[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I purchased upgrade on L2 Tiered plan and activated new phone on that line. It was active for about 12 hours. I switched L2 back to original phone no problems.

I went to add new phone to L1 UDP and when swapping sims realized that the new phone has a nano sim and old phone does not, so what are my options?

1. Can I activate new phone on L1 with installed nano sim even though it was upgraded through tiered plan and not lose udp?

2. Should I get a blank nano sim from somewhere else to be safe? If so where?

You can activate the phone with the SIM that was shipped with it. You'll end up reprogramming the SIM to the unlimited plan. Otherwise, you can always take the phone to a VAR and they will activate it for you.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Can someone confirm I can do the following...

Line 1: Galaxy S5 with UDP , no upgrade avail.
Line 2: Galaxy S5 with UDP, upgrade is avail.

Can I order a GS6+ from Best Buy online for Line 2, choose the basic plan (I guess small), the when it arrives, not power it up, destroy SIM. Place SIM from Line 1 in it and power up. Never touch the phone on Line 2. And st

That's the way to go; though, you might need to cut the SIM depending on the size in the GS6+

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

OK Guys - DuSoccer, specifically... :)

I've been following the thread a bit, dropped off, and am back and am getting confused with some of the back and forth.

I have the following:
Line 1 - Samsung S4, UDP, no upgrade
Line 2 - iPhone 5, TieredPlan, Upgrade Available

Looking to upgrade LINE 1 to S6 (something). These all use new Nano-Sim cards, I believe. I believe the best method to do this is still to go to a store and have them upgrade the line, activate iP5 to Line 1 so that we have same size SIM card.

Will any of the new tiered plans get in the way here?

The other thought I had - Would I be able to simply upgrade the phone by walking in to a BB or VZW, buying a subsidized phone, activate it on Line 2 (at the store) then about an hour later, revert Line 2 to iP5 and activate new phone on Line 1.... I get confused on which SIM to use where. What happens to the Apple-specific data that is on the iP5 after the transition? My daughter is worried she'll be losing all of her 'stuff.'

many thanks!

The good news is that your daughter won't lose any of her data as just the SIM card is changing. That's why I suggested activating the iPhone 5 on Line 1. This makes it easier to just swap phones when you get home by changing the SIMs. Otherwise, you could just do:

1.) Upgrade line 2 to a S6 at either Best Buy or Verizon
2.) Drive home
3.) Power off the S6 and remove its SIM
4.) Take the SIM from the S6 and put it in the iPhone 5. Turn on the iPhone 5 and let it activate
5.) Take the S6 to a VAR for activation

I only suggested activating the iPhone 5 while at Verizon so that you can bypass step 5. All you need to do is get home, power off both phones, swap SIMs, and then power on both phones. It doesn't really matter which way you go.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Looking into upgrade, tell me if I have this right. I'm trying to avoid having to activate/deactivate anything on Line 2. I don't mind having a pending activation if it goes away on its own. I went back about 10 pages but didn't find an answer, so apologies if this has already been answered.

Line 1: UDP, LG G2. Upgrade available. <--- To be upgraded
Line 2: 2GB plan, iPhone 5. No upgrade available yet. (11/1/15)

Looking at upgrading LG G2 to LG G4 now or soon. Leave Line 2 alone for now, maybe upgrade in a month or more.

1. Via VZW website, transfer Line 1 upgrade to Line 2
2. Order LG G4 on Line 2, with 2 year contract, and 2 GB plan, with upgrade fee (bleh)
3. Receive shipment, don't turn on G4
4. Pull G4 SIM, discard G4 SIM
5. Pull G2 SIM, insert G2 SIM into G4, power on G4, activate

Net effect:
Line 1: UDP, LG G4, Transferred 11/1/15 upgrade date
Line 2: 2GB plan, iPhone 5, on 2 year contract

That will work just fine. You'll have a pending activation on Line 2 for about a month, but it will eventually fall off.

How do you know if you have a Pending Activation? The last time I upgraded it said so when trying to make any plan changes, but this time with the Basic Line I'm not seeing one and am unsure whether or not I'm safe to do a min Plan Change?

Lsst time I did it I didn't get a pending activation, so you don't always get it.

So just activating it with the SIM from a tiered line will have no effect on changing my data plans? Guess I really don't understand the purpose of the sims. Really hate going to the VAR because they are some of the most unfriendly people you can meet in my area. Always rude unless they are making some money off of you.

