Is a Droid Turbo/Maxx just as good as a Nexus?

These are versions of the Moto X phones with upgraded specs. They run almost a near stock skin. The only differences seem to be -

1. capacitive instead of soft keys
2. no unlocked bootloaders (no custom roms)
3. extra Moto sensors and features like Active Display, always on voice etc

They seem to get updates pretty fast from Google, even on Verizon. #3 is a big benefit though.

I'd say that the main disadvantage is the Verizon bloatware, some of which you can't disable unless you root. It's difficult to know how much that bloatware might interfere with performance.

Also, consider that the 4.4.4 update for the Droid Maxx seemed to come with a number of issues, while the 2013 Moto X has been less problematic.

I would love a Nexus 6 on Verizon as rumored, but the Moto software additions are really useful, and if Verizon doesn't end up getting the Nexus, I might just go for a Droid Turbo as it'll be the next best thing.

Google can easily sell the Moto X as a smaller Nexus

Last year, they had to commission the N5 from LG, and due to price limitations LG had to cut back on some components. That's how we got the G2, the phone the N5 should've been (in hw specs).

This year, the new Moto X is a perfect match for a Nexus phone. Google can easily release Shamu as a 5.9" phone and a rebranded X as a smaller alternative.

Sounds interesting, I guess they should.

Just to add a little clarification, the G2 was on the production roadmap well ahead of the N5 (i.e. the N5 was based off the G2, not vice versa).

Wasn't that earlier rumor? That Google could rebrand the Moto X to a Nexus 6 if it didn't sell as expected? I thought I had read that about a month ago... That they would create a Moto S (Shamu) and a Moto X..... Shamu would be the Nexus 6/X and Google would wait and see how the 2014 Moto X sold and decide what to do from there.

Other than a few small Motorola exclusive things.... I'd say the 2014 Moto X pretty much is a Nexus like device.... Just probably a little on the higher end price wise (You can still get a Nexus 5 with similar specs for $100 - 150 less)

Won't a Moto X Play be a Nexus w/ a 5.2" screen?

One of my pet theories is that the XT1092 will become the Moto X play edition/nexus X.

I've heard the Moto Nexus referred to as the "play." Maybe it's a play version of the supposed Moto S. I dunno.

A Nexus version of the X seems almost pointless to me for the reasons you mentioned. If it's substantially cheaper, then that would be a good move. If Moto drops the price like they did with the 2013 X, then it really doesn't make sense.

If the 2014 Moto X was $399 for the pure edition and I didn't want the 5.9 inch SHAMU I'd get the Moto X pure..... at $499 I'd just get a Nexus 5 for $100 less with basically all the same specs.... (or $150 less if you can live with 16 gig)

There is still some value in the 2014 Moto X at $499..... just not enough for me personally....

Lots of people want a 5.9" Nexus.

Re: Google can easily sell the Moto X as a smaller Nexus

No, because the Moto X is a good phone due to the Moto softwares, which is the primary reason for me to buy it. If the Moto X didn't have it's unique features I wouldn't have bought it, so taking them away takes away what's good about the phone.

Google Nexus 6 Lifehacker claims all L devices will have Moto like features

All the New Stuff in Android Lollipop

""OK, Google" Now Works Even When Your Phone Is Off"
This one will certainly be interesting to see when everyone's phones have this feature. It apparently requires hardware support, which means for now it will be limited to the brand new Nexus 6 and Nexus 9. However, according to Google, any device with support for "digital signal processing" can enable this Moto X-like feature."

""Where supported by hardware" (an unclear distinction that may refer to anything with an accelerometer or gyroscope), Lollipop will now wake up when you pick up your phone. Or, alternatively, you can tap the screen twice."

Not sure where they get this as I don't see it on Motorola or Google blogs.

nexus 6 same as the droid turbo

looking at the specs, they both seem to have the same or almost the same specs, so what does it come down to, just one being a nexus and the other droid with Verizon skin?

They share the same SOC, ram, and screen resolution. Pretty much everything else, including size and design, is different.
