[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Still trying to figure out how to get an upgrade for my UDP that has no sim card without having to buy an unlocked phone...thanks. Gonna repost.

I have an unlocked iphone 4S that I'm going to trade in for the iphone 6 for UserA
UserA is on basic line, no data, upgrade available
UserB has UDP but smartphone with no sim card, no upgrade available
UserC has TDP but upgrade available
User D has UDP and upgrade available. I'm probably going to buy an unlocked moto x though so don't think I need it.
First off regular unlocked phones do not work on Verizon. The phone has to be a Verizon branded device. It just so happens their devices are unlocked and can be used on other carriers.

You are going to want to get a 4G phone on the destination line before you upgrade. You can purchase a used device or maybe borrow a device from a friend.

Once you get a SIM active on the destination line you can order the new phone.

If doing the best buy method order the phone directly. This is only for delivery not in store. When you get the new phone immediately remove the sim and destroy it. Never turn the phone on with that sim. Put the SIM from the line you want the phone on in the phone. You may have to cut it to fit.

Or you can transfer the upgrade from the unlimited to the tiered line. When you get the Phone again discard sim. Put the SIM from the line you want the phone on in the phone.

The iphone was previously used on Verizon, if that helps

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I did the BB thing for the M7, the did the same thing at VZW for the M8. I guess I'll see what happens next time I upgrade a phone.
I am going to do the dumbphone upgrade through Best Buy for the Note 4. Hopefully it will ship right away.

When I upgraded to the M8, the reps at the store tried really hard to talk me into an edge plan, and kept trying to avoid my question on how that affects my UDP.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Well, I bought the 6+ with Apple on my unlimited data line. It took my upgrade away, but unlimited data is still in tact :)

Hoping! (Don't know if I'm the only one in this thread that did it, but I'll let you know what happens if it safe to do it or not)

Where did you buy it from? Was it a direct upgrade on your line?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Upgrade from iphone4 to iphone 6 and keep unlimited data:

Just want to confirm this will work before I do it. Please confirm if you agree this will work:

I have unlimited data plan(UDP) on my wife's and my phones and teared data plans(TDP) for my sons phone(iphone 5). My sons line, TDP, has an upgrade available. My wife has a iphone 4s and we want to upgrade to a iphone 6. Here is my plan:

1) Go to Verizon web site and order new iphone 6 on my son's line which does not require any changes to any data plans.
2) Then, when phone arrives I will activate on his line then immediately reactivate his current iphone 5 on his line. So the iphone 6 will not be on any lines.
3) I'll then go to Verizon site and "activate or switch out device" activate the new iphone 6 on my wifes line.

I believe that will result in no changes to any data plans and my wife will then have the iphone 6 active on her line and keep the UDP. Does anyone see any problems with this approach?

I know some places suggest NOT taking step 2 and just switch out sim cards and activate on my wife line but the problem is they have different sim card sizes and I don't want to mess with "cutting down" or doing something else with the sim cards. Does that cause any problems?

I truly appreciate any feedback anyone has on this plan!

THANKS!

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I would discard the sim that came with it. If you turn the phone on with that sim in it, you will probably lose your unlimited plan.

Of course, I was just testing seeing if we can add Apple to the list to apply this trick too :)

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

How will you manage this if the SIM cards are different (micro vs. nano and non-NFC vs. NFC)?

A SIM cutter makes a card smaller, and an adapter makes it bigger. Problem solved!

This doesn't solve the NFC thing though...

Hi detta123,when you pkaced the order on apple. Com, did it ask you to choose a new data plan?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Ordered the gold Galaxy S5 Gold 2 days ago from membershipwireless, Costco's online phone presence. The only option was to keep my current data plan, nowhere did it mention anything about a 2gb plan. The Note 3 also gave me this option. The other phones on their website made me choose a tiered data plan. At no point did a screen pop up saying I had to switch from unlimited data to a tiered plan. I have screenshots of every page.

I was charged for the phone today, No e-mails mention a 2gb/change in plan.

Went to my verizon online and it says I currently have unlimited.

Went to my verizon on my current Nexus. Went into the "view receipts" section under "profile" and there is a customer agreement dated 9/11/14. It is a 1 page document and shows that I upgraded my line through "wireless advocates" the name membershipwireless uses. Nowhere does it mention a change in my plan. It lists a $350 ETF, 24 month term, effective 9/9/14. Under features, it is blank. My contract has already been extended on both sites.

Needless to say, I'm still going to just do the SIM switch from my current phone to be safe, but at no point in this process have I been warned I will be switched off unlimited data, unlike Best Buy method, which at least makes you click through the losing unlimited data warning.

My prior orders from Best Buy have always failed. So if you keep getting problems from Best Buy, this may be a way to upgrade an unlimited line.

I will update if/when I receive the phone.

Has anyone else tried this? When I try this even after selecting "Upgrade your phone and keep your current rate plan." you are forced the select a data package.
