[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I thought you HAD TO not use a new subsidized plan on the same account at all. Sell it or switch it with someone on a different account of change numbers no?

It looks like if you put a phone purchased via UDP upgrade on a UDP line, the UDP line gets converted to 2GB TDP.

But in my example, the upgrade would come from a TDP line. TDP line upgrades on schedule, activates, the uses it on a UDP.

Has anyone on slickdeals done it? I would be hesitant if it came from same account. I could be wrong though.

Not that I've seen. Just a thought though. My TDP line doesn't have an upgrade available for me to try.

I think I have read on this thread that it has been done. Hard to figure out what is actually being said sometimes but I think I read that. Don't want to go back and look though.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

In September, 2015, I did the following based on the forum's advice (DUSOCCER10):

Originally in Sep 2015:

Line 1 - Had Galaxy Nexus UDP, upgrade available
Line 2 - iPhone 5, TDP, upgrade available

>> Used the Line 2 Upgrade to Note 5 and then swapped the Note 5 to Line 1

The Current Scenario is:

Line 1 - Note 5 on UDP, upgrade available
Line 2 - iPhone 5, TDP (contract is now extended until Sep, 2017)

Now, I would like to transfer my upgrade from Line 1 to Line 2 and then Upgrade Line 2 to an iPhone 6S+. At the same time, I would like to keep my UDP on Line 1 with Note 5

1) How can I do it?
2) By doing above, will my contract for Line 1 extend by another 2 years from today's date?
3) My Billing Cycle ends on Dec 7 >> Will I be charged an extra $20 for the Unlimited Plan if I were to do this in the next couple of days. If yes, is there a way to save this $20 Unlimited hike?

Thanks a Ton!

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I tried upgrading last night. Transferring a basic line upgrade to a tiered data plan phone and it wanted me to change my plan from nationwide talk and txt to something else. Can I go on through the purchase and not have to change my plan?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I was thinking of doing this but not sure it it will work. My wife has the S6 edge(TDP), my sister has the note 2.(UDP). The only one that has the upgrade is my sister. Now from what I have been reading from the post you guys has been posting. I guess the BB way wont work so this is what I was thinking. Switch my wifes phone with my sisters so now she will have my wifes phone which is the phone she wants. Now I will go to BB and transfer my sisters upgrade to my wifes line and order and the S6 edge and just keep in my wifes line. Will that work and will I still keep the UDP?

Well. . . poo. I'm on a super old legacy Verizon plan with my mom. Both UDP lines. Upgrade available soon. I wonder if we both order through Best Buy, she orders the subsidized phone I want, I order the subsidized phone she wants, and we switch phones, will the 'infected' IMEIs be negated? Since we'd activate them on a different line but under the same plan? Thanks for active thread. We'll find a way, yet again.

Don't think so.

The "toxicity" of a subsidized phone seems to apply to other lines on the same account. If the phone is moved to a completely different account, then original owner's UDP seems to be OK.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hello and sorry for my naivety I had no idea of the changes in these loopholes for keeping UDP. I have read most of the thread but still have some questions I am hoping the experts can answer for me. I currently have a UDP line that is out of contract, month to month. I also have a basic dumbphone line on the same family plan with an upgrade available. My question is can I use the dumphone upgrade at BB to get a new subdizised smartphone and then switch the new phone over to the UDP line without losing my UDP?? Please elaborate on the Nov 15 changes that affect this and any possible known alternatives. Thank you so much in advance!!

The "short and sweet" seems to be if you get a subsidized phone on any line in an account, and then activate it on a UDP line on that account, the UDP goes poof. Playing games with SIM cards no longer works; it is the subsidized phone itself that is "toxic" to UDP.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Thanks for the response and summarizing it for me, that helps me out in understanding this mess. So I take it the ONLY way to add a new phone to my UDP (and keep it UDP month to month) is to buy a new phone at full retail? What about if I buy a used or refurb 4g lte smartphone on ebay or amazon and have verizon give me a new SIM card for it and then switch it to my UDP line....will that work and I still keep my UDP? Thanks again!!

That would be fine.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Wouldn't it be better to get the sim from a third party?
Some people don't want to spend the few bux. Either should work. Buying a sim from a third party would be safer, but many people have gotten a sim from Verizon without problems.

I did this method to get the note 5 on my wifes TDP upgrade.
So i had S4 and she had the note 4. after the note 5 was activated on her line, i tried to switch it with mine at the vzw website. it didnt let me. so i ended up calling vzw. and said i need to swap phones with each other. so the note 5 came in my number and s4 in hers. then she just changed the sim to her note 4... my acc still shows unlimited. only change showing is the upgrade date on TDP is 2017.
