[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hi guys. So I am trying to upgrade through the Best Buy method + sell the phone to keep my UDP. However, when I try to purchase the upgrade on the Best Buy website, it tells me "Keeping Existing Plan" is not available and asks me to remove it from my cart, which in turn removes the phone from my cart. Anyone experience this or know a workaround? From what I've been reading in this thread, it should go through with no issue? Thanks in advance!

I don't think it makes much difference what you choose. What happens with your plan is more based on what you do after you receive the phone (don't boot it up with the included SIM card, don't ever activate on your plan).

If you want to keep her upgrade available for her use later, then that is exactly what I would do.

Thanks for the feedback. Regarding the order for these two steps, should I:

(1) purchase the S7 at full retail and activate it on my account first, then do BBM to extend my contract
(2) BBM first followed by retail purchase?

I'm currently planning to go with (1) because I'm concerned that (2) will leave a PU on my account for a while that would prevent me from activating any other phone. On the other hand, should I be concerned about doing BBM on my UDP line that already has an S7 activated on it (this would be the case under scenario 1)?

hmm well oddly enough it doesnt even give me any opportunity to change anything with my plan. when i get to the "upgrade eligibility" page, it tells me that if i have an UDP, it will be changed to a 2gb/month plan for $30. the error doesn't come until after clicking all the way through and trying to check out - that's when the "remove - 'Keep Existing Plan'" error occurs and tells me to remove it from my cart - which starts the whole thing over again. any ideas?

Here's my situation

Line 1 unlimited galaxy s5 upgrade available

Line 2 unlimited galaxy s5 upgrade available

Still under contract with both. Want to get the s7 on both lines. Can I upgrade line 1 and activate on line 2 then upgrade line 2 and activate on line 1?

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Question: if both are s5 and have unlimited then why don't you just upgrade each without switching etc......

Yes, but if you ever accidentally mix up the phone/sim combos you will lose unlimited.

You'll also have to wait at least a month between the two upgrades until the pending activation falls off the first line you use for the upgrade.

The safest thing to do would be to sell both phones and use the money to buy new ones outright.

A direct upgrade on each line would result in the loss of his UDP.

anyone know a work around to my issue?

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Really??? I didn't know that... I thought that as long as a customer pays the $20 fee for unlim data, the customer is free to upgrade without fear of losing their unlim data....am I wrong??

You will get a PU on your account, so if you don't want to wait, scenario 1 is the way to go. I don't know why it would cause problems using your upgrade even with the S7 already on your line, but it is Verizon, so who knows.

He is still under contract and not paying the extra $20 for UDP. If you are not under contract and paying the $20, or have a business contract, you can upgrade without losing UDP.

Yes, but only on Device Payments.

Really? I'm upgrade-eligible on all 3 lines (two are UDP, one dumbphone) and am out-of-contract for 9ish months; paying the $20/UDP line (see my comments recently). Can I now directly upgrade without giving up UDP and moving to a TDP? Thanks for any confirmation (and info on how I ensure this is the case to avoid having to play undo-everything...)

Yes, that is correct but the "upgrade" they are giving you is nothing more than paying full retail price for the phone via the Device Payment Plan (DPP).

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Ok, so I'm back to my original question - can I upgrade to S7's, perhaps using the dumbphone line as I used to (which is upgrade-eligible) and then transferring the phone to a UDP line? And can I do it a second time, transferring an upgrade? (Or much more painfully, upgrade dumbphone -> Sell S7 -> use proceeds to buy new S7 -> activate on UDP) And will this "upgrade" just be device payment plan, which is just pay-over-time aka financing? Or is it a subsidized phone in exchange for a contract, as before?

Or should I bite the bullet and give up UDP in order to upgrade? 2 smartphone lines + 1 dumbphone, 700 min family plan, paying the $50/m for UDP lines already. Generally use only a GB or two a month, but on occasion when traveling (or when we had a week-long fiber cut) can use much more (6-12 GB/line in a week). Haven't wanted to take a risk of losing that flexibility so far.

If you are already off contract AND are already paying the extra $20 per line... you can "upgrade" directly on each line without losing UDP. But as said.... that "upgrade" is nothing more than paying full retail price of the phone spread out over the Device Payment Plan.

So there's no way to get an old-style "subsidized" upgrade, even if I had been eligible for one before the $20 increase? If so, then it simplifies things -- though a bummer from a $ point of view; paying the old "subsidized" rates (and $20/month above that per UDP line) without getting every-2-years subsidized phones that was the flip side of the higher rate you paid.

I'm hoping that's not still the case, so long as I'm willing to renew the contracts on the lines for 2 years to get the subsidized phones. But maybe I missed the window.

I'm not a 100% sure but I think of you do the phone payment plan they drop the $20. But I could be wrong. I'm sure somebody else will chime in.

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Even with phone payment plan, you still get hit with the $20 fee....the only thing that keeps the $20 fee off is still being under contract....
