[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So my Maxx will be here on Tuesday, what is the correct process for the activation? Simply turn on the phone and follow the process or enter the device ID # via the website?
If you ordered it using the basic line's upgrade, simply turn it on and do whatever the instructions tell you to do to activate it. Then once it is active on the basic line, put the basic phone back on the basic line, drop the basic line's data plan if it doesn't drop off by itself, shut off the phone that is currently on your UDP line and then reactivate the new phone on your UDP line online.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I have a Driod Razr and would like to upgrade to the Droid Maxx. The sim cards for these two phones are the same right?
it doesn't matter if they are the same since you have 2 tiered lines you can use for upgrade transfers.

I have a family plan with 4 smartphones, 2 with UDP and 2 with tiered plans.
Awesome, you can do this process no problem then by using the 2 tiered lines to transfer the UDP line's upgrades to.

My phone is the only one with upgrade available right now.
So assuming your line is an UDP line, you transfer your UDP line's upgrade to 1 of your 2 tiered data plan lines and purchase the new Droid Maxx on the tiered line. Then you activate the new Droid Maxx on the tiered line, then switch the new Droid Maxx to your UDP line.

Is their any way to upgrade my phone with out having to add a new dummy line and not lose my UDP?
You don't need to add a new dummy line because you have 2 tiered lines to transfer your UDP lines' upgrades to.

Just check with whichever retailer you buy from to make sure there is no fee if you move the new Droid Maxx to a different line. There should not be since you are not downgrading the data plan on the tiered data line.

For sure there is no problem if you buy from Best Buy, Verizon or Costco.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Since I had to pick a data plan I chose the 2gb data plan for the basic line...when will that show up on my account so I can cancel it? After I activate the new phone on the basic line?
yes, it shows up after you activate the new phone on the basic line.

Can I face issues if I never activate the phone at all on the basic line and just activate it on my unlimited data line?
This was covered before. Some people say you can do this no problem since you are using the basic line's upgrade. But why risk it? I have never done it that way nor would I risk it so I can't tell you if it works or not. None of us actively posting here have done it that way so we can't reassure you that it will work.

It may work, it may not work, I can't tell you from personal experience. So my advice is to not do it that way. Activate first on the basic line. It does not take long to switch the new phone to the UDP line after first activating it on the basic line. That I can tell you WILL work because I have done it that way.

Re: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price.

Hi everyone, I'm new to this site and I normally don't do much posting but I wanted to say I'm really nervous about trying this method. I do see that bestbuy.com is the only system that doesn't catch the UDP and allows you to keep the plan. I tried several sites to see what would happen but each one catches it and forwards me to a rep by chat. The rep then tries to make me switch data plans, which just isn't happening. I will do without a phone until data plans make sense again, if that's the case. I don't mind paying for limits but the limit prices and $40/month per line cost on major carries is absolutely absurd! Anyway, I'm just asking for someone to say that this still works. In advance, I completely understand I must use the old SIM and just turn the phone on with it in it. Also, I did order the Note 3 and am currently waiting for it to arrive. I'm not going to attempt activation until someone lets me know that this is still working.

Many thaks for the quick reply! I will let everyone know if mine works when I receive it and if anyone has issues in the meantime please post it before anyone else has to begin a figth with verizon. Hopefully all goes well and they don't stop this for awhile.

The Motorola Moto Maker site uses the best buy system, so it works through Moto Maker, too.

On another site, someone just did this today and said it worked for them using Moto Maker.

Remember to not turn on the phone until you remove the SIM card it ships with. They are shipping them with the SIM cards in them. Do not turn it on until you get that SIM card out of the phone.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Can I get some advice..

I have lines.

Line A: Mine. UDP. Upgrade Eligible
Line B: 2GB cap. Not Eligible
Line C: 2GB cap. Not eligible.
Line D: No Data. LG Octane Phone. Upgrade Eligible
Line E: No Date. Envy phone. Not Eligble.

