[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

While it seems that the preferred method is ordering from BB or another 3rd party (or even VZW) with a TDP line, and then activating on an UDP line, is there any problem with activating on the TDP, reactivating the old phone on that line, and then activating the new phone on the UDP line?

For my purposes:
Line 1: UDP (Upgrade available 11/23)
Line 2: UDP (Upgrade available now)
Line 3: TDP (Upgrade available 2016)

I'm looking to get an iPhone 6 for Line 1. Is there anything wrong with transferring the upgrade from Line 2 to Line 3, going to a store tomorrow and getting a shiny new iPhone, then coming home and reactivating the phone that was on line 3, and putting the iPhone on line 1? In my mind, it doesn't seem existentially different from buying an iPhone 6 full retail and then putting it on line 1 (or the equivalent of Line 3 got an iPhone but wants her old phone back so I'm giving it Line 1).

I know exploiting a loophole like this (or rather, Verizon's perspective) doesn't necessarily lend to logic, so that's why I'm asking haha...

Thanks.

Just following up from a few weeks ago. I ordered an iPhone 6 through Best Buy doing exactly as I wanted to. Transferred upgrade on UDP to TDP, then activated it on the TDP, deactivated, reactivated TDP's old phone, and reactivated the iPhone on the other UDP line. It worked marvelously and my two lines of unlimited data have been preserved. Just wanted to report success on this method since some folks were unclear if it would work. Cheers!

And did you use your existing sim cards, not the "NEW" preinstalled sim card? Thanks for the update!!!!

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Sorry if a stupid question (prob is, I am a noob) - am trying to find an alternative to SIM cutting for the bestbuy method. Has anyone had success with walking into a VZ store, telling them you have ordered a phone off contract elsewhere, and need a nano SIM card? Assuming if they issue you a nano SIM w/ all your details on it, you can then load it into the new phone received via BB.com w/o relinquishing UDP, right? Thanks in advance!

In theory, it SHOULD work. However, someone earlier in this thread did basically this exact thing and the VZW rep programmed the SIM card with the same information as the SIM sent with the phone by Best Buy. When the SIM was used, it was like using the included SIM with the phone from BB and UDP was lost. Ideally, you should use the SIM in a different phone before using it to activate the new phone. This could have just been a rep's mistake though.

When you activate on the TDP phone first (the line he ordered it on) you don't need to use an old SIM.

No, he transferred his upgrade from the UDP to the TDP. So what I was asking is if he used his existing sim card for the TDP line? And did he use his existing UDP sim card when he moved the phone to the UDP line. Basically not using the pre-installed sim card in the new phone at all.

i think if you do that you may end up with a awaiting activation notification on your account other have reported using the sim that cam with the new phone first on the tdp line that the upgrade was moved too then putting the original phone on the tdp line then just putting the new phone new sim on the udp line.

No what I said was right. I know he transferred from the UDP, he transferred it to the TDP. When you do that and activate the phone on the TDP first you don't have to use the old SIM. You use the SIM that came with the phone. How that answers your question.

Sorry, you response was a bit confusing. When you put your quote together like so- "When you activate on the TDP phone first (the line he ordered it on)" it sounded to me like it was from the same line, that's all. I figured you knew what he was talking about considering your post count.

Anyways, knowing this info that you can use the pre-installed sim card and activate on the TDP (which it was intended for) is great news. I don't recall we had a definitive answer to this as to whether or not the transferred line (UDP) would retain the UDP and the pending order would drop off. From this info all transfer upgrades should work as they did prior to Aug. 25th, as there were questions on whether it would work or not.

No problem, this used to be two separate threads. One about the BB way and one the Verizon way (transferring upgrades) so adding the two threads together just in my opinion makes it much more confusing. Plus he did the Verizon method on Best Buy LOL. So I totally understand how all this post including this one can be confusing.

Wow thanks for the post! I think this clears up the question we had, like what would happen if we transfer an upgrade from UDP to TDP since Verizon stated that the $30 data plan would tagged to the feature phone for the contract term if anyone uses the upgrade of the feature phone to get a smart phone (even when one puts the line back to a feature phone). This makes so much more sense as someone stated few pages back.

Anyone in here still got the talk txt data promo with UDP? I have 3 lines eligible for upgrade but a bit hesitant and worried of losing the promo while trying to keep UDP.

I have it and was told you would lose it.

I have a unlimited data line with the talk text data credit, transferred it a tiered data line with the talk text data credit and both lines still have the credit and nothing changed with the data plans

Does the "Best Buy Method" work if you order a phone through MotoMaker? I scanned this thread and haven't found a definitive response. Thanks!

Edit- Also, what do I have to do to go from a Galaxy S3 to a new Moto X or Note 4? Cut the sim?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So i just got my iphone6 today. I upgraded it using my mom's TDP line. I pulled out the sim it came with, put my phone 5 UDP sim into the 6 and turned it on. I started the process and then it came up saying
"is this the correct phone number XXX-XXX-1366". Well no, my phone number (UPD / sim card i entered into the 6) ends in 1370. Has this happened to anyone else? I turned off the phone and am now stuck. I don't want to lose my UPD.

Should I activate the phone on the line ending in 1366 and then swap the device? I bought the phone through apple.com so as of now it isn't even showing on the Verizon site, just that the 1366 line contract was extended.

I would do just that, activate it on your mom's line and then add her phone back, which will remove the new phone off her line. After you do that you should be able to add it to the UDP without a problem.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Has anyone ordered through verizon.com ship to home and done the sim swap that way? I purchased a full retail phone on apple.com after using my upgrade on apple.com and then returned the upgrade and have my upgrade eligibility restored. Here is the problem, the full retail purchase attached to my number on apple.com won't allow me to use my verizon upgrade on their website (which is a problem for many people I have seen) bc it is tying the full retail phone to my verizon account and saying it is an upgrade (when it isn't). So long story short, I can use my verizon upgrade on ANY site outside of apple.com which leaves me to only be able to order the 6+ from verizon.com since best buy isn't shipping the 6+ to home.

I am no rookie to this game, but have not purchased through verizon and sim swapped, only apple.com and bestbuy.com. Has this method been proven to work or not work through verizon.com? I see no reason why it shouldn't work, just being more risky as it is through verizon.

Has anyone upgraded through verizon and done the sim swap to keep unlimited?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

My wife said screw it on the 6 plus. asked me what she should get and she is now the proud owner of a new LG G3. For anyone worried about going from a 3G phone I can confirm as long as you activate another 4G phone it should work.

Her upgrade path

1. Order new 4G SIM from Verizon website to use in an intermediate 4G phone (Galaxy Nexus).
2. Power off and remove 3G SIM from current phone (iPhone 4s)
3. Insert new 4G SIM in to intermediate phone (Galaxy Nexus) and activate.
4. Verify intermediate phone appears on VZW.com along with plan details, UDP, etc.
5. Order new phone (LG G3) on BB.com as an upgrade and ship to home.
6. Without powering on new phone (LG G3) remove 4G SIM and destroy
7. Remove 4G SIM from intermediate phone (Galaxy Nexus) and insert in to new phone (LG G3)
8. Power on new phone (LG G3) and verify phone appears on VZW.com
9. Enjoy
