Is the pixel 2 xl's display the same as v30?

Re: Pixel 2 XL screen quality

So far the reviews say that even smallest shifts in angle result in tinting.

The link there seems to mention graininess, but points out that the photographs are exaggerated. I couldn't find the word "shift" in there or "angle" or "smallest" or "slightest", etc. From what I can tell Ron didn't say anything to the effect of, "the smallest shifts in angle result in tinting". In fact "tint" is not in the review either.

Re: Pixel 2 XL screen quality

Those pics make it look horrible with the "grainy" look. :(

To be fair, Ars indicated that they wanted to emphasize the issue somewhat to be able to properly illustrate it in the review. In real life it won't be as bad, but, it will be bad, and the issue, as with any POLED screen I've used in the past that suffered from the same problems, is that once you see the issue you cannot unsee it. Your eyes become fixated on the static grain that is all over the screen. Honestly, I've used two phones that had this exact problem, the BlackBerry Z30 and the BlackBerry Priv. I will never again settle for a screen like this unless I'm paying $200 for the device.

Other reviews state it, as do users who have had the opportunity to view the screen in person, albeit perhaps not the exact same way that I phrased it. Logically nobody will be complaining about problems with color shift at 78-degrees. With such a small screen, a 30-degree tilt is not much, and it is likely the point at which most of the reviews that complain about color shifting noticed the issue. You can also tell from the fact that I don't reference the Ars review on that comment that the said information did not come from Ars.

Bottom line is that the screen is not up to par for the price that Google is charging. Reviews also agree on this. I think the phone is still good, but for this price the sum of all parts has to add up. You are entitled to disagree but please let's not get into a back and forth bout on this.

Wow, these reviews have me really worried now...

If it bothers me that much I will return the XL and order a regular Pixel 2.

I just looked at my Nexus 6p screen off-axis, and guess what, it's got a blue tint! It's an older Samsung OLED panel (3 generations old?), but to be honest I'd never noticed the color shift before now, despite checking notifications/reading the occasional email while my phone lay on a flat surface several times a day.

Maybe my standards are low, but as long as the P2 XL screen meets or exceeds what I'm getting out of my current phone panel (and I know it will beat it for daylight viewing already) then I'm probably going to be satisfied. But clearly people should go check out devices in person if they're concerned.

It's interesting to note that the og pixel has a color shift too at extreme angles, but it's more yellow than blue. The Galaxy S8 does as well, but it's more red.

I prefer cool colors within reason. A slight blue shift is OK with me but every phone should have some gamma control or tint control.

Re: Pixel 2 XL screen quality

ArsTechnica dropped their article out stating it looks not so great on the pixel 2 XL and included comparison images of the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2017/10/pixel-2-and-2-xl-review-the-best-android-phone-you-can-buy/

So even Ars is calling it the best Android phone you can get?

Ok, everyone here needs to calm down. I think the people who pre-ordered will be more than happy. If the screen was atrocious, these reviews wouldn't be so OVERWHELMINGLY positive. Nearly every single one ends with, "if you use Android, this is the one to have".

Not this again :'( ... I returned 2 Nexus 5x because of sh**ty screens and ended up "settling" for a Nexus 6P instead that I thought was too big and had somewhat of an unpleasant yellow tint to it plus a pinkish hue when held at an angle. I jumped on the Pixel (non XL) when it came out and the one I got has a PERFECT panel imho, 0 complaints about it. I pre-ordered the Pixel 2 XL on launch thinking we'd get a premium panel with this price tag but man... This can't be serious. I'm keeping my pre-order on, I just cannot believe they would do this again on a phone in this price range. I however won't hesitate to return it and wait for next year's edition if the screen looks anything like the pictures in this thread. Google, for God's sake. Urgh.

This is definitely disappointing. If I could use an S8 on Project Fi, I think I would jump ship from it all, altogether. I don't know if I can handle the huge bezels on the Pixel 2, but it seems like that's the way to go.

Yeah I'm not so worried now. Seems like the screen is decent, just not the best screen on a phone. I can live with that.

Also reviews are calling it the best Android phone, even with the screen as it is. So it seems like it's not a deal breaker or anything.

Exactly. And almost all reviews are saying the XL is the one to get, versus the regular 2.

my s7 edge has a blue tint off axis. it's not something I've ever really noticed until I looked for it just now. what I don't know is whether the 2XL is similar or worse, or whether it happens at a smaller angle.

The question to me is more about whether or not that level of quality is acceptable in a $1000 device. I went through 3 Galaxy Nexus' before getting one with a decent screen and even that one had terrible banding. It was hard to look at. Most reviewers aren't diving into that screen. They are writing a review off of 30 minutes with the device and that's just not comprehensive enough.

$1000 for a device lacking so much display is unacceptable for me personally.

Most major reviewers received the devices by October 6th and the press embargo lifted on the 17th. That gives them the opportunity for 10 days of familiarity prior to rushing to publish. The initial hands on articles were generally done after 15-20 minutes with it, the articles we saw on the 4th and 5th.

If the only issues with the display are that the display is properly calibrated, I'm totally fine with that as I was already using the properly calibrated display modes on the last two generations of devices, so this is more of the same. I'd also state that for "$1000" I'd be pretty miffed if the display wasn't properly calibrated, especially given that O is the launch of os level color management.

I think we all need to spend some time with the device before writing it off completely, especially considering the overwhelmingly positive reviews. Even Android Police says the colors are less saturated than something like the V30, but he got used to it in a few hours.

From Kevin The Tech Ninja’s Twitter. I really need to go see these screens for myself in person.

I think once we see them in-person, and start using it for a day or two, we'll get used to anything we may or may not like.

Even though Kevin the Tech Ninja tweeted that, in his review he said the screen is "very good looking". Maybe that's not enough for some people, but hell, I'm not going to be holding this thing up to any other screens, I'm just going to use it like I've been using my Pixel XL 1.

If it is the equivalent of sRGB on on my 6p, then personally, I can't handle that. Bigger than that though is any banding at low brightness levels. I'm one of those people that reads on their phone before bed. If it looks like garbage, I can't excuse it. Even my Galaxy Nexus looked ok when brightness was turned up. But when it dimmed, that panel was total garbage due to banding.

If I was not a Project Fi user, I think I'd be waiting for the Galaxy S9. The fact that I am leaves me with the Pixel 2. I agree that people need to see it for themselves, but I've been in the Android space long enough to realize that those of you that don't care, aren't going to be bothered by the screen. And those that do care, will be bothered. No converts to either side will be won. Don't get me wrong, that's ok and fulfilling personal preference is awesome. But for me personally, the screen is crucial. It's kinda like the Nexus 5x, I can't look at that thing. It doesn't bother my mother, but this is someone that came from my old Galaxy S (the original) and said, "Well, I did like the screen on my old phone better".
