[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

1) Activate the new phone on line 2.

2) Since you are not using the unlimited upgrade, you are not in danger of losing it. You can swap the phones online, by swapping SIM cards or by going into a store. I would swap the online because the SIM card are different sizes. Better yet get some sim adapters so you swap phones in the future.

3) yes, should be able to do it as soon as the pending order is off line 2. This should happen as soon as the new phone is activated. If you get the SIM cards to be the same size when you do step one it will be really easy.
I got the new phone and activated the new data line. When I tried to switch devices online, I got the message that "The SIM cards associated with the two devices you requested to switch services between are incompatible.".
1) Is my only option to cut down the micro sim to nano sim and get a micro sim adapter for nano sim? or is there a way to get Verizon micro and nano sims and replace the existing SIMs? I could not find such product in their site at all.
2) If I cut/use adapter ..., I believe my account will still show original phones against the numbers. Will that be a problem? And will I be able to transfer upgrade in future, even if Verizon has out of date info?

Thanks.

1) You can get a free sim from a Verizon corporate store or if you call 611. Just tell them you got a phone from a third party and need the proper sim. If you go to the store you will need the phone. Just make sure they don't make any changes to your account.

2) The account will show what ever phone is currently active on the line. This will not have any effect on transferring upgrades in the future.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

1. Upgrade Line 2 to the iPhone 6.
2. When you want the S6 transfer the upgrade from Line 3 to Line 2. When you get the Phone you can just discard the SIM and put the phone on line 1. You will be left with a pending activation. This only matters of you try to change something. It took about 3 months for it to go away for me.

You will only lose unlimited by directly upgrading your unlimited line. Taking a phone from another line will not cause you to lose unlimited data.

That is much more clear. Thank you Mr. Toad and dusoccer10. You've both been a tremendous help.

Just to verify... The bottom line is that you can do whatever you want as long as you don't directly upgrade a UDP line. You can take a UDP line with an upgrade, transfer the upgrade to another line, upgrade that line's phone, maybe even activate it on that line before you swap it back to the UDP line. You could also take a regular line with an upgrade, use it to buy a new phone and then just swap SIMs with the current UDP phone.

I'll check back and post again with my step-by-step plan when I'm ready to make a change.

That is pretty much sums it up. There are several different ways to upgrade an unlimited line. Transferring the upgrade to a tiered line is definitely the preferred method.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hello!

So I have been reading through the forum up until the middle of February, wanted to make sure I had the way down for either an upgrade to the S5 or the S6, which has some confusion on the whole nano-SIM. Hopefully this helps out for people who want the S6 as well!

Nationwide tlk&txt share 1400
L1: Galaxy S4 with UDP (want to upgrade to either the S5 OR S6) (upgrade available)
L2: Galaxy S5 with 2gb (no upgrade)
L3: lg with no data (no upgrade)
L4: Samsung with no data (upgrade available)

If I went the S5 route I believe I would (as taken from other posts and modified)
1.) Log on to Verizon
2.) Transfer upgrade from Line 1 to Line 2
3.) Upgrade Line 2 to the S5 and have it shipped home
4.) When the S5 arrives, activate it on Line 2 for an hour (make sure call, text, data all work)
5.) Power off the S5, log onto Verizon, and reactivate the old S5
6.) Finally, activate the S5 on Line 1
My question is for this route, when I activate the S5 on line one, would I put the original simcard from the line 1 S4 with UDP in at this point? (step 5)

Now if I was going for the Galaxy S6, I would have to order a new simcard by calling 611 and saying that I got a 3rd party phone that needs a nano SIMcard correct? I've seen various posts about them knowing there is an activation on my account and to wait until it falls off the account?

Thank you for reading!

1) You can just swap the sim card to put the phone on line 1. You don't need to log in.

2) You can probably swap the S6 to Line 1 online. Otherwise you can try calling Verizon or going to a corporate store to get the Nano Sim. As always just be careful when doing this and don't let them change your plan.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So it would look more like this correct for the S5
1.) Log on to Verizon
2.) Transfer upgrade from Line 1 to Line 2
3.) Upgrade Line 2 to the S5 and have it shipped home
4.) When the S5 arrives, put the original sim card from my S4 (UDP carrier)
5.) Activate and good to go?

