[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

When I bought it they had a promotion going that gave out $150 BB Gift Card. I was a little leary about it because it might "highlight" my account so I'm waiting a few months before I use it. I was perfectly content with the new, subsidized phone - the Gift Card was hot fudge with a cherry on top.

You bought it in store or online?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Not what I asked though. I can't believe people are thinking that transferring the upgrade from a UDP line to a TDP line then doing nothing else would affect any contract.

You are correct, the transfer does nothing. You need to order a phone on the TDP of course and then approximately 48 hrs later the UDP contract will extend.

I don't think anybody does

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

It does work if you follow the instructions.
Single Line UDP with no contract.
Ordered Note5 from BB online yesterday. Phone delivered today. Cut down micro sim from my Note3, installed in Note 5 and it fired up without a problem. Checked my account on VZW...shows my Note5 active and I still have UDP.
when you cut it did u san dit to make it thinner?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I really hope you're right dusoccer10! I was part of that glitch last year and I hope my contract changes when either the phone is actually shipped (by fedex) or when I activate it. If not then this "glitch" is still very real. I will certainly let everyone know once I get the phone (DT2).

I just transferred my UDP upgrade to a TDP line, ordered a V10 from Verizon, activated on TDP, switched TDP back to old phone, put UDP SIM in V10 and voila. My Verizon shows the V10 on my line, shows I still have unlimited data, and shows a contact end date of 10/2017. It works. (I'm typing this on my new LG V10 btw).

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Thank you.

For line 1, can I just go to the VZW store and say I need a new sim card because I bought a used Note 5 and want to use it on my line?

For line 2, I thought I read that if I upgrade a line with a dumb phone to a smartphone, they will tie the data plan to a 2-year contract, is this not true?

Line 1 will not work that way as they can see you used an upgrade and have a pending activation on the account. Verizon will push through the plan change if you go to them. Now, if you went to a VAR, they may be willing to activate the Note 5 for you.

With Line 2, you will not get tied into a new data plan because you never activate the SIM that ships with the new phone. It's the same principle of what you are trying to do with Line 1. Destroy the new SIM and use the old SIM. By doing this, you never actually get the new data plan because the new SIM is never activated.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I received my Note 5 yesterday with UDP still intact until 11/4/2017. I also told a friend about this and he picked up a $1 phone and his account is UDP intact until 11/6/2017. He was on a family plan and not the primary line (but he did order the phone as/for the primary). I can honestly thank the people on this thread for helping me out. I had been trying for weeks to get the upgrade and had given up because the BB site was not cooperating. When I posted here on the site about the problem, someone asked for a screen shot of the weird error message that I was receiving. I tried one more time to get the screen shot and found the site was working for me. To the person that helped me, and many other people that helped me, I say Thank you! You have two very grateful people that will never forget your help!

While there are no guarantees, following the instructions posted here have shown results. No need to be gun shy.

Or, how about this. I don't need unlimited data. So if I choose to one of their monthly plans with 6 or 12 gig, ( which would be the same or less than I am paying now) then purchase the best buy phone with a 2 year contract extension ?

Yes you can switch to one of the new plans and upgrade via 2 year subsidized pricing,

Thanks for the confirmation! This is what I'll be doing once I get my turbo 2. It better come before the 15th!

I'll try again. But the oh-so knowledgeable gal at BB said the $249/ 2 year contract was not good on the monthly pick-a-size plans, just on extension of my current plan.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Oh I forgot to ask....I have an upgrade but still a year left on udp contract. Would that screw up bb method?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Just have some patience as this will work. All you need to do is the following:
1.) Since you moved the upgrade to your sister's line, when the phone arrives just follow the activation instructions that come with the phone. The SIM cards are different between the 3 phones in play here, but that is ok. The Droid Turbo 2's nano SIM is already coded to your sister's line. That's why it is ok to use and activate it.
2.) Once you activate the Turbo 2, test the phone to make sure calls, texts, and data all work. Make sure you wait at least an hour as this will give Verizon's system a chance to update.
3.) After an hour, you need to log into My Verizon online. On the main page, scroll down to My devices and select "activate/switch device"
4.) Choose your sister's line.
5.) Select activate device and activating a device that has been used on this account before
6.) Just follow the rest of the directions to reactivate the S5 use the SIM that is already in the S5.
After these 6 steps, you'll have activated the Droid Turbo 2 and reactivated the S5. Now, it's time to move the Turbo 2 onto your line:
7.) Go back to "activate or switch device" and select your line
8.) Select activate a device that has never been on the account before and enter one of the bar code numbers from the box of the Turbo 2.
9.) Follow the rest of the directions to get the Turbo 2 onto your line.

