[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I also pre-ordered so there is no way for me to ship it... Should I make sure they don't turn the phone? And do the steps once I leave.

If they turn on the phone you will lose your unlimited data. It is very risky what you are doing since the Note 5 is not being shipped to home. I would be highly surprised if they let you leave the store with an unactivated phone.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Correct. Just make sure they ship the phone to home as you cannot do it in-store.
Most likely you can make up a story that the person it is for is out of town and you have to wait to activate it or you want to give it to them for a present. If they say no.... You just leave and cancel the order.

Sent from my Note 4.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Best route?

Line 1 - Unlimited Data (Upgrade available)
Line 2 - dumb phone (Upgrade available)
Line 3 - dumb phone (no upgrade)

Just making sure that I won't get a charged data If I upgrade against line 2 or 3.

Yes, as long as you activate the new smartphone directly onto the unlimited line, you'll bypass any data charges on the basic line.

Cool, transferred Line 1's upgrade to line 2 for S6 Edge + yesterday via VZW's website. I will destroy the sim card when received. I appreciate your help.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hi All,

After pages and pages of this thread, I "think" I have it sorted out how to upgrade and keep my UDP. I'm hoping that you guys can help me out if any of my steps are wrong. Here's what I'm working with:

L1: UDP (Upgrade NO) <--Want to upgrade this to Galaxy S6
L2: UDP (Upgrade YES)
L3: Dumb Phone (Upgrade YES)

I feel like I have a bunch of options but I'm looking for the one that keeps my plan the same without adding data to the dumb phone L3.

Option 1) If I understand correctly, I can transfer the upgrade from L2 to L1 via ordering through BB and Ship to Home. Then when the phone arrives, take out sim from new phone and put in L1's SIM (I believe I will have to cut my SIM - Going from HTC one M7 to Galaxy S6). After that, turn on the galaxy S6 and it should be good to go?

Option 2 Take upgrade from dumb phone L3 and apply it to L1. Presumably this adds the $30 additional data per month which I don't really need but ultimately could use if its my last resort. This way I could also upgrade L2 at a later date using the TDP that would get added to L3 by default?

As far as the actual steps of upgrading on the BB site, which Line # do I enter to start the process? I'm assuming I enter the Line that will be the upgrader line (L2 of option 1 or L3? of option 2) It will take me to a section where I shop for the phone I want. I then select the phone I want (Galaxy S6 64GB) and then it says "the plan no longer exists, you will have a 2GB data plan, etc." Then when I continue, it takes me to the 2 year upgrade section. After that i'm taken to the "add geek squad protection, etc" and "add the phone to your cart". I'm not sure what happens after that as I was a little hesitant to continue.

I really don't want to lose my UDP on either of my two lines and I'm hoping some of you guys who have done this already can help me out. I appreciate it! Thanks!

I have a friend who works at BB that is going to make sure they don't turn on the phone.

So once i receive the phone, take the sim card out, put my sim card in, and it should run right?

That would definitely work.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I have.

Line 1 - UDP Upgrade Available, Galaxy S4
Line 2 - TDP, No Upgrade Available, 4GB plan (twice the data promotion)
Line 3 - TDP, No Upgrade Available, 2GB plan
Line 4 - TDP, No Upgrade Available, 2GB plan

I want to upgrade Line 1 to the Note 5 and want to verify that this is correct.

Option 1
1.) Through either Verizon or Best Buy online, transfer the upgrade from Line 1 to Line 2. Order the Note 5 and have it shipped to home.
2.) When the Note 5 arrives, go ahead and follow the activation instructions
3.) Wait at least an hour and make sure the phone works. Test calls, texts, and data
4.) After an hour, log onto Verizon and reactivate the old smartphone that was on Line 2.
5.) Now activate the Note 5 on Line 1

I choose Line 2 because that is my wife's line, Line's 3 & 4 are the in-laws so I'd need to add them into loop of what I was doing. Will doing this on line 2 have any affect on the twice the data promotion?

Option 2
Upgrade Line 1 though Best Buy online - ship to home.
When the phone arrives, take out sim card and destroy it. Put in sim card from my S4 and power on.

Is that right?

You are correct that both methods will do what you want. The thing about option 2 is that the Note 5 will probably come with a nano-SIM. This means you will need cut the S4 from micro to nano.

Transferring the upgrade should not affect the double data promotion; however, you could always do it with lines 3 and 4 if you want to include your in-laws.

Thanks,

At what point on BB site do I do the transfer?

Thanks,

Doing some digging and I think I don't have that option on BB site, maybe because I can buy it using a payment plan... Anyway, I transferred the upgrade on Verizon's site to Line2 but that's not being reflected on BB site. How long does the syncing usually take?

It doesn't sync. Once you leave Verizon that upgrade reverts back to the original line.

I think I was confused, I thought I could transfer the upgrade on either site but had to make the purchase on BB site. Sounds like I could have transfered on verizon's site and completed the purchase there?

Either way, I just decided to go with option 2 and I'll use my current sim card (after trimming).

Thanks again.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So my boyfriend is with Verizon and currently has the S4. He's been wanting the S6 ever since it came out but he has the UDP and wants to keep it. However, I am with a different carrier and have no access to his Verizon account but want to get him the S6 as a surprise birthday gift. I don't mind paying the full retail price for the S6. Will the Verizon store sell me the S6 for the full retail price and if it does, is it better for me to go to the store and buy it or is it better for me to order it online through Amazon? Also, I know the SIM sizes are different. Can he just get a new SIM from Verizon w/o losing his UDP or will he have to cut the S4 SIM down?

