[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Does this work with multiple lines on your account as well?

Yes, but there might be better methods depending on the composition of your account. How many lines do you have? What type of data plans and phones are on them? Which lines have upgrades? Finally, what new phones are you looking to get?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I have 3 lines.

1 (mine) Note 2 UDP Upgrade available
2 (husband) iPhone 6 Plus UDP Upgrade Available
3 (daughter) iPhone 5c TDP - on Monday, I used her upgrade to order an iPhone 6 from Best Buy, because I thought Verizon would do away with the option. The iPhone 6 will be a surprise birthday gift on the 29th, for my daughter. IPhone 6 will be kept on this line.

The iPhone 6 is sitting at my desk, at work. I wasn't planning on activating until her birthday.
But from reading, I see the best option is to transfer upgrade from UDP to the TDP.

What should I do? I guess I'm willing to find a way to activate the iPhone 6, without my daughter finding out, if needed to transfer upgrades.
Or should I just go the Best Buy route, and order the Note 5 using my UDP line?

Thanks

The transfer upgrade is definitely the best method as it avoids a pending activation. See what happens if you try to transfer an upgrade to Line 3 through Verizon or Best Buy. Does the system allow it to happen? If so, you might be able to do the transfer upgrade right now. Worst case scenario is that you activate the iPhone, but leave it powered off until her birthday.

Thanks! I'll try that. So even if I have to activate the 6, as long as it's off, the 5c will still be activated?
Sounds like a plan!

Thanks again!

It doesn't quite work that way, but you might be able to just bypass the 6 and use the 5c for activation purposes. Does either system allow you to transfer an upgrade to Line 3?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So now that I know the upgrade options for subsidized phones are still there I'd like to undo my upgrade and return the phone. Got the iPhone6, but would prefer the iPhone6S when it is available. I have the phone and have not activated it nor opened the box. It looks like I have 14 days to return it and there is a $35 restocking fee.

Concerns:
-Will upgrade remain on the line it was transferred to (TDP) and still be available after return?
-Will VZW still offer subsidized pricing (2yr contracts) on future phones? Doesn't look like it. Looking at pricing from VZW on Note 5 (from AC post), there is no 2-yr contract pricing, only 24 months or full retail. So our upgrades are still good but only for current models as of 8/13/15?

Update: I see the Verizon Note 5 at Best Buy available for upgrade as a Pre-order(as mentioned in previous posts as well). Hope that option works and is still available with iPhone6s when available.

I have a similar scenario and questions. I transferred an upgrade from L2 UDP month to month to L1 TDP (upgrade eligible 10/16/15) I refused delivery from Fedex and the iPhone 6 is on its way back to Verizon. Hopefully I will avoid a restocking fee and the upgrade will be restored to L2 and not remain on L1 so that I can attempt the 4ever method when the iPhone 6s comes out. I really don't want to call Verizon right now and would like to stay under the radar. What is the track record for upgrades reverting without customer intervention?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Verizon Rep just informed me that transferring my upgrade would cause me to lose unlimited data, so I left the store and came to androidcentral :)

Similar to everyone else, I am also trying to verify the best way for me to keep my UDP:
Trying to get a Galaxy S6 Edge on L1.
L1: LG G2 - UDP - upgrade available
L2: iPhone 6 - UDP - upgrade available
L3: iPhone 6 - Tiered Data Plan - no upgrade available

Will transferring my upgrade through best buy work best for me?

Thank you very much.

Is there anything we can do with the upgrade from the basic line (Line 1)? Transfer that to Line 2 as well, and upgrade the phone for Line 2?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

OK, here is my situation:

Line 1: UDP, I currently use a Moto-X 1st Gen (bought for "full price")- Upgrade Available (since I have not used an upgrade in order to keep my UDP)
Line 2: 2GB Data plan, Wife is using my old Galaxy Nexus (she broke her LG G2)- Upgrade Available in October 2015
Line 3: 2GB Data plan, LG G2- Upgrade Available in October 2015

I'd like to get the Galaxy S6 on Line 2. Could I transfer my upgrade to Line 2 (using either VZW website or Best Buy) and have it shipped to my home, destroy the SIM it comes with and pop in the Line 2 SIM (after cutting it)?

If yes, what would happen to Line 2's Upgrade Availability afterwards? I was planning on using that when it became available in October to upgrade my Line 1... will the Upgrade Date be changed?

Thanks!

Unfortunately, I have no idea. My guess is that you will need to call Verizon if the upgrade is not restored by the end of next week.

1.) Through either Verizon or Best Buy online, transfer the upgrade from Line 1 to Line 3. Order the S6 edge and have it shipped to home.
2.) When the S6 edge arrives, go ahead and follow the activation instructions as you'll be activating it on the tiered line (Line 3)
3.) Wait at least an hour and make sure the phone works. Test calls, texts, and data
4.) After an hour, log onto Verizon and reactivate the iPhone 6 on Line 3
5.) Now activate the S6 edge on Line 1

Unfortunately, you cannot transfer the upgrade to Line 2. There is a method that works by using the upgrade on Line 1, but never actually activating the smartphone on the basic line. Instead, you activate directly onto Line 2.

Thanks. Anyone else know? I will report the status as things move along. kckadow - any updates on your progress would be helpful as well.

Transferring the upgrade from Line 1 to Line 2 through either Best Buy or Verizon will work fine. There is no need to destroy the SIM that ships with the S6 as it will be programmed to Line 2's plan.

By going this route, you will upgrade Line 2 and put Line 1 in a new 2 year contract. It will have no effect on Line 2's upgrade in October.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

holy mother of pikachus.... haven't read this thread in a long time and it has spiraled out of cosmic proportions. More than 10,000 posts discussing the same thing? :)

I just have one question: is Verizon simply stupid and can't find a way to plug this loophole or do they simply not care? :D

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

The end goal would be to upgrade L3 to a Note 5, and then update L2 to a iPhone 6+, so that seems like it works perfectly.

As far a L1, upgrade to the 6+, and then activate it directly onto L2? Would I need to swap sim cards, or anything like that with the iPhones?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

does this method work by ordering through Verizon Wireless? I tried to do it at bestbuy.com the only option is to pick up at the store. Through Verizon Wireless online, on the last screen, it asks me to pick the new data plan to go with the upgrade. How should I proceed?

Well for Line 1 I am currently on month to month... no contract. Will I be forced onto Tiered Data for Line 1 or will it be a new 2 year contract with UDP?

That's exactly what you would do. You would take the SIM from Line 2 and put it in the new phone ordered from the upgrade on Line 1.

Which method? Some work through Verizon and others can only be done by a 3rd party store.