T - 2 hours until I meet up with my sister to begin following the steps outlined!

I'll try again. But the oh-so knowledgeable gal at BB said the $249/ 2 year contract was not good on the monthly pick-a-size plans, just on extension of my current plan.

Here is the math:

2 Year contract
$1920 ($80 x 24 month) for 12 GB plan + $960 ($40 x 24) for line access fee + $250 phone purchase price = $3130 over 2 years

Payment plan
$1920 for 12 GB plan over 2 years + $576 ($20 x 24) for line access fee + $624 ($26 x 24) for phone = $3120 over 2 years

If you just wanted to look at monthly payments before taxes:

2 year - $120 a month ($80 + $40)
Payment Plan - $126 a month ($80 + $20 + $26)

Either way, Verizon is going to get its money. The only real different is how much do you initial pay. 2 year contract requires a higher initial starting point. The payment plan only requires taxes and should be significantly cheaper.

It shouldn't; though, it will only extend your contract for an additional year. In other words, if you upgraded today, your contract would expire 11/7/2017.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Thanks dusoccer10 for all your posts! I do have a question I didn't see before, and would definitely appreciate it if you could shed some light. You can skip to the last paragraph for the ultimate question but the rest will give background to help troubleshoot:

I was able to order through Best Buy and transfer my UDP upgrade to a TDP line. Once I received the phone in the mail, I activated it on the TDP with the SIM that came with it and then reactivated the old phone with My Verizon. When I tried switching the new phone to my UDP line with My Verizon, I received an error message. I tried doing the same thing with every other phone on my account and I got the error for both my UDP line and the TDP line I transferred my upgrade to. The other two lines did not give me such an error.

In light of this, I decided to cut my UDP phone's SIM card so that it would fit in the new phone. After some worrying, I did this and everything seemed to work fine. I was able to make and receive calls, texts, and data. I double checked my plan and the contract dates, this is two days later and I see that the UDP line still has unlimited data, and the contract is still reading 2017. The new phone is now listed as the current device on my UDP line's number. But I checked and I am still having the same error when I try to use the My Verizon device activate/switch function, not that it's a big deal to me right now.

The only problem I have left is that for some reason imessage won't activate using my phone number (it's not even listed), and when I look at "My Number" in phone settings I see "unknown". After trying a whole bunch of things like resetting various settings, playing with airplane mode, etc I can't get the number to change or imessage to work. I tried waiting like Apple support suggested, and I even did multiple complete device resets - with no luck.

The only thing I can think of is that something is going on with the SIM card I cut, and maybe I should try a new one. But my fear is that asking Verizon to give me a new SIM card (especially one a different size than the one my account says is in my iphone) is going to screw me out of my UDP. This made me think, what if I ever needed a new SIM in the future? Am I really stuck with the SIM I cut forever? If I ever need a new SIM card for my UDP line, what are the chances Verizon will look at/change my UDP?

Yes, this sums it up perfectly, but one error. In your second calculation you have $ 20x24 = 576, it should be $480. Thus, BestBuy=Fail.

- that's the problem, that you realize; BB has a $40 monthly fee rather than $20, and the extend-a-contract doesn't work otherwise If I want the pick-a-size plan.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Costco should have this phone in about a week, does anyone know if they have any better way for this to work for me? - see above post.