If you buy the device at full retail, it won't matter if he gets a new sim or cuts down the old one. He'll still be able to keep unlimited. Cutting his old one just saves you from going into the store.

If you do go into the store verify with the VZW employee that he will be keeping unlimited data. This is just a precaution. Mistakes can happen and it is best to be on top of things. I wouldn't worry too much.

In regards to purchasing the device itself, it depends on the store, but some are reluctant to sell devices without contracts. They shouldn't be, but it happens.

Amazon is a decent choice, but if I was buying a device off contract and pricing was the same, I would order online. However, use this site instead:

https://preorder.verizonwireless.com/iconic/

1) Select NEW CUSOMER (don't worry...you won't have to become a customer)
2) Select: ORDER DEVICE WITHOUT SERVICE
3) Change the option UNDER select wireless device from SHOWCASE DEVICES TO ALL DEVICES

I like ordering direct from the website because if you have an issue, you can go directly to Verizon Wireless and/or a store for support. You may even be able to do an exchange directly in a store, even though you ordered through the website.

Amazon's return policy is usually pretty decent too, but I would still order directly from Verizon if price is the same.

I like using the preorder.verizonwireless.com website since it is much easier to buy a device off contract.

Good Luck.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

read about 40 pages worth of this thread but im still not sure what needs to be done in my situation. my situation is

L1 - galaxy s4 with UDP, upgrade available today
L2 - basic flip phone, no upgrade available until 10/11/15

I did a quick dry run of the process trying to use best buy method, however best buy is not giving me the option to transfer the upgrade from the UDP line to the basic line. the only upgrade option for the basic line is monthly payments which obviously isnt what i want. I am able to transfer the upgrade from UDP to basic thru verizons actual website and get the note 5 on 2 year subsidized price on the basic line, but the price on verizons website for the note 5 is a 50 dollar difference than that of best buy and best buy is even throwing in a free wireless charger which is cool. since the upgrade transfer option isnt present in the best buy method i do not mind going thru verizons website and buying the note 5 thru there. but i have a few questions before i do this.

1. if i were to go thru verizons website, i will transfer the upgrade to the basic line and purchase the note 5 on the basic line and have it shipped to home and not power it on and swap sims immediately correct? i also read something about having a pending equipment order that is placed on the basic line if the order was thru verizons website. will that pending equipment order put a freeze on the basic line or will the line still be able to be used with the original flip phone it is currently associated with? also, i read that the pending equipment order will typically vanish within 30 days correct? there is no big risk of losing UDP or having to be stuck with a $30 2gb tiered plan for 2 years on the basic phone if you just do the simple sim swap? also, i would have to cut my current sum as it is a micro and it needs to be a nano for the note 5, would your method of going to a VAR immediately after receiving the phone and having them activate and inputting a nano sim card work with no hitches? i understand i may have to pay them for switching the sims for me but i dont really mind.

2. instead of doing this online, would it be possible to go to a VAR instead and have them do all this for me? that is what i did back in 2013 when i got my S4, however it seems like the last 2 years verizon closed a lot of loopholes. i would just tell the VAR rep that i would like to transfer the upgrade to the basic and purchase the note 5 at subsidy and then transfer the note 5 to my UDP line? theres a lot of VAR's in my area but i would like to know if it would be easier to go to a VAR and just have them do it. i know each VAR is different and some are willing to do it and some will not. if a VAR does the upgrade i still risk the chance of losing UDP based on human error on their part without getting it back correct? are there other cons to going into a VAR and having them do the legwork for me instead of doing it online?

which method should i do?
i prefer the best buy method as it is cheaper and gives a free charger, but it doesnt give me the option to transfer the upgrade from UDP to basic.

verizon website allows the transfer but it is 50 dollars more and i would have to cut the sim from my S4 micro sim to a nano sim or take it to a VAR and have them activate and put in a nano sim with my UDP credentials into the note 5, and im not sure if the purchase equipment order will create some road blocks on the basic account. but if this method has a good success rate i wouldnt mind doing it

going the VAR route is actually what i was thinking of doing since the best buy method does not work. can you please advise which method would probably work given my situation? thanks again for your help!!!

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Awesome!! Thank you so much!
One more question.. I'm most likely going to buy the phone online through Verizon with the suggest site you gave me. Would it be better if I go get him a new SIM or let him cut his older one with a SIM cutter?

Cutting a sim isn't too difficult, but I've wrecked one before by doing a lousy cut job. If you have the time and aren't opposed to going into the store, getting a new sim would be safest.

A lot of the newer phones come with sims pre-installed, so it's possible the new G6 may already come with a new card.

Once you get him the phone, he should be able to login to his account online and activate the phone. I would also recommend that he logs in online after activation, just to verify that he still has unlimited data. Again, this is just a precaution, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

I've bought two devices at full retail and been able to activate online and keep unlimited data both times.

I've also updated the URL in my original reply. It should be:

http://preorder.verizonwireless.com

If it goes directly to the main verizonwireless.com website, try typing the address directly in the browser window:

preorder.verizonwireless.com

If you don't mind, please post a followup, after you give him the phone. I'm sure he'll be happy. Let me know if you have anymore questions.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Oh that's great!! I had no idea they came with a pre-installed SIM. Thank you so much for your help and I will definitely post an update after he gets his phone!
