[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

One thing I found interesting.. since Motomaker uses the Best Buy checkout system it activated my $50 gift card promo. I got the email from Best Buy to follow their link and enter the code for my gift card. I haven't received the Moto X yet so I'm going to wait for that before I even attempt getting the card. Just thought it was something that you guys might like to know is an option if you signed up for the promo.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So a slightly different case and question. I have 3 smartphones with upgrades available and 2 basic phones that don't have upgrades which are all on the NATIONWIDE TALK & TEXT FS 700 plan. One of my smartphones is an iPhone 4 with "unlimited data" which I want to keep and change the smartphone to a droid device.

Since I had two existing smartphone lines with upgrades available, rather than transferring my available iPhone 4 upgrade to a basic phone and adding data plan, etc., I just upgraded one of the smartphones to the new phone I want ultimately to transfer in place of the iPhone 4 on the unlimited data line.

So if I have this all correct, once the new droid phone comes in I will activate it on the original smartphone line then subsequently deactivate it going back to original smartphone and then lastly activating it on the existing iPhone 4 line with unlimited data? As I understand it from reading the thread this should work fine although may have to call VZW customer service but want to ensure I will still have the upgrade available that is on the previous iPhone line that the new droid smartphone will be transferred? I would appreciate confirmation on this and/or provide any input for anything I might have overlooked.

Yes, you can do that but you will be losing one of your unlimited data because you upgraded it without transferring it. You will still have data on the second unlimited line you move your phone to and an available upgrade. The better way of doing it would to have transferred the upgrade to one of your basic phones and then order the smartphone on the basic line. Then when it comes just activate it on one of your unlimited lines and the data will never go into effect on the basic phone line. You could transfer both upgrades to the basic phone lines one at a time and then you'd have preserved both your unlimited lines.

I upgraded one of the smartphones line which didn't have unlimited data to the new Droid phone so the upgrade was used there. After I activate, deactivate, add back original smartphone to that line and then activate the new Droid phone on the smartphone line with unlimited data I'm under the impression that I will keep the available upgrade on that line which I can transfer later to another line if I choose?

Yes you are correct you can do that. However in my experience it is not actually necessary to take the step of activating, then deactivating on the line you ordered the phone on. You can just activate it on the unlimited line. If the phones use the same SIM card you can just pop the SIM from your unlimited line in the new smartphone (if they are size compatible) and you're good to go.

Thanks dss2000 for taking the time to respond. You bring up an interesting question though as I ultimately plan to transfer it to an iPhone 4 line on VZW. I don't think there is a SIM card in that so I guess I will have to get VZW CS rep involved in the transfer/activation?

If on your existing Verizon unlimited line you have an iPhone 4 without a SIM you can go online via your Verizon account to activate the new phone on that line. In the process it will ask for the serial number on the SIM you received and the MEID of the phone. I find it best to try to avoid involving Verizon CSR's especially the ones in the store as much as possible as they will give you misinformation and try to scare you. I suspect they must get a commission for every unlimited line they discontinue from the stories I've read on this thread.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

My Verizon online doesn't show the "Transfer Upgrade" option on my unlimited data line like it used to. A rep said that loophole had been closed. Can anyone confirm?

I looked on my account just now and still shows my available upgrade available to transfer to other phones. Check the upgrade dates on your phones to see when they are available for upgrade. Several months ago they changed the upgrade date from 20 months to 24 months. If your upgrade date fell in that period it might have gotten pushed out an additional 4 months so you no longer have that transfer upgrade available yet.

Re: Bestbuy Mobile Lets me Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon?

First of all, I want to thank everyone, for all the useful info..
Here’s my situation.

Going from a regular Droid udp sim to an Iphone 5s.
Ordered the 5s from Best Buy.
Did not power on, took out the 5s sim.
Ordered a sim cutter, cut the udp sim to size, so it would fit the 5s tray, inserted in 5s and powered on.

Set it up, everything seemed fine, here’s the problem:

Udp is still active,
Can make and receive calls

But cannot text from my actual phone #,
or receive texts from non-apple users.

Can only send and receive imessages from my gmail account,
And that’s only to and from other Apple users.

If changes need to be made,
I do have a sim adapter, that allows the cut sim to be put back in the original phone.

Please help !

Thanks for the reply...

I thought of calling Verizon, but I want to do that as a last resort, just in case they put me on tiered.

Has anyone else come across this, or any other suggestions?

