[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hi,

Line 1 - Galaxy Nexus UDP, upgrade available
Line 2 - iPhone 5, TDP, upgrade available

1) How do I upgrade Line 1 to an iPhone 6 Plus >> Understand a bit but need exact steps!!
2) After upgrade in step 2, what would happen to the upgrade of Line 1 (assuming that in the method suggested, the upgrade of Line 2 would be used)
3) It seems that the SIMs in both are different. What to do about it?
4) Whether I should do it in Store or on Verizon web site or on Phone and what precautions to undertake?

Thanks a Ton!

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Transfer upgrade 1 to 3. Activate on 3. Swap device online to Line 1. Reactivate old line 3 sim in the 5c.

Transfer 2 to 4. Activate the phone on 4. Swap the sim cards.

An update to this. I got the 2 iPhone 6 today and I applied the instructions above.

First of all thanks very much for the instructions Mr. Toad !

I am able to upgrade my UDP iPhone 5 to iPhone 6 by swapping the sim cards.

Unfortunately I'm unable to upgrade the iPhone 4 (UDP). When "swap device online to Line 1", I was asked to change my plan for the phone to 7GB data with mobile hotspot. I would lose the UDP if I proceed. So I canceled the process. Did I make a mistake somewhere on this? Thank you.

Assuming you have put the original phones back on their lines (i.e. your tiered ones are good to go), you can take the new iPhone to a VAR and have them activate it on your unlimited line in place of the iPhone 4.

Thank you, dusoccer10. I will try this. So let me summarize the steps that i need to do:
1) the iPhone 4 remains unchanged (it's still UDP and working fine)
2) the new iPhone 6 is now on iPhone 5c (TDP and working fine)
3) I'll go to a VAR and ask them to activate the iPhone 6 on to my UDP iPhone 4
4) Do I then ask them to also reactivate the old 5c? Or should I do this separately online myself?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Line 1: Dumb phone - upgrade available
Line 2: Smart phone - upgrade available (mine)
Line 3: Dumb phone - upgrade available
Line 4: Dumb phone - upgrade available

I tried searching for someone with the same setup:

I saw this quote earlier, I think this is exactly what I need to do as well. Hopefully every line having an upgrade won't matter. Except instead of a galaxy i'm going with something else (G4 maybe?)

  • Because I'm upgrading a dumb phone, I can order from Best Buy or Verizon, but only these 2?

  • I'm going from a Nano sim to a micro sim, depending on the phone, so I'll just buy an adapter on Amazon?

I figured I was going to stay with my Moto X (2013) for a long time, but my battery is just awful. I'm so thankful that someone found a work-around, and is so helpful with sharing!!!
Thank You!!!
You pretty much got it. The problem with Amazon is the second ETF. You probably will be charged if you never activate it.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Gotcha. Your plan will work fine and the 6+ can be ordered from Verizon since you are using a basic line's upgrade. If you need to return it for any reason, just put your SIM in the 5c before taking the 6+ back. Make sure to get your upgrade restored and redo the process if the 6+ doesn't work out for any reason.

I'm back. Line 1 (and 3-5) Dumb phones. Line 2 UDP with iphone 5c. I have ordered an Iphone 6+ on Line one. Could I, alternatively to old SIM in new phone method, activate Iphone 6+ on line 2 with:

2.) When the new phone arrives do not turn it on or plug it in.
3.) Log into Verizon's website
4.) Select "activate or switch device"
5.) Select Line 2
6.) Select "phone that has never been on the account before"
7.) Select "use pre-existing SIM"
8.) Type in the IMEI and SIM numbers that came with the new phone. Usually, there is a sticker on the box that contains them.

The reason I would want to do this is, I would like to put the iphone 5c on a current dumbline when I can with a new 2Gig data plan for that line, but I don't want that line that line to be locked into the data for when the phone gets broken and I switch it back to dumb phone. The above would allow me to 1) not have to drive to the VAR to activate iphone 5c, and 2) if it would make the pending activation disappear faster when I activate new SIM on UDP as an "phone never on account", allowing me to activate 5c on Line 3 sooner. Would that work to retain UDP and not get locked into new data? And is it just as safe for retaining UDP? Thanks again.

Here is all you need to do:

1.) Power off the iPhone 6.
2.) Take the SIM out of the iPhone 6 and put it back in the 5c.

