing at all to do with your other 2 lines or their upgrades.

This can be another 5s correct?
It can be whatever smartphone you want - iPhone, Android, Windows Phone, Blackberry, etc. My comments that you are quoting were to a specific poster who wanted a 32GB iPhone 5s for himself and an iPhone 5c for his wife.

Awesome! Makes total sense now! You rock! Thanks for this valuable service. I appreciate it.

One final question, I then have to keep this extra line for at least 2 years, correct? But it is probably good to keep it for future upgrades or until verizon does away with the loophole.

Once I get the first smartphone, do I have to transfer the upgrade from the second phone to the third line or is that not necessary and can I just order the second phone. Basically what I am asking is that in this entire process, at any time do I have to transfer upgrades?
