[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Well that is simple enough to check. After I get the phone on Tuesday and activate it, I will have to keep my eye on the status. I'll update my post if the pending activation is removed. As for activation of the Turbo. Should I activate it on the line used for the upgrade and then transfer it the the UDP line. Or should I just activate it on the UDP line?
Avoid the pending activation and just activate it on the line your ordered first, also by doing this you don't need to change any SIMs.

What you are saying is to leave the supplied sim in the Turbo and activate the phone on the TDP second line I ordered the phone with. Or do I use the sim from the iPhone 6 that is currently on the TDP second line to activate the Turbo .? Sorry I don't want to mess this up. I really appreciate all the help.! My UDP has my S3 on it now.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I have the iPhone 6+ with UD and I also purchased the Nexus 6 from Motorola. Do I just walk into Verizon and ask for a new sim card? Will I still have my UD? And can I keep my iPhone sim card as well so i can switch back and forth from iPhone 6+ to Nexus 6 whenever I choose?

So long as you didn't buy a subsidized phone on the unlimited line then the store will activate any phone you want. Leave the old phone at home, so Verizon will give you a new sim and you can keep the old one. With that said, I think that the nexus 6 uses a nano sim, so you can just put the 6p sim into the n6.

Sent from my Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note 4

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Just found this out. Sorry I didn't even think of it. My S3 with the unlimited data plan has a micro sim card. The Turbo has a nano sim. Duh. So I guess I have to cut it. Any suggestions?

And this is another reason to just activate it on the TDP. The easiest thing for you is the following:

1) Log onto Verizon and transfer your UDP line's upgrade to a TDP line;
2) Order the new smartphone you want on the TDP line;
3) When the new smartphone arrives, activate it on the TDP line using the SIM card that ships with the phone;
4) Wait at least an hour and make a few calls/text from the new smartphone to make sure it activated OK;
5) Log onto Verizon and put the TDP line's old smartphone back on the TDP line; and
6) Log onto Verizon and put the new smartphone on the UDP line.

By doing these 6 steps, you won't have to worry about pending activations or wrong SIM sizes.

Perfect! I will keep you all posted as to what happens.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I upgraded and am waiting for the pending activation to fall off, if it doesn't I will activate it with the supplied sim. The unlimited data stayed with no problems thou

Sorry so late.
Yes activate the phone on the TDP that your ordered it on with the SIM it came with.
Then add the old phone back (iPhone). This with free up the Droid.
Now add the Droid to your UDP line, still no need to change the SIM.
Do parts two and three of this online through Verizon.

Sounds like you are going against what everybody has done, but keep us informed.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Close to pulling the trigger on BB method and started re-reading posts here and now getting a little confused about if transfer is needed in my case, so apologies if repetitive...

I have the Nationwide Talk Shared plan, line 1 is my Galaxy S4 UDP and it's up for upgrade now. Line 2 is dummy line/non-smartphone and not eligible yet for upgrade (expires 7/10/15).

So for BB method, i just do upgrade order online (Note 4) to my UDP line that's up for upgrade right? and then just do the sim swap.

No transfers needed to be done prior right? Just straight up upgrade online, ship home and sim swap and good to go?

As stated, you run the risk of pending activation which isn't necessarily falling off some lines like we thought. This can lead to problems down the road with Verizon and loss of UDP. You can do this, but just make sure that pending activation isn't on the line after you activate the phone and that your contract gets extended another two years. If that happens, you are in the clear.

Yep, I was going to look out for this pending activation, thanks. I wanted to be sure first my process with the BB method is correct.

Anyone else do the BB method in November and have pending activation drop off yet?

Other than that, your method is exactly as it should be for the BB method. Hope you get lucky and don't get the pending activation. I didn't get it my first time, but got it after a return and reorder of an upgrade which sucked lol. I see more of them dropping off when people transfer an upgrade to a tiered line and then do the sim swap instead of activating on the tiered line. I just had a single line so I couldn't do that. Good luck though. It's worth a try.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Ok thanks for the info! Can't believe what a pain verizon is to just upgrade a stupid phone now - it's ridiculous. And i really do not want to screw up my unlimited so want to make sure i do this correctly...

This sounds very close to what I believe to be the solution to my question so I hope you or someone else can clarify for me if I'd follow the same steps for my situation.

I've got two lines, not sharing anything, one with UDP and one on the $60 / 2gb data loyalty plan. I am actually going to port out/terminate the $60 line which is about one year into a contract, but before I do I want to take advantage of the upgrade that the UDP line has.

If I transfer the UDP's upgrade to the $60 plan, buy a new phone, make sure it activates, then reactivate the original phone on the $60 so I can give the new phone to the UDP line, is this what happens?:

  • The UDP contract begins a new 2 year term but is still UDP.
  • The $60 plan's ETF will still be pro-rated 1-year
  • Everything is fine and dandy? :)

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I'd like some input on a question I asked earlier.

I'm waiting until tomorrow to see if Verizon reveals their plans for the Nexus 6, but if they won't be carrying it for awhile I plan to upgrade my month to month UDP using the BB method with something else, such as an iPhone. Then I'll sell it new and use the cash to buy a Nexus 6 outright. I know I'll lose a bit of money in the process, but it's worth it to me to not have to wait so long. This of course is assuming that Verizon won't have the Nexus 6 available shortly.

This question is assuming that I upgrade with a phone I plan to sell immediately without using.

1. When I receive the phone, I know that I need to remove and destroy the SIM card that comes in it. Should I insert my current SIM card and boot the device to provision the phone, or should I simply ship it to the buyer without putting it on my line or booting it up? Will either method make a difference to my contract? If I don't activate the phone on my line before selling, and I remove and destroy the SIM card that came with it, is there anything the buyer could do to cause me to lose my unlimited data?

My next question is purely hypothetical, and will not happen as long as I have a breath, but I always wondered about second hand phones on a contract:

2. Let's say for example that before the 2 year contract is up I default on the plan. Is the phone I bought on contract and then sold tied to the account? Will the buyer suddenly find himself with a blacklisted phone? I would think that Verizon would be blocking a phone somewhere. It could be the phone that is currently being used on the active plan being defaulted on is blocked by Verizon. But what if I'm using my 3 year old Nexus which is worth <$50? Is that phone blocked while the still valuable iPhone 6+ is not?

For 2, yes the phone can be blacklisted and blocked by all carriers as the blacklist is shared by all carriers now.

For 1, if it never gets activated you will be stuck with a pending activation on your line and can't do anything to fix that if the phone is gone. This PA will limit your ability to buy anything on that line in the future and can cost you the UDP. If you open the box you might as well put your sim in and see if it activates and removes the pending activation on your line.

Overall, it would be very risky to sell a phone that was never truly activated and had the pending order removed. Would certainly be a headache in the making.

So did got lose your UDP?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So did got lose your UDP?

Not letting that happened. I returned my phone on the 14th day bc I still had the pending activation and it is very obvious to Verizon you have it. If you ever need support they will see it and ask what is going on. They could potentially activate the order themselves after the 14 days which will remove UDP or if you ever need a new sim it could remove unlimited data as well. Mr Toad alluded to the risks of pending activations a cpl pages back or so. It is painfully obvious that pending activations that do not fall off prior to your 14 day return period are not worth waiting any longer on. I would return upgrade and try again if it doesn't come off when you activate the new phone when using these methods. That's just my opinion though. If anyone keeps the phone and the PA doesn't fall of then you better avoid Verizon or they will find a way to get you for using an upgrade and retaining unlimited data bc they know the sim that shipped with the phone wasn't activated.