I want a Moto X, Custom with wooden back. I logged into Verizon Wireless, hit upgrade device on my phone (A), hit transfer and transferred it to Line E. Hit next, takes you to the phones to buy. Hit Design Yours for the Moto X. It took me to the Moto Maker site. I built my phone and went to check out and it's showing Line A and Line D as eligible when they check. It's not showing the transfer. I assume this is because when you do it on Verizon it never officially changes it because you are in the process of purchasing a phone. So.. I called Verizon.

I explained I wanted to transfer upgrades and purchase a custom Moto X. I asked if I could transfer the upgrades over the phone and then go online and purchase. She said no, she isn't able to do that (something about contracts). But she said that I should be able to choose Line A like it says that has the UDP and purchase it through there. That even if it has me choose a new data plan that it never actually become active until I activate the phone when I receive it. That i could then activate it on Line E and it shouldn't touch my unlimited. I get nervous explaining to them why I am doing so I didn't say "Well, then I would deactivate it, then cancel the data plan, then transfer it back to line A." But she told me that even if something tripped my Unlimited off that they have 14 days that they can change it back.

Does this seem right? That I could order it through the upgrade with Line A that has UDP, or is that where I would mess something up and there would be no returning and that lady is just wrong. I'm afraid to do that.

Should I call again and try my luck with another person and what should I say?

Anybody do the transfer, and custom Moto X thing?

Re: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price.

Just checking in. I received my Note 3 last night and everything worked like a charm. Just pop in the old sim card and thats it. I just ordered the phone for my wife this morning. I verified my account again and it shows my UDP and new contract date of 3/1/2016. I will post picture of my account soon.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Thanks for your response SmithlandCart.

How will I activate the new phone on my line being that the Droid Maxx sim card is different than the Droid Razr? It seems too easy to be true if all I have to do is transfer the upgrade to a different line and then just activate it on my line.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

How will I activate the new phone on my line being that the Droid Maxx sim card is different than the Droid Razr?
After you activate the Droid Maxx on your tiered line, you turn it off and turn off the Droid Razr that is currently on your UDP line. Then log into Verizon online. Select My Verizon activate or switch device. Then select the tiered data line that currently has the Droid Maxx on it. Then go through the process of reactivating the phone that was originally on the tiered data line. You will be able to select it from a list since that phone has been on your account before and you will need to read the SIM card number off of the SIM card that is in that device. Follow the directions to get the original tiered line's phone back on the tiered line.

Once that is done, the Droid Maxx is available to be put on the UDP line. So select MyVerizon activate or switch device and select the UDP line showing the Razr on it. Go through the same steps to put the Droid Maxx on your UDP line. This includes typing in the SIM card number for the SIM card that is in the Droid Maxx so you will have to pop it out of the device and read it.

It seems too easy to be true if all I have to do is transfer the upgrade to a different line and then just activate it on my line.
well it's true. I have done it twice and kept my UDP on both my UDP lines.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Have any of you who successfully completed the alternate upgrade... checked the UDP line on MyVerizon by clicking on activate switch device after you transferred the new phone to the UDP line?

Here is my situation
Line A UDP upgrade eligible
Line B capped data not eligible
transferred Line A upgrade to Line B and ordered new smartphone
received and activated new phone on Line B
put old phone back on Line B after 24 hours via MyVerizon using Activate Switch device
attempted to put new phone on Line A using MyVerizon Activate switch device... no go... prompted on Line A to accept the order that I had accepted 24 hours earlier on Line B!
put sim card from old Line A phone in new smartphone.... turned on, have LTE service, about phone showing correct Line A number.
Line B working as expected.

One week later My Verizon shows upgrade date for Line A pushed out 2 years as expected.... also still shows unlimited data
but.... if I go to Activate switch device for Line A I am still prompted to accept the order!
Has anyone had this happen?