In its most simplistic form, SIM cards contain the phone number and plan of the phone that it is inside. This allows the phone to connect to Verizon's network. However, Verizon allows its SIM cards to be reprogrammed to a different number and/or plan. Verizon's online system allows you to request this reprogram. In your steps, you'll end up requesting the SIM to be reprogrammed from the tiered plan/phone number to the unlimited plan/phone number.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hello

I just pre-ordered my the Note 5 on Verizon through the best buy sight. I have an UDP on this line. It said I could keep my current plan, which I thought was a glitch. I did the early upgrade, paying monthly, and i think they want me to turn in my phone to verizon for this. can anyone verify?

How do I make sure i keep my current UDP with the phone?

I also pre-ordered so there is no way for me to ship it... Should I make sure they don't turn the phone? And do the steps once I leave.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Best route?

Line 1 - Unlimited Data (Upgrade available)
Line 2 - dumb phone (Upgrade available)
Line 3 - dumb phone (no upgrade)

Just making sure that I won't get a charged data If I upgrade against line 2 or 3.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Not sure why you would do the monthly payments totaling the full price of the phone, when you can buy the phone subsidized for half the full price. And still keep UDP. If paying full price, you may as well play it safe and but it retail from BB. You could even use the 12mo free interest financing. I actually did that on the $450 I spent for the GS6Edge+ 64gb. And I also got the cart item that to keep my existing plan. They never even offered me an option to select any other plan. I printed the contract for Keeping Existing Plan, and it looks kosher. (I did the upgrade on my existing smartphone UDP line only which was upg-eligible) Now I sit back, wait for the phone and pray I don't lose UDP.

So here is the BIG question on my mind and may answer what everyone should do when they receive it. The responses in the forum say NOT to activate the phone with the SIM card, destroy it, then insert the SIM card from old phone. So does the phone power up automatically when you open the box??? If so this may be a trick by VZ to auto activate the SIM card shipped in the phone and screw us out of UDP. I saw this unboxing video that shows it powering up: Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus Unboxing - Dangerous curves ahead!

So my solution to avoid this and be cautions is to take the box unopened to an underground stop on my PATH (subway) train in NJ where I don't get signal, then unbox it, remove the SIM, then insert old SIM. If phone tries to power up before I remove the new SIM, it cant activate underground in the tunnel.

Dusoccer,

THanks for your response. I pulled the trigger last night. I ordered a GS6e+ via the Upgrade on Line 2 and it allowed me to keep existing data plan even though I bought it subsidized. I now intend to keep the phone for Line 2 instead of move it to Line 1. Can I keep it for Line 2 without issue? I will inseet the original Line 2 SIM from my old phoen tot he new phone when it arrive. Please confir,

thanks!

I have not done anything yet. I am going to make my decision over the weekend, but will likely return my iPhone 6 next week. Hopefully the upgrade will revert back to the UDP since the phone was never activated. Luckily I have other upgrades available, but would hate to have one thrown away. I'll update when I know. Let us know what happens with yours.

Just an update on a return. I transferred an upgrade from L2 UDP to L1 TDP last week Tuesday (8/11/15) using the 4ever method through the Verizon iconic portal. After it was confirmed that the loophole for upgrades, subsidized pricing and 2 year contracts was still open for grandfathered customers, I refused delivery on a phone that was scheduled to be delivered last Thursday (8/13/15). I tracked the device back to Verizon and they received it yesterday. The good news is that my upgrade was automatically restored to L2 UDP without having to call Verizon and the contract reverted to month to month. I still need to confirm that all of the charges (activation, restocking, subsidized price on device) are reversed - hopefully without calling Verizon.

I watched the same unboxing video, however since then I've watched about 3 or 4 more and one of those was a vzw and it does not come on automatically. You should be OK.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I have a question regarding the upgrade via BB method. I only have one line and it's a UDP. I pre-ordered the S6Edge+.When I get the phone I just take new sim out of it and put old in correct. That's all I should have to do to begin using the phone and keep UDP?

That's fine too. Since you upgraded on Line 2, you could hypothetically call Verizon to activate the device. However, you could also do it yourself either online or moving the already active SIM.

To avoid the pending activation that gets placed on the tiered line. With a pending activation you can't really contact Verizon if an issue arises. Nor can you make any plan changes. When using a tiered line, if you activate the upgraded phone on the tiered line there is not a thing Verizon can do to your unlimited. If you activate directly onto the unlimited line, there is always a chance of Verizon "catching" you on the upgrade.

Correct. Just make sure they ship the phone to home as you cannot do it in-store.