Now the tiered line is back to normal and all the is left is to get the iPhone 6 on the unlimited line. Take the iPhone 6 (without a SIM) to a VAR and ask them to put it on your unlimited line in place of the iPhone 4.

Verizon's system is going to make you move your SIM from the 5c to the 6+ since they are the same size. You can't get around that. However, you can keep the SIM that comes with the 6+ and use that to activate the 5c on a basic line later on.

It's fairly easy:

1.) Upgrade Line 2 to the 6+ using its upgrade. You can do this in-store or online through Verizon or Best Buy. It doesn't matter what you do.
2.) As soon as the 6+ is active, drive to a VAR and activate the old iPhone 5 on the Line 1.
3.) Once you get home from the VAR, power off both phones and swap their SIM cards. This will put the 5 back on Line 2 and the 6+ on Line 1.

By doing the above, Line 1 will keep its upgrade. When you are ready to upgrade again (either Line 1 or 2), just transfer the upgrade to Line 2 and order the new phone (this will have to be done online through Best Buy or Verizon).

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hello Everyone!

Here's my current setup:

Line 1: UDP (Upgrade Available, Transferable) Moto X 2014
Line 2: Basic Plan, Dumb Phone (No upgrade) LG VX5200
Line 3: UDP (Upgrade Available, Transferable) LG G3

Wanted an iPhone on Line 2.
I was on the process of transferring the upgrade from Line 1 to Line 2, but it told me I would lose the UDP and my Family Plan will be converted to More Everything plan. I want to keep UDP on two lines (1 and 3) What is the safe option? Appreciate any help. Thanks!

You can do it online through either Verizon or Best Buy and not get hassled. You'll keep your unlimited and not change plans. You'll just give Line 2 its own tiered plan.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Thanks ducoccer10!

1) What is VAR
2) Will the Verizon store create any issues with the suggested step 1 as I do not feel confident of doing it online myself?
3) Can I cancel Line 2 after the above process and will I have any impact to the UL on Line 1

Regards,
MS

Thanks for the info. Do I need to wait for the pending data plan on Line 1 to go away before I put the old iphone on Line 3 with the new SIM? (Line 1 -- dumb phone used for upgrade, Line 2- UDP -- now using the new phone with old SIM, Line 3 -- dumb phone that i'd like to put old smart phone on without being obligated on the data contract).

1) VAR = Verizon Authorized Retailer. It's a non corporate Verizon store that tends to be easier to work with than regular ones.
2) By upgrading a tiered line, it's perfectly fine to do it in store.
3) You'll have to pay the ETF on line 2 if you do that, but it won't affect line 1.

I'd strongly recommend waiting until the pending activation falls off the account before doing anything else to your lines.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I have a Droid mini (mini SIM card)

I am actually thinking of getting the new DROID Turbo instead of the G4 since it has better battery.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I was wondering how exactly to know if the pending activation is still on the line and I found from an earlier post of yours:
1.) Log into Verizon online
2.) At the top hover over "My Verizon" ---> "My Account" ---->select "My Plans and Services"
3.) Select your line
4.) Click on "Add/Change Features"

If you can add features like Mobile Hotspot, then you do not have a pending activation. "

I don't see "Add/Change Features" at that point. Has it been changed to "Manage Product & Apps"? Clciking that offers to let me add things like Visual Voice Mail, Verizon Cloud, and Mobile Hotspot. I added Free Verizon Cloud to a dumb line that I didn't order phone on. Does that mean the pending activation is off even though I only put the old SIM in new phone yesterday? Thanks so much for your repeated help.

Edit-on "my verizon" app I can click "Manage Features" but "Manage Plan" gives a (13000) error.

Your edit shows the error as you cannot really do much with the line until the pending activation falls off. It will take about a month to do so.

It doesn't matter what phone you get as the process is the same:

1.) Transfer the upgrade to your mom's line and order the phone you want. Have it shipped to home from either Best Buy or Verizon
2.) When it arrives, activate the phone following the directions that come with the phone
3.) Wait at least an hour and make sure it works as normal
4.) Power off the new phone
5.) Reactivate your mom's old phone on her line by logging into Verizon online
6.) Now power off your phone and activate the new smartphone on your line using the SIM card that came with the phone. You can do this online through Verizon.

So I have one question: Which SIM card do I use when activating the phone on my mom's line? The SIM card from her phone?
