[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hi,

I read through the thread and am pretty confident with the necessary steps to keep my UDP with transfer upgrade, but still was unclear about the SIM card portion and was looking for some confirmation. Below is my situation and outlined plan. Please correct me if any part of the below is wrong.

Line A: iPhone 4S - UDP - Upgrade available
Line B: Samsung S4 - 2GB data plan

Goal: Upgrade the iPhone 4S on Line A to an iPhone 5S

Steps:
1) Transfer upgrade from Line A to Line B
2) Use upgrade on Line B to get an iPhone 5S
3) Activate iPhone 5S on Line B
4) Re-activate Samsung S4 on Line B
5) Activate iPhone 5S on Line A

My questions are:
1) Is the above outlined plan correct to keep Line A's UDP?
2) The iPhone 4S is 3G and the iPhone 5S is 4G. Will there be an issue when I activate the iPhone 5S on my old iPhone 4S line? If so, what am I supposed to do to resolve this?

Thank you! Any help is much appreciated!

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I just picked up my new Droid Maxx phone today that I got through an upgrade transferred from a UDP line to a tiered plan line. Activated it around 1pm, I can not switch the new phone back to my UDP line using the activate or switch devices page. If I select the new phone on the tiered plan I am given a notice that the phone still needs to be activated and that If I am having problems with this I can call verizon on the issue. If I select the phone with the UDP I am given a notice saying that this request can not be processed at this time, please try again later.

Anyone have this issue?

I chatted with someone from Verizon about this but didn't tell him that I want the new phone on the UDP line. I told him that I wanted to use the old phone from the tiered line, and he kept trying to help me by switching devices for me but thats not what I really want to do. He also told me that I can file a report on this but it might take a few days to correct it that way. Told him I'd wait it out and see if the website updates soon.

Sometimes the upgrade gets delayed. Try calling Verizon again and have them push it through manually. I saw the same message about activation required probably a few weeks after getting my phone. I had to call Verizon and they fixed it somehow.

But if you just want to move the phone, just get the sim from the old device and put it into the new phone. Although the Maxx I believe uses a Nano sim, so you may have to cut the sim.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

If you're still in the market for a G2, BB has them back in stock for shipping.

Thanks, but I ended up buying from Costco. WAAAYYYY cheaper than from BB, since they have it $50 less than BB and they only charge tax off the wholesale price... so tax was only $12, whereas BB charges tax on the retail price which would be $50+.
See my post from a week before you posted:

Just bought the LG G2 last night, for $49.99 + $12 tax. Costco only charges tax on the wholesale price, whereas through Best Buy or Verizon the sales tax is charged based on the retail price... which would have been closer to $50 instead of $12. There's also the $30 upgrade fee which will show up on the bill.

Anyways, my UDP should still be intact, and we used my line's upgrade. But I have a family plan with several dumb phone lines (no upgrade eligible) so we took advantage of that.
Where's more-or-less what they do, and this is actually a standard practice even through Verizon (if you come in contact with the right rep):
1) They transfer the upgrade from my UDP line to a dumb phone line.
2) They activate the new phone through their system with a dummy SIM (not my old one) on the dumb phone line.
3) They re-activate the dumb phone on the dumb phone line (they don't actually need the dumb phone to do this, but that line will be unavailable to the dumb phone for about 5mins).
4) They used my old SIM card to activate the new phone on my UDP line.

So in the end the net result is like the result of the steps in this Best Buy thread: I use my upgrade to get a new phone on my UDP line, get a 2-year contract extension, and keep UDP. So far so good.

And my 14-day return window ends tomorrow. So far my account is still showing unlimited data and I've used about 12.5 GB with 8 more days left on this billing cycle.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hi all,

I'm a noob here and found the site through the discussion of getting a subsidized phone and keeping UDP. I have a similar, but slightly different situation to some of the ones just mentioned, and I want to see if anyone can fill me in.

Line A: Razr Maxx - UDP - Upgrade Available
Line B: Razr Maxx - 4GB for $30 (double data promo) - Upgrade Available

I'd like to upgrade phones on both lines without adding another line. Our phones are both still OK, but starting to slow down a bit. From what I've seen, the $4GB for $30 is eligible for upgrades without giving up that plan. Is that true? If so, am I able to do the following?

1) Upgrade Line B to a MotoX (and activate on line B)
2) Transfer the MotoX to Line A (and keep UDP)
3) Reactivate Razr Maxx on Line B
4) Transfer Upgrade from Line A to Line B
5) Upgrade Line B to whatever phone we choose (Droid Mini for example)

Is this possible without losing UDP? If so, I may go this route to avoid cutting down my SIM card to fit the Moto X (or risk some other screw up) on Line A. Otherwise I may go the Best Buy/Moto Maker route to get a Moto X for line A and just upgrade Line B straight to a new phone. One advantage that way is that the X is free through Best Buy and $49 through Moto Maker or Verizon. Thanks in advance for any info you can provide.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

The method you mentioned by transferring upgrade would retain unlimited

Hi! Can anybody help with my questions above?

