Is anyone going to get rid of the Evo for the Epic4g?

I am strongly considering the Epic.

I bought my Evos on launch day, so that 30 day window to return it is long gone. I will have to pay full retail.

But I am having a really hard time getting by without a keyboard. I need to be able to type without looking, and you just can't do that on a touch screen.

Plus, all the best touch screen keyboards (swype, shape writer) seem to be missing keys (or you have to go to an alternate screen or something to get to them) that slide out keyboards have.

For example, the Epic has a dedicated number row at the top, and has direction arrows too. That makes for faster typing, and you can even do it without looking.

In addition to all of that, I am bummed by the camera design on the Evo. It sucks that the lens gets scratched up when you sit it down. Not to mention the poor quality video recording.

And then there is the whoel battery life thing. Super AMOLED screens are supposed to be awesome for battery life.

The graphics and benhmarks and all of that are pretty much gravy. But I am really interested in the keyboard, camera, and battery life.

Oh yeah, and the video MMS. I can't send video MMS for some reason with my Evo and Sprint support has no idea why. Hopefully the Epic will work as advertised.

i dont know if the battery life is "awesome"

but im getting about 8 hours out of my evo with typical usage, the battery seems to get better and better every day..

ive heard mixed reviews on the battery for the samsungs, typical phone battery life, if u check the reviews..

im def going to check it out on launch.

but i got a feeling that with 2.2 the evo is going to SMOKE the comp.

I returned the Evo within the launch 30 days when Epic was announced. That said- I highly question some of your reasons - the camera lens looks to protrude at least a bit on the Epic as well- http://www.engadget.com/photos/samsung-epic/#3129890so that point is probably moot- the SAMOLED probably won't save much battery life- the ambient sensor is more aggressive IMHO than the Evo and you'll probably turn it off- and bump up the brightness thus it's a wash.

I don't know about the whole touch typing on a handheld- but I do type faster with a keyboard... I just don't know that I can say the epic is RETAIL PRICE better than Evo- in my position I have nothing to lose, and if I'm not feeling the Galaxy is Epic worthy- I'll get an Evo that will have froyo by Epic's launch... but for someone to ditch a good phone and have to pay retail... yikes. You better really love that phone is all I'm sayin.

My battery life sucks on the Evo. 6 hours tops, and this is pretty light usage by my standards, with 4G turned off.

The main attraction to Super AMOLED is supposedly the battery life, with better viewing in sunlight than regular AMOLED.

People keep saying the Evo will smoke the competition when it gets Froyo, but the competition will be getting Froyo in the near future too. The Epic is rumored to possibly even launch with it, and Froyo ROMs for the Galaxy S have already leaked. So I would not count on the Evo "smoking" it just because the Evo has Froyo.

We'll just have to wait until the Epic is released before we can know for sure which device is better. But I can say right now that most (if not all) of the things that bug me about the Evo appear to have been fixed on the Epic (keyboard, video recording quality, camera scratching when you sit it down, battery life, sending video MMS, better video output).

so what did you end up doing? just returned the phone and used your own sprint phone for the mean time? or just cancelled completely and your going to sign up again later?

id say get your EVO replaced, my battery life is way better and 4g is not available here.

im standing by my comment that the evo will smoke or stay with these phones. the thing is what i stated earlier, this phone is CAPPED, it is bogged down with sprint bloat ware, the other makers/carriers had time to learn from the evos mistakes (GPU for example), but that doesnt mean the evo cant be fixed, look at the nexus with JIT and 2.2 it BLOWS away any of the NEWEST phones with OLDER hardware..

now look at the evo, its a POWERHOUSE, ready to be unleashed, its just bogged down with a software that it was rushed out with..

Your Evo may be bogged down with bloatware, but mine is rooted and running a clean ROM. Also, I have 4 Evos on my account, so it's not just mine with the crappy battery life. None of us can make it through a day without a charger and/or extra batteries.

You can stand by your statement all you want, but I also stand by mine: The Evo isn't the only phone getting Froyo. Yeah, the Evo will probably get better once it gets Froyo, but so will all the other phones out there that are getting Froyo, including the Epic.

It doesn't make any sense to say, "The Evo will improve when it gets Froyo" and not also say "The Epic will improve when it gets Froyo."

We'll see how the phones compare when the Epic is released. But, like I said, the main things that big me about the Evo appear to be fixed on the Epic. And some of those are hardware issues so there is no way Froyo will fix them (which the Epic is getting Froyo anyway, so they would still be fixed there even if it was an OS issue).

these are smart phones with large touch screens, you want battery life then get a blackberry, we dont buy these phones for battery life.. you should know you have to charge them before your day is done for sure.. people are claiming 22hrs on a SINGLE charge with baked snack rom.

id go this route.

what im saying with the speed is, epic, and so on are already optimized, more ADVANCED then the evo, the evo was the first big dog released, my argument with the nexus fits it perfectly.. look at the benchmark tests with the nexus with 2.2 and JIT.

the droidx, epic and so on are already :tuned: while the evo is not.