That's correct. There is no way to transfer an upgrade using Moto Maker. So you should use line D's upgrade to get your Moto Maker phone, select a data plan, activate the Moto X on Line D, put the LG Octane back on Line D, drop the data plan on Line D and then put the Moto X on Line A. And then when Line D is ready for an upgrade, transfer Line A's upgrade to Line D through Verizon and get a phone offered by Verizon. Best Buy and Costco reps know how to do upgrade transfers, too and there is no secondary ETF for dropping a data plan with Verizon, BB or Costco or Moto Maker.

I assume this is because when you do it on Verizon it never officially changes it because you are in the process of purchasing a phone.
Correct. The transfer does not "stick".

So.. I called Verizon.
Which was a complete waste of your time.

I explained I wanted to transfer upgrades and purchase a custom Moto X. I asked if I could transfer the upgrades over the phone and then go online and purchase. As far as I know this will not work. You will be forced to pick a new data plan to progress to check out on Line A. However, if you are brave go ahead and try it. It makes no sense to even try this given that you have an upgrade available on Line D.

I get nervous explaining to them why I am doing so I didn't say "Well, then I would deactivate it, then cancel the data plan, then transfer it back to line A." But she told me that even if something tripped my Unlimited off that they have 14 days that they can change it back.
That is correct, they CAN. But they don't have to. You have to get the right person on the phone and sometimes you do and sometimes you don't.

Does this seem right? That I could order it through the upgrade with Line A that has UDP, or is that where I would mess something up and there would be no returning and that lady is just wrong. I'm afraid to do that.
When you go to order it through Verizon with the upgrade on Line A, you will be FORCED to pick a new data plan or it will not let you check out.

Should I call again and try my luck with another person and what should I say?
No, it will be a complete waste of your time.

Anybody do the transfer, and custom Moto X thing?
Again, you can't transfer an upgrade through Moto Maker. And my advice to you is to use Line D's upgrade as I explained in my previous post. That is the safest thing to do.

But if you are going to be stubborn and refuse to take the safest route, there is one other possibility for you, but it is not the safest route. Since Moto Maker is processed thru the best buy system, it has the same glitch that the best buy system has in that it will let you order a custom Moto X and select keep existing plan even though you have an UDP on the line. So unlike with Verizon, ordering through Moto Maker, you will not be forced to pick a new plan, rather you will be allowed to select keep existing plan.

So you could try ordering on Line A and select keep existing plan. Then when you get the Moto X, do NOT turn it on. First remove the SIM card that is in it. Then replace it with the SIM card that is in the phone currently on Line A. Then and ONLY THEN, turn on the Moto X and activate it. People have been able to keep their UDP by doing that. If your current phone has a larger SIM card than the nano SIM cards the Moto X ships with, you will have to cut it down. Also, the Moto X's use the secure element NFC chip in the nano SIM cards for Isis wallet, so if you want that, you would need a new SIM card, but don't even think about asking for one until you have activated the phone using your old SIM card.

Again, I would not go this route when you have the option of just using Line D's upgrade now and then transferring an upgrade from Line A to Line D when Line D is ready for an upgrade.

Yes, it happens quite frequently especially with iPhones. You have to call and have them clear the pending activation from the line or just wait and it may clear on its own. As long as this is not a problem for you, I would just sit tight and see if it clears on its own. If it doesn't and you need to activate or switch a device and it becomes a problem, at that time get it cleared off of the line.

Did you get an iPhone by any chance?

OK, well it does happen sometimes. If it doesn't bother you, leave it be. But if you need to activate or switch a device, then Verizon will have to clear it for you if it doesn't clear on its own.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Can anyone recommend a reputable place to buy a Verizon 4G nano sim card? I can't use the sim card from one of my existing phones with UDP (old phone) and my Verizon store won't give me one.

Cutting the current card won't work. The phone is and Incredible 2 and the sim card in it is only used for global capabilities.

So....where is a good place to but a new, retail, unused nano sim?

Thanks