As in considering the S6
1.) Log on to Verizon
2.) Transfer upgrade from Line 1 to Line 2
3.) Upgrade Line 2 to the S6 and have it shipped home
4.) When the S6 arrives, go to Verizon store adn request new nano sim
5.) Activate and good to go?

or
just perform the swap online with the provided simcard

Could you elaborate more on the swapping the S6 online (which I am assuming would be closely related to getting an iphone with the nano), would that be obtaining a new sim card with the UDP credentials by claiming I have a third party phone and then inserting that one and then swapping it from verizon online?

Thank you for the quick respond as well

I would still active the phone on line 2. This will prevent you from dealing with a pending activation. They can take months to go away.

You can swap devices on the website. Pick activate or switch devices. If there is a pending activation you won't be able to do it.

If you get the S6, don't worry about the different SIM size. When you reactivate the old phone on line 2 this will deactivate the nano SIM that comes with the S6. When you go to add the S6 to the unlimited line, you end up reprogramming the nano SIM. It will become coded to unlimited.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So here is my current situation:

I have 5 Lines.

1-UDP
2-UDP
3-Basic
4-Basic
5-Basic

In looking at this, 3-5 are NOT on a tiered data plan. I have upgrades available that I could transfer (though I can't find that option on the Verizon website anymore). Verizon states that we cannot even transfer an upgrade to a basic phone and upgrade it to a smartphone because that will cause us to lose our unlimited data on both UDP lines due to the new order being put on a tiered plan (you can't have a tiered plan and udp plan on the same account).

Has anyone else been told this? Would the methods posted above work in this situation? AKA - Is Verizon just trying to be dicks and convince me we can't upgrade.

Give me your thoughts.. Thanks!

What is your ultimate goal? You can have tiered lines and Unlimited on the same account. If you want a new phone for Line 1 or 2 and want to use and upgrade from 3 I would order from a third party. You can order the phone from Best Buy. Just don't turn the phone on and then discard the SIM. This will bypass the data requirement for line 3. Then just put your unlimited sim into the new phone.

Exactly. I want to upgrade both my UDP lines.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

How would I go about keeping my unlimited data

Line 1: Galaxy Note 3 UDP No upgrade
Line 2: iPhone 4s UDP Upgradable
Line 3: iPhone 5s 6 gb No upgrade
Line 4: Galaxy Note 3 2 gb No upgrade

I want to upgrade Line 2 to a Galaxy S5 while keeping my unlimited data. How should I go about doing that?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

What phones are currently on your unlimited line and what phones do you want? You have plenty of options from the Best Buy Method to "upgrading" a basic line but never actually activating the smartphone on the line (which prevents the $30 data charge). It's fairly easy to upgrade with your current situation once we know what type of phones you have/want.

It's fairly easy through either Best Buy or Verizon. Just do the following:

1.) Log into Best Buy or Verizon and transfer your upgrade from Line 2 to either Line 3 or 4 (it must be to a tiered line so whichever one is easier for you is the way to go).
2.) Order the S5 on the tiered line and have it shipped to home
3.) When the S5 arrives, activate it on the tiered line.
4.) Once activated on the tiered line, wait at least an hour. Test calls, texts, and data to make sure it works.
5.) After confirming the S5 works as normal, shut it down.
6.) Log into Verizon and reactivate the old phone that was on the tiered line previously. This now frees up the S5 to be moved to Line 2.
7.) Now activate the S5 on Line 2.

After these 7 steps, you'll be able to enjoy the S5 with unlimited data. When Line 1 gets an upgrade, just follow the exact same steps and you'll be able to upgrade it too.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

First of all, I want to thank those that have spent their valuable time responding to all of the inquiries on this thread.

After following this thread for weeks now, I'm trying to understand when there are differences between ordering from Verizon versus from Best Buy. For example, when trying to upgrade an UDP line using an upgrade transferred to a basic line, when ordering from Verizon my understanding is that you use the sim that comes with the phone and activate the phone directly on the UDP line by entering the Imei and sim number in the Verizon website under the 'activate new device option', so long as you don't turn the phone on first.

On the other hand, if you order through Best Buy, you would need to destroy the sim that comes with the phone and use preferably your old sim, perhaps having to cut it or adapt it to the size of the new phone's sim. Is that accurate?

Thanks in advance. ??????

On line 1 a note 3, and line 2 an s4. I am wanting to move one to an s5 and the other to an iphone (I know I know, it's for the wife). haha.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

How do I transfer upgrade to the basic phone lines on BB.com? I don't see that option there or on Verizon.