I'm running CM6+snap v3, no overclock (yet). The difference between stock and basically stock Froyo are night and day. Quadrant scores in the high 1200s, FPS averaging around 45-50, Neocore around 27fps. I am going on 21hrs since uplug right now.

Epic has a slide out keyboard, it's very thick, and it would cost me $500+ to buy one. The Epic would have to come with a smokin' hot blond to push the buttons for me to even consider switching. It's simply not going to be that much better to warrant the expense.

So what will you do in 3-4 months when the next hot phone comes out? Ditch the Epic and get that??

You should seriously consider hammering Sprint for a new battery. I got mine on release day and was freaked out by the battery 6-8 hours out of the box. I use my for business so this was unacceptable. After doing the suggested config changes in the forums my unrooted stock 2.1 was getting 14-16 hours on very heavy use and 28-30 on light days. On CM6 I am getting 12 hours on very heavy use and 20+ on light days. It sounds like you have a battery(ies) issue to me. Your Evo should easily get you through a work day.

Agree with above. As I type this I'm at 22 hours, 6 minutes since I last charged and my battery is at 50%. Those 22 hours have been pretty light use, but then again I still have 50% battery. On heavier usage, my phone always goes about 20-24 hours before needing a charge.

I'm running stock with HTC upates installed. I have wifi turned off most of the time, 3g is always on, and gps is always on.

You know what, all phones will have issues and you will go broke trying to buy everyone that comes out. Try sticking with one at least a year and then change up.

Why must we always follow technology? It will always let you down. The next one is always better than the one before it.

I'm well aware these are smartphones with large screens, lol. Between all the different carriers, this Evo is my 8th HTC phone over the years. This is not my first rodeo.

My last phone was a Touch Pro 2. It has a big screen too (slightly smaller than the Evo screen but sill pretty big). I could go 2 full days of heavy use on that phone before charging. The Evo uses the same battery as the Touch Pro 2, and many people (myself included) are using their Touch Pro 2 batteries as spares for their Evo. I get 6 hours out of the Evo. And that is using the battery out of my Touch Pro 2, and using it the same way that I could get 2 full days with the Touch Pro 2.

And it's not just me, everyone I know that has an Evo says the same thing, and every Evo review talked about the poor battery life too.

I can make it through the full day just fine, but ultimately it depends on how you use it, right? Not everyone I know with an Evo complains about the battery. Are you streaming live video for the whole six hours? I really have to try to suck the battery in a day, but then again, I am not constantly on my phone. Honestly, the biggest battery kill I have experienced was going to a party at a friend's where (apparently) Sprint reception is bad - the phone was constantly trying to find the network and I didn't realize it for over an hour.

I do browse the net all day. No doubt, my usage is heavy (posting from my Evo right now). But again, I am doing the same exact stuff that I could do for 2 days on my Touch Pro 2, using this same battery. And the 6 hours I get is 3G only. If I use 4G then I only get 4 hours.

I had a TP2, and I didn't get anywhere near 2 days. I had to charge at work and then when I got home and then again before I went to bed. The Evo is more like the Diamond for me -- I had to charge three times throughout the work day.

Part of the problem is that my NYC office is on the 18th floor and doesn't get a strong 3G signal, so the battery drains very quickly. It's not nearly as bad in the NJ office. But even on the weekends, with a good 3G signal at home, I'd never make it through the day with one charge on my TP2.

I'm sure some people will swap the Evo for an Epic. I won't. My only real complaints about the Evo are software related, and will apply to the Epic, too.

Neither phone will be perfect. The Evo meets my needs pretty well (see my sig).

I don't know how you use your phone, so I can't really comment on your battery life. But the Android is certainly capable of doing far more background updating that the TP2, which will affect battery life. Up until yesterday, I typically got 12+ hours out of one battery. Two days ago, I installed SetCPU. Yesterday I had about 45% battery left after 15 1/2 hours. It's simply not true that everyone with an Evo gets poor battery life.

I haven't read the whole thread, but since this is an Evo vs. Epic subject, I'm guessing some are saying they're going to switch because the Evo gets poor battery life. I'd argue that's a bit premature, since no one knows how good or bad the Epic will be.

Are all 4 rooted? Maybe that's your problem. I'm on the stock ROM, and get far better battery life than you.

I will never own another samdung phone again. Period. I love my EVO and samdung can only dream of competing with it.

Well it seems like there are a few people in here with good battery life. Let me say that you are the exception and not the norm. I have 4 Evos on my account. Yes, they are all rooted but they weren't always rooted. And I know a few more people that have Evos too. All of them have the same battery life.

In addition to all of those Evos, every single review I ever read about the Evo all said the battery life was bad. So it seems like most people have the same issues with it.

As for the Epic, true, we don't know what the battery life will be like. But we do know that it has a Super AMOLED screen, and those are supposed to be great for battery life.

I wonder if the Epic will have a widget to turn 4G on as needed or if it will make it through a day with 4G on...

We'll just have to wait and see.
