[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I have been trying to catch up on this thread. I thought I knew what to do.....not anymore!
Line 1, UDP, still under contract
Line 2, UDP, still under contract
Line 3, TDP, eligible for upgrade
Line 4, TDP, still under contract

I planned on getting phone through Best Buy with line 3 upgrade, activating it for couple days. Then go to Verizon and swap with line one. This has worked fine in past without losing UDP. Am I reading correct, that it will no longer work?

I don't see an issue with your plan, but I wouldn't set foot in a Verizon store if I were you. I believe you can transfer the phone between lines remotely using the website or calling the automated system.

Are you attempting to also extend the contract on L1 or is your only objective to get a subsidized rate for a new phone on L1 and preserved UDP?

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Line 1: UDP, upgrade date, 9/29/2017
Line 2: UDP, upgrade date, 9/15/2016

Suppose on 9/15 I order a new phone with promotional pricing from a 3rd party. The contract is renewed for 2 years. The phones arrives, I destroy the provided SIM, and insert the SIM from line 1 into the phone. The assumption is that UDP is preserved on Line 2.

The question is: will I dodge the $20 plan hike on Line 2 or will that increase from $30 to $50 on the next billing cycle?

thanks in advance.

That should work fine. But if you ever put the phone on line 2, you will lose UDP on that line.

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

This is correct - Verizon now associates the upgrade with the phone IMEI (mainly that now). Found out when i went to talk to a VZW rep in person and thats what was exactly out of his mouth "The IMEI is the phone i have here in my hand" (tried to play it off like i bought it off CL)

No cosco super close to me but that sounds like thats a no go too though because i dont have a TDP (throttled/timed/??? data plan?). Both my lines are UDP and like to keep them that way.

For those who are asking about getting back UDP im currently trying to do that. Last time I did this 2 years back when the BBM worked i accidentally activated the SIM that was provided with the new phone. All I had to do was return the phone and wait for an email saying that the issue was resolved then try again.

I tried the BBM this time around but didnt know about the IMEI (jumped in before looking back at this thread - assumed it still worked). Returned the phone no problem - called in to verizon and the CSR said they submitted a ticket to change back to UDP and the turn around that i should expect is 3-5 days.

So -

No TDP then no subsidized price? Have only 2 lines, both UDP

Purchase another line then transfer that phone over to a UDP then discontinue the new TDP line?

You can use the subsidized phone from one line with the sim from the other line.

Subsidized phone from line 1, use with sim from line 2, and vice versa. But if you ever put the subsidized phone from line 1 onto line 1, bye to UDP.

Or you can get the subsidized phone and sell it for enough to afford the full price for the phone you want.

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

You can not use subsidized phones on any line anymore. I believe you will keep UDP on line 2 but will lose it on line 1.

This is incorrect. You can't use the subsidized phone on the line that the upgrade came from. But you can use it on another line, even on the same account, without affecting either lines' UDP.

Just to get subsidized phone!

It is my understanding that this has changed. If you use a subsidized phone on an UDP line you will lose UDP on that line. Verizon now checks the MAC address of the phone.

Lok52 is correct. Only the UDP line that the upgrade was transferred from would be at risk of losing UDP.

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

In this case IIRC the guy had two UDP lines and no TPD lines. So doing this method he risks losing it on one of those lines. If I am recalling the wrong one and he had a TDP line then I am wrong.

..if subsidized by a UDP line's upgrade.

To re-clarify -

I have 2 UDP lines, both are eligible for an upgrade. If i use bestbuy to order my phones (SHIPPED) and just swap the sims (FROM MY CURRENT PHONES) into the other line (L1 SIM goes into L2 phone, L2 SIM goes into L1) then both UDP's stay intact?

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Just tried looking for the answer, not sure if I'm mis remembering. Here goes. I have one line w/ UDP. The plan is to order the s7 for in store pickup and have the employee give me the phone without activating (I think people had this happen). Then I destroy the Sim and have the employee exchange the phone. Then I put my current sim into the new phone. This should prevent my price hike, correct? More interested in that than the new phone tbh

If you use your UDP line to buy and phone and activate it on the same line, no matter which SIM you use, you will lose your UDP. Been that way for a little while.

Let's say the employee swap the phone itself so now I have a brand new IMEI than whatever was scanned to be on my order. I should be fine with that right? New IMEI plus old sim, new IMEI is not the same as the original order.

I guess you could try it and let us know. Haven't heard of anybody doing that.

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hello, did a search on google about keeping UDP with an upgrade to s7. I currently have a galaxy s5. I have an upgrade on my line and therr is an upgrade on another line as well. I have read that ordering the S7 at bestbuy and having it sent to your house will work by cutting down my S5 sim card and using that for the S7. Has anyone tried this? I want to do the 2 year plan. I know I can go on the monthly installment plan and keep unlimited. If anyone has had anything work please let me know. Thank you in advance.

Is the other line UDP as well?

You can't order through Best Buy and simply swap the SIM any longer without losing UDP (the IMEI of the phone will be linked to your account). That's why many people in this thread are purchasing through Best Buy, then selling it and buying another phone at full retail price.

If your other eligible upgrade is on a TDP, there are other options available.

..if subsidized by a UDP line's upgrade.

Would you mind helping me with these questions? I'm beyond confused right now...
(didn't help that I just spent the last hour reading most of the last 200 posts in this
thread :( )

(1)
I have a Note 5 that was purchased using Verizon's Device Payment Plan on
another line with 2gb TDP on the same account. Is there any danger if I put my
UDP line's SIM card into this Note 5?

(2)
what happens if I buy a S7 or S7 edge from eBay or Swappa? If the seller
had purchased it from Verizon using subsidized upgrade 2-year pricing, am I
going to lose my UDP by inserting that SIM into the new phone?

(3)
I just logged into my Verizon account and looked under upgrade devices.
Apparently my unlimited data line(contract ending in November 2016) shows
"early upgrade available" and it allowed me to purchase a new S7 edge using
device payment plan. It didn't ask me to make any plan changes. I proceeded
with the order, up to the last page, but did not submit the order. What would
have happened if I did finalize the order? Would I have lost UDP and that added
a device payment plan to that line?

Thanks for your help!

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

It is my understanding that you can use a device payment plan with UDP now since you are technically paying full price for the phone in payments.

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I have one UDP line that was upgrade eligible. Last week I purchased a new S7 through BB and had them ship to home. I received the phone for the subsidized price but my contract date wasn't extended. As of this morning I still have my unlimited data. Has this happened to anyone else?

Also, if I take the phone to BB (after taking the sim out) and ask them to exchange it for an S7 edge and just pay the difference, will they do that? Then I could put my current sim card in that phone and be clear. Will this work?

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So I'm trying to figure out a handful of items...

1. Is there any way to get your current contract extended so that the $20/month extra cost for unlimited data won't be imposed? I have until May before my contract expires and my bill will be $20 extra per month after that date.

2. I'm assuming after reading through all the posts that we are now out of luck to use our upgrade (purchasing subsidized phone) and still maintaining the unlimited plan.

3. Is it possible to sell you unlimited line to someone and how difficult is it? Aka is it worth the effort. Not sure I can justify paying $20 extra/month where I only use about 10gb/month (never turning wifi on).

4. Any other creative ideas for either getting a subsidized phone and keeping unlimited or extending your contract and not paying the new $20 extra charge. As to get both of these wishlist items seems impossible anymore.

Any input is welcomed as I did the BBM as a result of this this thread 2 years ago. Thanks for the help.
