[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Just an update on this - the upgrade date & contract end date for Line 2 both changed to show 9/15/2016. Unlimited data is still intact. My order at Apple[dot]com shows "Preparing For Shipment" (no longer able to cancel). Still intending to activate this device using the existing SIM card from line 1.
Final update on the Apple.com experiment:
The phone arrived and I removed the SIM and cut it in half. I installed my SIM card from line 1, booted the phone, and restored my backup. In that time the phone registered itself and showed up on my VZW account - both Line 1 and Line 2 still have UDP.

The phone did say, "Verify this is your correct phone number - if not, call VZW" and it showed the phone number for line 2 (the line whose upgrade I used). However, the phones are correctly registered and phonecalls are working as expected.

At this point I have a subsidized iPhone6 and UDP intact on my lines. If something changes I will come back and post - otherwise, you will probably be safe doing the UDP trick directly from Apple.com.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So are you saying that the BB isn't the only one that can be done like this.

Correct, BB isn't the only place you can do this. BB is preferred because you receive a receipt saying "keep current plan", but other 3rd party retailers that let you activate the phone yourself will work. The post below yours mentions Amazon, for instance. One thing to keep in mind is that many 3rd party retailers, including Amazon, charge a secondary ETF if you do certain things to your line (drop the line, change data plan, etc.). Amazon has said that the switch SIM method will not trigger this ETF, and nobody to my knowledge has had an issue. Best Buy and Costco do not have this secondary ETF.

Also do you know if I can do this method directly in a BB location or I can only do it online.

You must activate the phone yourself so that the new SIM isn't used. BB employees will activate the phone for you with the new SIM card in store before giving you the phone, so you must have the phone shipped to your house to preserve your UDP by using your old UDP line SIM to activate the phone.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

THANK EVERYONE HERE! IT IS POSSIBLE:

I ordered me the LG G3 from amazon yesterday. $65 with overnight shipping.

1. Phone Came in today.
2. Pulled the sim card out of it that came in it. pre installed btw.
3. Went to VZW.com and added the phone to my line using the imei.
4. Put the sim card from my other phone (GS3) in it and bam my unlimited data is still intact!
Upgrade date on my line has changed. ULD package is still showing.. and the phone icon on myverizon is the LG G3!

Thank you again everybody! It is possible and proven

I didn't think step 3 was needed. I thought you just had to put in the old sim before powering up. Just trying to clarify for when it's (eventually) my turn to do this. Either way. Congrats on keeping your UDP

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

But when you check out in amazon.com, it asked you the data plan right? what did you enter in there? thanks.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So I'm looking at getting the Note 4. It's available through Best Buy as a pre-order but you have to goto into the store to order it.

So will this method still work if I have to physically go into a Best Buy to upgrade my phone?

You're correct. You should do nothing more than insert your current SIM and boot up the phone. Doing anything more than that can trigger the data plan change. Your phone information will be updated automatically.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hi has anyone tried this with ordering from verizonwireless.com

last time it worked with verizon but i ordered on one line then activated on a different line, this time i had to use upgarde for the line i want to use it on.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I have just confirmed my Apple website pre-order iphone 6 successfully kept my UDP (did not transfer the upgrade from a different line).
1) I told Verizon I was thinking about buying a used iphone 5 and wanted a nano sim for that line (had a iphone 4s)
2) They sent it to me, I then used a nano->micro SIM converter to drop it into my old Galaxy Nexus (I did have to call verizon to make it work properly, but they fixed it).
3) Today I just threw out the nano Sim that came with the new iphone 6 and dropped in the nano Sim card taken from the Galaxy Nexus

Powered on and all is well, check My Verizon and Unlimited Data remains :)

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

You can get a new SIM with no problems. The only time a new sim will effect your plan is when you got a subsidized device with it. Just go to a Verizon store, call online or order a nfc sim from Verizon ISIS/softbank.

So I went to Verizon to get a new SIM card.. They gave me one and activated it. I lost my udp. The customer service rep said she pressed something she wasn't supposed to and that she'll get it back for me. After a day of waiting, I go back in and they tell me that I can't get it back because I bought it with a two year contract. So I am now returning my phone.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I just got my iPhone 6 through Verizon.com. It was upgraded on my line 2 TDP. My line 1 UDP has an iPhone 4S. I cut down the SIM from the line 1 4S to go into the 6 and it does not work. If I go to Verizon to get a new nano-SIM for line 1, what should I tell them to do so I don't lose my UDP on Line 1?

No. BB staff will activate your phone with a new SIM card before handing the phone to you. New SIM card = loss of unlimited.

Are you saying you couldn't transfer an upgrade? That shouldn't be a problem... At least one person has ordered through Verizon and kept unlimited.

Did you use the SIM on another phone prior to the new phone? Maybe that is necessary, or as the CS rep said, the in store rep "accidentally" pressed the wrong button. At least you can revert the change by returning the phone!

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

You need a new nano-SIM card for that line. It shouldn't matter why, but if they insist on a reason, just say you got an iPhone from a friend.