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

It seems the SIM card method still works. Got my Moto X last night from Motomaker, cut my microSIM down to a nanoSIM, put it in the X, powered on and was good to go.

Now to claim my Best Buy gift card. :)

edit: Forgot to mention that the Verizon site shows my Moto X as activated and my UDP still in place.

You could try to reset the iPhone's settings and have it re-activate again and see. It could also be the SIM card, perhaps.

The 5S came with a SIM card installed, right? I would still call them up, or maybe call the store, and ask them to activate a new SIM for you on the iPhone. Just tell them that you stopped by a store, but didn't have time for them to go through the entire process, but they gave you a replacement SIM.

Alternatively, try putting it back into the old device and have that active on the line. Then go online and click on Switch Device, and it should alert you that the SIM sizes do not match. Then just say that you already have a nano-SIM, and then you should be able to punch in the nano-SIM number.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hello! I started reading the posts from January, but didn't feel like reading over 2000 posts, but was wondering if anyone could help? So here's the quick story:

My wife and I NEED new phones we currently have a Droid 2 Global and a Droid X. We have the nationwide Talk share 700 plan w/ unlimited data on both lines, 700 mins & 500 messages ( old plan right) Anyway were paying $160 a month. We really don't want to go any higher.

I tried adding a dummy line online but it says we both need to upgrade to a 1000 messages for our lines, with a total increase of $20 a month, plus the new line would be an additional $30 a month....Right? Well at the checkout it's saying it's going to be $205 a month.

Is there a working method or something we can do to keep unlimited data and not pay that much of an increase?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I've been trying to figure this all out for about a week now.

I had the exact same problem going from a Droid Bionic to an iPhone 5s with a sim card that I cut. Troubleshooting questions: 1) In the top left corner of the phone, does it say 'Verizon', or just have the signal and Wifi indicator; and 2) if you go to 'Settings'-->'General'-->'About', what does it say next to 'Network'? If it doesn't say Verizon in the corner, and it says the network is Unavailable, you just need to get a new sim card from Verizon. You might want to order a new sim from Verizon's website, b/c the manager gave me a little bit of a hard time in the store and said I shouldn't have cut my existing sim card, but he ended up giving me a new one and it fixed the problem right away and made no changes to my unlimited data plan.

I'm not really familiar with your plan. I have the 1400 Nationwide Talk & Text (unlimited data and text) and it costs me $10/mo to have a basic phone that I use to transfer upgrades through that my in-laws use. $30 a month for a basic phone sounds like too much though.

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

I'll share a little story with you all since this post gave me the idea... I upgraded my device through Best Buy's site. I took screenshots using a browser plugin for Firefox called FireShot. I upgraded two phones. Got Samsung Galaxy S4's.
What I did.... When my phone upgraded and Verizon changed my data package to 2 GIG, I called them. I got tossed around a bit... Finally I got their corporate relations office in New Jersey, I believe and was assigned to a guy named Chris. I had emailed my screenshots to them as the Best Buy site specifically tells the buyer their data package would remain unchanged.
After about a month and several phone calls, TODAY THEY RESTORED MY UNLIMITED DATA PACKAGE!!
I'll share one other thing... My wife upgraded her phone at the same time and we had her place her old SIM card out of her previous phone and activated the phone and NO CHANGE to her data package. My daughter did the same thing about a month later and it worked. So, I have three subsidized phones all with unlimited data packages.
This works if you are patient.
Thanks for the inspiration.
;)

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

I made an account to share with you. I ordered an LG G2 through BB online today and the order got stopped and had me call BB. The rep said that I had to change my data plan to continue on. I cancelled the order over the phone. Possible caveat that caused the call is that my billing and shipping address was not the same. I’ve known merchants to call and verify that the information was entered correctly before they charge the credit card.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Received my LG G2 today, swapped sim cards and everything seems to be good. I also destroyed the sim card that the phone came with as it was a threat to my UDP. Now I have decide what to but with the best buy gift card and whether to keep phone or sell.

I was very hesitant and suspicious to do this but the free lg g2 was to good of a deal to pass.

So I would like to say thank you to all who have contributed to this post.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

My husband & I were about to order the new HTC since its BOGO. Has anyone tried it that still had the Micro? Thinking about ordering the cutter but if the loophole is dead, that sucks. I have the Maxx still. Not only is it a POS, I dropped it & the screen cracked... lol
