[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hi all! I know that everyone's situation is slightly different, so I'd appreciate any feedback on mine:

Verizon Family Plan:
L1: UDP Samsung Galaxy S5 - Upgrade eligible - Contract expires 4/11/16
L2: TDP iPhone 5S - Upgrade eligible - Contract expires 5/31/16

Goals:
1) Upgrade L1 to Galaxy S7 without losing UDP
2) Avoid $20 / month additional fee for UDP
3) Get S7 at subsized rate ($199)

Based on this, what options do I have available to achieve my goals? They're in priority order, so if needed, I will pay full retail price for the phone to keep my UDP.

Thanks in advance for the feedback!
2 is impossible.

1&3,upgrade the tdp line to the s7 on contract, activate it on tdp line first then activate it on the UDP line

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I still have a dumb phone which is eligible for upgrade. I have an unlimited line but need a new phone. I have an S5 currently and it's been flickering on and off then will black out completely. Are there still any loopholes to maintaining my unlimited data and somehow upgrade dumb phone?

Thanks in advance.

So..

L1 UDP (contract ending soon), no upgrade available.
L2 Dumphone (contract over?), upgrade available.

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hi all, would also appreciate some feedback regarding my particular situation.

2 years ago I did the best buy trick. Upgraded my UDP phone, recieved the phone in the mail, swapped out the sim card before turning it on and UDP was preserved.

Now, I have that same phone and VZ is telling me I am eligible for an upgrade (best buy also indicates I am eligible for the upgrade through the website)

I would like to buy the s7 at the discounted price through BBY and do what I did before: swap out the sim with the old card before turning it on to preserve my plan.

After reading through the thread I am getting the impression that switching the sim no longer works? Is that true?

If so than is the best way to upgrade through best buy and sell the phone away without a sim and buy another at full retail?

Yes and yes.

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I was helped here to do an upgrade without loosing my ud plan back in june (Transfered my upgrade to another line on my account and then swapped back the new phone to my line ,an s6 see page 419 on this forum). Everything went fine but also somehow none of my upgrades were effected after it was all said and done. Well it seems things have gotten a bit more complicated now. Once November 15 came around I started getting the extra 20$/month charge on my ud line kinda sucks but whatever. Since I still some how have an upgrade on my line (even though I transferred it to another line on my account and used it in june last year, perhaps someone can explain this?) id like to get the S7.
Now, it seems my only options in order to keep ud data are transfer upgrade to another line on account, sell the upgrade once I receive it (without turning it on and destroying the sim card) (would this cause a pending activation or something else on my line?) and then use the money from the sold upgrade phone to buy a new s7 OR use an upgrade from another line with a tdp and then activate that phone on my line correct?
Do I have any other upgrade options? does the fact that I'm now paying the extra 20 a month for ud give me another option?
As a side note the line that I transferred my upgrade to in june used their original upgrade this January to get in iPhone 6 and the charges for the upgrade went to my line (cost of new phone) but nothing else was effected not sure why it went like that.

Thanks for all the help

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

You can do device payment plan

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

If I do device payment plan does that mean I'm stuck with that phone for 2 years? if so id rather just pay full retail for the phone. I think my best bet would be transfer upgrade and sell phone then pay full retail for a new phone.

You can buyout the device payment plan anytime after the phone ships, even before you receive it if so desired. You can do this as many times as you like.

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hmm ok I just saw the promo they have going on that makes the device payment plan actually seem better, ill get the free gear s2 watch if I buy the s7 on device payments before 3/18 correct? would I be able to sell that (I don't really want it) or is it attached to the line?
Also one thing I don't understand is under the device payment FAQs it says "For smartphone lines on The Verizon Plan using the device payment program, the monthly access charge is $20". Does that mean theres an additional $20/month fee just for using the device payment plan?
Is there any extra monthly fees/interest if I do the device payment plan over buying the phone full retail
If not, and I can sell the S2 watch ill think ill end up doing it that way

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Anyone have any advice on this?

Thanks..

Yes you will get a s2 watch. The line access charge is $20 for the Verizon plan for off contract or on dpp. So no price increase. You can sell the watch if you want.

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I did the new BBM and got an Iphone 6s plus 128gb for $299 and as soon as it was delivered I never turned it on or anything I just destroyed the sim card, then sold it for $850 on swappa. Extended my contract and hopefully avoided the $20 increase for a good while. Now when the Note 6 or some other awesome phone comes out ill just pay full retail. So far everything is good just have a pending activation on the line but ive read that it will just fall off in a month or two.. Ill keep you all posted.

Can someone please help me understand why #2 (avoiding the $20 / month fee) is impossible? My understanding is that I only incur the $20 / month fee if my contract expires. Is the issue that there's no way to extend my contract and keep UDP? Please confirm if my understanding is correct:

  • If I allow my contract to expire, I will start incurring a $20/month additional fee to keep my UDP
  • If I extend my contract on my UDP line, there is no way to do so and keep UDP
  • Therefore, the only way to maintain UDP is to allow that line to go off-contract (which defaults to +$20/month)

Check this forum out read the first page...
http://slickdeals.net/f/7743625-ver...a-2-year-data-plan-on-a-nationwide-basic-line

I would recommend doing the Best Buy Method and Sell your Phone. That should extend your contract and youll avoid $20 fee and you'll be able to put the money you get from the sale towards the new S7. But beware you might still get the $20 increase and be stuck with a 2 year contract with a $50 data fee or worse loose your udp. your results may vary.

Yes you will get a s2 watch. The line access charge is $20 for the Verizon plan for off contract or on dpp. So no price increase. You can sell the watch if you want.

Thanks for all your help just one more thing. Im looking at my bill and i have the Nationwide TLK&TXT share 2000 (had same plan for years) with 5 lines on the account and it says each line including mine is paying 9.99 monthly line access charge. If i do the dpp will that 9.99 increase to 20$? and if so for my line only or all the lines on the plan? and would that increase to 20$ be permanent or just until i pay off the phone on the dpp.
If it would increase to 20$, then again im not sure if id rather do the upgrade on my ud line with dpp or transfer the upgrade to a td line and sell the phone. What do you think is the better option for me.

Best thing to do is read the first post here: Verizon - How to Use a Subsidized Upgrade and Keep Your Unlimited Data Plan Or Avoid A 2 year Data Plan on a Nationwide Basic Line - Slickdeals.net

It covers pretty much everything.

Forgive my ignorance but I don't understand the wiki. Specifically this part?

You can do the 4ever Method if you have a line situation like this (you can have additional lines too):

L1: UDP 3G or 4G LTE phone Yes
L2: TDP 3G or 4G LTE phone No

What do the Yes / No Stand for? Available Upgrades?

My account is like this:

L1 UDP 4G LTE - upgrade available
L2 Basic Dumbphone - upgrade available
L3 TDP 4G LTE - upgrade available

Can I just buy a phone on the TDP, then activate it, then activate it again on my UDP account?
Can I then transfer my UDP upgrade to the TDP and get another phone?
Please help!

Definitely let us know what happens. I have a line going out of contract in August. Hopefully I can avoid the increase.

On the nationwide plan (a few generations old), then the line access is $10 for that tier regardless... It won't go up.