Thanks!

What happened to SmithlandCart? Why was he banned?

We do not publicly discuss administrative actions like bans and infractions.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

My GS4 finally arrived today after getting stuck in bad weather for a couple days. Going to swap cards and give it a shot when I get home from work.
Should the Razr Maxx SIM card be a direct swap, or will it need to be cut?

Thank you

Direct swap

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I just wanted to post that I succeeded in this process for a second time on my family share plan. I will outline details below:

Line 1) Unlimited Data Droid Bionic
Line 2) Basic Phone

There are more lines on this plan, but for the sake of keeping things simple I am not going to list them all out.

Step 1) Transferred upgrade from Line 1 to Line 2
Step 2) Upgraded basic phone to LG G2
Step 3) Once G2 came in the mail, I tuned off basic phone.
Step 4) Turn on G2 and go through activation and made two test calls
Step 5) Turn off G2 and reactivated basic phone on Line 1.
Step 6) Transferred Droid Bionic SIM card to new microsim
Step 7) Put transferred microsim card that used to be tied to bionic in the G2 (while it was still off)
Step 8) Turn on G2 and now have a wonderful phone with unlimited data preserved.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hey guys, thanks for all of your epic work here. I am hoping I can join the ranks of saving UDP from the grasp of Verizon.

I'd appreciate specific help with my situation, as it seems a bit confusing to me.

My current plan: NATIONWIDE TLK&TXT SHARE 2000

My lines:
UDP Line 1. iPhone 4S - Unlimited Data
UDP Line 2. iPhone 4S - Unlimited Data

BOTH lines are available for upgrade.

This is what I think I have to do, but someone please correct me if I am wrong.

1. Add two new BASIC lines to my current account, and buy two crappy phones at the verizon subsidized price. [What crappy phones do I buy, do they need to have SIMS?]
2. Activate the crappy phones on the crappy lines. Mess around on phones, send data etc.
3. Next, transfer my upgrade from UDP Line #1 to buy an iPhone 5S on Crappy Line #1.
4. Then use my upgrade on UDP Line #2 to buy an iPhone 5S on Crappy Line #2.
5. Deactivate crappy phones 1 & 2 on crappy lines 1 & 2.
6. Activate the new Iphone 5s on crappy lines 1 & 2.
7. Mess around on crappy lines with good phones.
8. Deactivate iphones on crappy lines [how?], put crappy phones back on crappy lines. Cap data. Never use those burner phones again.
9. Activate iphone 5s on udp #1, activate iphone 5s on udp line 2.
10. Enjoy the UDP forever.

Is this how it needs to be done?

Do I add the lines manually myself on Verizon wireless.com?

Thank you guys, when this is all over I will post pics of my new phones with 100GBs of Data used. :D

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

You don't need to add two lines...you only need one basic phone (pick a free one to minimize cost) then transfer the first iPhone upgrade to the basic line to buy the 5s, once you receive the phone activate on the basic line, reactivate the dumb phone then transfer the new iPhone to the unlimited line that donated the upgrade...repeat the same steps for the second iphone

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Just to let everyone know, I tried this today and it didn't work. Here's what I did:

I have the GNex right now with unlimited data and an upgrade available. I ordered the note 3 from Best buy's web site, following all the instructions posted in this thread, selecting keep existing plan. That all went smooth and I received an email that my order was being processed. About 30 minutes later, I received an email stating that there was a problem and I should call. I decided to call to see what the problem was, keeping in mind that I would not let the Best Buy representative make any changes to my Verizon account. I called and the representative said they needed to talk with Verizon to find out what the problem was. I explained that I did not want this unless she would guarantee that I would not lose unlimited data. She said she would just ask the Verizon rep what the problem was and not make any changes to my account before consulting with me. So I let her do that. She came back and explained that yes, it kicked back from Verizon because I had unlimited data and had not selected a new plan, so I canceled the order with no changes to my account.

So, it looks like Best Buy might have fixed this loophole in there system, sorry to say.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Or..... Buy a dumb phone online and then you have 3 upgrades.... You can save one or buy an iPhone and sell it online and profit.

The same thing happened to my bro. Post #335. He's going to try again once the billing cycle is over.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

I got my moto X on 3/12 cut down the sim card from my GS4 and pluged it in and everything worked! Still have UDP with the motoX showing in my account.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

It does look like BB might have done something to their system. I never got around to ordering the iPhone for my wife since I was working to resolve another situation with them first. I went to order it tonight and got the message below, which is weird, since I was able to go through the same process by doing all of the same steps. They might have done something behind the scenes to put an end to this....

We’re sorry. This item is not available. (You obviously have excellent taste!)
