[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Since you used a transfered upgrade from UDP to a TDP line you did not have to destroy the SIM. All you had to do was activate on the TDP with the SIM out came with. Once that is done then you can switch it around without ever changing SIMs. But now you know.
Hey Tx...
I think you MAY have wanted to respond to my post. I want to AGREE with you that when I transferred my upgrade to the 2GB TDP and received the phone for that 2 GB TDP, I should just be able to activate it.... Correct? Once the activation is confirmed, I can move it to another line on my account with a UDP. Can you CONFIRM this would work, or are you just assuming? I am thinking the same thing tho....

Yes that would work, that is the way it is done when transferring upgrades.

Do you really have to destroy the SIM card? Or just make sure it is not used? The SIM card by itself cannot communicate, correct?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

This was two different threads put together as one. One was the Best Buy method that you used and one was a Verizon transfer upgrade method. Don't know why they added them together because it makes it confusing for new people to the thread like you. But don't worry you did nothing wrong.

I was taking out the trash, so I flattened the Best Buy shipping box. I threw out the plastic air cushion bags and noticed a Verizon SIM card holder at the bottom of the box! (next to the Best Buy pamphlet on how to activate new phones)

When I received the phone yesterday, it was clearly sent from a Best Buy retail store. It even had a label taped to the box that showed it. When I open the Samsung box, the sim was already inside, I took it out and cut it up. Then I opened the batter(still sealed in plastic bag) and started charging.

The sim card holder is the credit card size one, with the micro sim card taken out. I matched the sim number and it matches the sim card that was already in the phone. (had to find the 4 cut up little pieces from the trash and reassemble them to see the sim card)

Based on this, it appears that just before shipping, a Best Buy retail store employee popped the micro sim card out of the sim card holder and inserted into the phone. Since the battery was still in a sealed plastic bag, I assume he/she didn't turn it on... but could he/she have activated the sim somehow? if not, what was the purpose of taking the micro sim out and inserting it into the phone before shipping.

I'm still not sure why a bestbuy.com order was shipped from a Best Buy retail store only 18 miles away from my house to begin with.... :(

Is this something that I should be concerned about? When my friend bought his S5 from a Verizon store, there was no sim card in the sim card slot inside the phone. I went with him and I remember the VZW manager going to the back to grab a new sim card and then inserting it into the new S5.

I don't think you should worry about it bein activated before hand. If it did you would had received a notification from vz and your current SIM and phone would stopped working.

On the shipping from a retail store near by. All the big retail stores are doing that to be more efficient with their logistic to save money and improve their customer experience by getting your item to you earlier.

Kick back and enjoy your new phone!

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I have been following this thread for two years waiting for the time to upgrade. Lurking. Learning. Reading almost every single post. The time finally came.

I had two phones on my nationwide 700 family plan:
Galaxy Nexus, UDP, upgrade eligible
Galaxy Nexus, 4 GB, upgrade eligible

Long story short, I just picked up two Galaxy S5 phones and a Note 4 for a total of $180 out of pocket and kept UDP on the one phone. Of course, I now have three phones on a two year contract, but I have been with Verizon for 10 years.

Here is how I did it.

Best Buy has some GREAT deals going on right now ahead of the shopping season. Monday I added a new line to my family plan. Paid $1 for a Galaxy S5. In return, not only did I get a phone, I also got a $150 gift card from Best Buy because it was a new line. Sweet deal. It is like they paid me $149 to sign a two year contract. This was a planned purchase for my son’s first phone (birthday and Christmas two days apart).

Tuesday, I went back to Best Buy, and upgraded the 4 GB line to a Note 4 (the one I have been drooling over). I used the $150 gift card that I got the day before and another $50 gift card that I had been saving. Total was around $127.

When I got home, I confirmed the 4 GB line was showing the Note 4 at the MyVerizon site. Seeing how that was active, I switched the GNexus back onto the 4 GB line (by selecting add another device which I had previously used). This freed up the Note 4. Weird thing though is this required switching the SIM cards which from reading all the posts didn’t seem like that was necessary. Oh well, in my case, it needed to be done. Maybe it wasn’t necessary and I was just dumb, but I got the Nexus working again on the 4 GB line just like nothing had happened.

Next, I swapped the Note 4 onto the UDP line via the web site. Same method. Select device that had been previously used with account (Note 4). Made a few phone calls, texts. Total time was less than five minutes and the web site showed the UDP line with the Note 4 and the little updated phone image.

As of that time (Tuesday night), UDP line still showing unlimited data, no changes to plan.