Could I pre order the phone at best buy and have them ship it to my address or will they simply have it shipped to the store and then I'm gonna lose my udp when they activate it? Or will they pre order the phone have it sent to BB activate the new sim card and send it to me then? This is a serious question

Whether or not a phone is capable of shipping to your address is indicated on BB's website. If it is able to be shipped, you simply select that option as a part of the checkout process. If it's listed as not able to be shipped, you have to wait for them to decide to start shipping it if you're set on that particular phone. From what others have said, any time you go into the store, the phone is activated before being given to you by the BB employees, which results in loss of unlimited.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

My situation is a little reversed and I'm wondering if I could get it to work.

1. My phone = UDP with eligible upgrade (droid)
2. My wife = TDP - no eligible upgrade (iPhone 5)
3. My mother-in-law = TDP - no eligible upgrade (dumb phone)

I do not want to lose my UDP. My wife wants the iPhone 6 and give the iPhone 5 to my mother-in-law. Is it possible for me to:

A. Order the phone from Verizon online by transferring the upgrade to my wife and when it arrives use her existing SIM card to activate from the 5 instead of the one that comes with it OR
B. Order the phone online (possibly best buy or Costco) and when it arrives, use her existing SIM card to activate

Thanks for the advice/help.

Did you transfer your upgrade from a UDP to a TDP and use the UDP sim? Or did you just use tour UDP upgrade itself

You can simply transfer your lines upgrade to your wife's line then active it with the sum it comes with. It will not effect your UDP as long as you transfer the upgrade online. Then you can go online after activating the iP6 on your wife's line and move your wife's old phone too your mother in law's line. You don't have to worry about the sim switch in this case.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Thank you. When I called the Verizon rep, they told me any transfer of the line to a family member would lose my unlimited data. Best Buy told me that too. I just wanted to make sure and verity I would be able to do it online successfully. Does it matter what company I make the order online with? I'm assuming Verizon since it's the only one (I believe) that will let me transfer the upgrade.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Need some help and suggestions on how to upgrade, I have 2 udp lines and both eligible for upgrade.

Line 1 4g phone
Line 2 3g phone without sim

I only want to upgrade line 2, so how would I do that? Do I order from line 1 or 2

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I was able to keep my UDP on my iPhone 6 plus.
This is what I started out with:
iPhone 5s 32gb space gray with UDP with an upgrade eligible
iPhone 5s 16gb silver with UDP (not upgrade eligible)
Samsung Galaxy S4 with 4GB Data Plan (not upgrade eligible)
2 dumb phone lines (not upgrade eligible)

I did not realize Verizon changed policies regarding upgrading dumb phone lines with smart phones, and doing the switch. Luckily, I read about it while waiting in line at the Verizon Store an hour before going in at 8 AM. I read that if you have a TDP, you can transfer upgrade to TDP and then switch over, which was my plan.

I went to the Verizon Store and had them transfer my upgrade to the SGS4 line and had them keep the original data plan on that line. Surprisingly, they still had the 4GB plan for $30 for it. They activated the line with the subsidized iPhone 6 Plus and handed it to me. My line was not affected and I made sure there were no changes when I was transferring upgrade over. Verizon Reps informed me that I will lose my UDP no matter what even if I transferred my upgrade eligibility. They don't know what they're talking about. They said the only way was to either 1. Buy the phone full retail price, or 2. Use another line's upgrade to upgrade that particular phone, and swap SIM cards.

Then, I went online afterwards and had them do a "switch" SIM Card activation, so I swapped my SIM card with the SIM card on the iPhone 6 Plus. I made sure online it kept my unlimited data plan when I did it through my Verizon. My iPhone 5S then became the original SGS4 line. Then I went online again and provided the SIM Card ID for the SIM card in the SGS4 and activated that SIM card on that line. It worked also. So basically, the new SIM card that originally came with the iPhone 6 Plus is inactivated.

I checked my Verizon online and they had listed the right phones under the numbers, and confirmed I still had the UDP with my own line.

I hope this helps for others who wanted to keep their UDP. Unfortunately, from what I've read online, you need to have a TDP available to have this to work. I'm not sure if they actually closed the loophole for dumbphones.

Here is some proof with screenshot and receipt of subsidized phone price. I'm glad that NH has no sales tax!

I went to Verizon and got an unregistered micro 4G NFC SIM. I have an iPhone 4S on a UDP line (Line 1) and an upgraded TDP line with an iPhone 6 in hand already with SIM taken out (Line 2).

Here's what I plan to do. I'm not sure if this will work (my issue is getting an activated 4G NFC SIM on the UDP line). Is this correct?

1. Insert the micro 4G NFC SIM into my iPhone 4S (Line 1).
2. Call Verizon to activate the SIM on that line (Line 1)
3. Pull out the SIM from the iPhone 4S and place it in the iPhone 6.
4. Activate the iPhone 6 on Line 2.
5. Add back the old iPhone 2 Line 2 (deactivating the iPhone 6)
6. Activate the iPhone 6 on Line 1.

Will this work? Specifically, will activating a 4G NFC SIM in an iPhone 4S work?

Thanks in advance for any help.
