[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

It does look like BB might have done something to their system. I never got around to ordering the iPhone for my wife since I was working to resolve another situation with them first. I went to order it tonight and got the message below, which is weird, since I was able to go through the same process by doing all of the same steps. They might have done something behind the scenes to put an end to this....

Try clearing the cache. .I got the same message before I ordered my phone.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Thanks, but I ended up buying from Costco. WAAAYYYY cheaper than from BB, since they have it $50 less than BB and they only charge tax off the wholesale price... so tax was only $12, whereas BB charges tax on the retail price which would be $50+.

I don't know where you get this idea that BB would charge tax on full retail price of the phone. I ordered G2 for $49 and was only charged sales tax on $49. Also, VZ never charged me any upgrade $30 or $35 fee. I have done this a while back. Please see top post on page 6
Item Total$52.99
Product Price: $49.99
Shipping: $0.00
Sales Tax & Fees:$3.00

This may be a state-based sort of thing. I didn't go through the whole checkout process through BB, but up to the shopping cart point on BB's website I see these numbers:
Product Total: $99.99
Estimated Sales Tax: $47.42

The current sales tax rate where I live (California) is around 8% (differs from county-to-county). This means the retail price (which the tax is charged off of) is near $550-600.

I'm not sure when the Upgrade Fee is charged to the VZW bill but as I understand it, this should be added to the next billing cycle. Since you ordered your phone almost a month and a half ago, maybe it hasn't been added to your bill yet. Even in the shopping cart checkout page on BB it shows there would be a one-time Upgrade Fee Charge of $35.00 under "Plan Services".

If you don't believe me on these things, would you like to see screenshots? I have no reason to make up any of this...

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

It's okay, it might be a state thing as you said. Lucky me I guess! I have paid 2 bills after upgrade, and the new monthly cycle still don't show any upgrade fee. Awsome!! :)

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hey guys, thanks for all of your epic work here. I am hoping I can join the ranks of saving UDP from the grasp of Verizon.

I'd appreciate specific help with my situation, as it seems a bit confusing to me.

My current plan: NATIONWIDE TLK&TXT SHARE 2000

My lines:
UDP Line 1. iPhone 4S - Unlimited Data
UDP Line 2. iPhone 4S - Unlimited Data

BOTH lines are available for upgrade.

This is what I think I have to do, but someone please correct me if I am wrong.

1. Add two new BASIC lines to my current account, and buy two crappy phones at the verizon subsidized price. [What crappy phones do I buy, do they need to have SIMS?]
2. Activate the crappy phones on the crappy lines. Mess around on phones, send data etc.
3. Next, transfer my upgrade from UDP Line #1 to buy an iPhone 5S on Crappy Line #1.
4. Then use my upgrade on UDP Line #2 to buy an iPhone 5S on Crappy Line #2.
5. Deactivate crappy phones 1 & 2 on crappy lines 1 & 2.
6. Activate the new Iphone 5s on crappy lines 1 & 2.
7. Mess around on crappy lines with good phones.
8. Deactivate iphones on crappy lines [how?], put crappy phones back on crappy lines. Cap data. Never use those burner phones again.
9. Activate iphone 5s on udp #1, activate iphone 5s on udp line 2.
10. Enjoy the UDP forever.

Is this how it needs to be done?

Do I add the lines manually myself on Verizon wireless.com?

Thank you guys, when this is all over I will post pics of my new phones with 100GBs of Data used. :D

Add a third line with a new subsidized smartphone. Get a cheap dumb phone on ebay for $50 and put that on the new line freeing the new smartphone. Transfer and upgrade the two available upgrades to this third line now with the dumb phone. Do this twice. You will now have 3 new smartphones. You can activate two on your original unlimited lines and you can sell the third phone to recover the cost of the dumb phone and the $10/mo you will pay for the basic line. You can give the basic phone to in-laws or parents who just want a basic phone to use.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Is it really necessary to first activate the phone with the line ordered with, to which I transferred the upgrade to from my UDP line, and then activate with the UDP line? Will I still be able to choose insurance and protection? Im going from a GS3 to a GS4- can I just put my sim card into the GS4?

Not really. I just did that last week. Transferred upgrade to basic phone line. Activated new phone on UDP line. Still have unlimited, still have Total equipment coverage intact. Saves trouble of the basic phone line getting interrupted since my in-laws have it and I don't have it in my possession. If I had activated it on dumb phone line first I would have had to talk them through reactivating the dumb phone. Also avoids the problem of the SIM getting attached to the basic phone line and won't let you activate on the UDP line.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

You wouldn't have to talk them through it.... You can activate it online and put their phone back on it as well. You don't need the phone to do it.

You have to do a *228 option #1. Believe me they can't do that.

No you don't.... You can do it online... All they have to do is shut it off.... Then turn it back on when you tell them.

I don't know, maybe it's phone dependent. I did that before on my wife's basic phone while she was traveling and it went out. Wouldn't come back after reboot. Only after reactivating *228 1.

Eh.... Maybe. I have done it several times however.

Better to be safe than sorry.

Ill give it a go then. Im sure it wont affect it, we have another UDP line that upgraded to an S4 from a 3G phone, all we had to do was activate it online with the new MEID and SIM number and everything stayed the same.

Theres no problem with using my same SIM card correct? I dont have to use the one they provided?

As long as the SIM is the same type and fits. When I did it I upgraded a Galaxy Nexus to a Note 3. I went online to activate it and entered the new MEID and in the end it just told me to take the SIM from the Nexus and put it in the Note 3. I'm suspecting I might have been able to avoid the whole online MEID thing and just put the SIM from the Nexus into the new Note 3.

It's definitely a state thing. The tax agency in California has ruled that sales tax MUST be paid on the full retail cost of a phone. Their (rather creative) interpretation is that the actual product you are buying is (phone + contract), and that you are actually paying the balance of the full retail cost of the phone over the term of the contract, and thus owe sales tax on the full retail cost. Of course, the fact that you don't pay any less if you bring your own phone off contract doesn't seem to make any difference to them, but that's the government....

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Have a dumb phone on one of my lines that can be upgradeed. Im on family unlimited data plan with three other lines. I want to keep unlimited of course. My wife ( dumb phone holder) wants to get a free apple 4s phone. What should I do to keep my unlimited plan. Thank you

You won't be able to change a dumb phone line to an unlimited data line. You can use that line to get a new smartphone bit the phone would then have to be moved to another line with unlimited data because if it stays on what was originally the dumb line it will be on measured data.

They like to stick it to us in California >.<

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

That is correct, but you can upgrade the other lines without effecting your line.