Woke up in the morning today (Wednesday) and confirmed the MyVerizon site was still showing my first line having the Note 4 and UDP. Sweet!

Here is the weird part. I transferred the still-available upgrade from the UDP to the 4 GB line so I could upgrade the 4 GB again. On the web it appeared to take effect, but it was like it didn’t stick because I went back an hour later and it had reverted. Tried it again, and the same thing happened. Before reverting it gave me the opportunity to upgrade the 4 GB with the online store, so I thought maybe it was just a time sensitive thing.

Decided to go back to Best Buy today (Wednesday) and attempt to upgrade the 4 GB line again. Just played kind of dumb about the whole process. Told the rep I wanted to upgrade the 4 GB with a Galaxy S5. He said my account showed I had an upgrade waiting on the Note 4. I asked if I could transfer that. He said sure. So he transferred the upgrade to the 4 GB line and I walked out of Best Buy with ANOTHER Galaxy S5 for $1.09.

Got home and 7 hours later, the MyVerizon web site is still showing the Note 4 as UDP, a Galaxy S5 with 4 GB (original) and a Galaxy S5 with 2 GB (new). All phones showing upgrades two years from now.

The thing about this whole upgrade business that confuses me is the part where I transferred the upgrade from the UDP to the 4 GB. When I attempted to do it originally on my laptop, it appeared to work (at least for a short time). However, when I attempted to do it from my Note 4 while waiting in the store (and selecting request desktop site in Chrome) I got this weird screen that said I could not do this unless I switch the UDP line to a More Everything and lose UDP. This scared me, but I went ahead with the process and played it calm.

Good for another three years or so.

When you do the transfer online you have to use it then, you can set it up for transfer and it stay like that. What you did in the store is the same thing you would do online.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Do you really have to destroy the SIM card? Or just make sure it is not used? The SIM card by itself cannot communicate, correct?

No it can not communicate by itself, people destroy them so somebody else won't activate it and screw up their account.

I guess the NSA never found a way to communicate and extract information from sim cards that are not inside phones? :D

When you activated your new Note 4 on the UDP did it ask you to use the old SIM from the Nexus or did it use the new SIM that came with the phone?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Wow its been almost two years since last being on this thread. I Remember reading the then only 50 pages to go through. Times were much simple then. Huh huh. So i ordered the s5 from bb using the basic line upgrade. For the $1 that everyone is taking advantage of. Of course when the phone arrives take out new sim and insert UDP sim. Here's what I'm wondering about? My UDP line has an upgrade coming up in 4/15, what will happen to udp upgrade when I activate the new s5 on my UDP line?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I'm guessing itll still stay intact since I'm just activating as a new device. Also I forgot to mention I'm on the family plan
Line1 UDP upgrade 4/15
Line 2 basic upgrade avail. Now
Line 3 basic no upgrade avail.
Order is still being processed through bb. I hope all is good

If you order online, have device delivered to your home and swap the old SIM into the new device you will maintain the UDP.

Remember do not allow the new device to power on until your old SIM is in it

Yeah,I know but from some of the posts I read some bb r pre installing and activating them before they leave the site? This may be false but who knows.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

If we do the best buy method, can we use our best buy credit card to purchase phone online? Maybe take advantage of the 18 months interest free offer.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Little update on bb when first ordered it said order status being processed nopw it says order status not available? Is this normal or just the high volume traffic on bb. Just wondering

Yeah,I know but from some of the posts I read some bb r pre installing and activating them before they leave the site? This may be false but who knows.

I can confirm the following.

1. ordered from Best Buy's website
2. order shipped from Best Buy retail store 18 miles away from my house
3. someone at that retail store popped out the Verizon micro SIM card from the credit-card size holder
4. someone inserted that micro SIM card into my new phone and shipped it
5. the phone's original battery was still in sealed Samsung plastic bag

Have no idea why that person felt the need to do the extra work by putting the SIM card in.
I have no idea if he/she "activated" the sim card at the store prior to boxing it up and shipping it. :(

Yeah that's what I'm worried about. I should've asked gift wrap it so they don't open the package. If that's possible

I am keeping a close eye on my VZW account, but as of right now, the UDP has not been touched.

Not sure why the Best Buy store employee did that... per he/she was just trying to be nice by putting the sim card in?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So at that point, the Note 4 had the old SIM from the 4 GB line because I had already swapped once. When I went to swap the Note 4 onto the UDP line, it asked me to swap SIMs again, so the SIM that is in the Note 4 is the original UDP SIM.
