LG G3 Anyone happy with Lollipop?

Re: Anyone happy with Lollipop?

Not happy. Lost the ability to transfer files easily to computer via the USB cord. Want to go back to Kitcat

That's a first I've heard about that issue. How does transferring over wi-fi work, such as Solid Explorer? You need to set up a shared folder on your desktop PC.

I'm on the latest lollipop version, and have no issues whatsoever, however I updated to lollipop as soon as I got the phone.
Also, it's an international, so no retarded us carriers
My phone almost never gets hot, has good battery (4-4.5 hours hot) and is fluid and fast and I've had it for almost 2 weeks.

Have you disabled any apps?

Same here. The update killed my phone... and the reset was nothing but HOURS of wasted time trying to move an 8gig backup that LG made... now its currently at 9% battery after 6 hours up, with 2 hrs and 45 mins of SoT and its at 103.9 degrees F.... SEEMS LEGIT.
If there's an easier way to deal with this other than sending this phone back to Tmobile, I'd love to hear it. Because after work I might be forced to go look at the S6 since that's already out. I can't live like this for another month or two while I wait for the G4. #firstworldprobs

I had not experienced any problems with battery drain or device getting hot. However traveled to Vegas and found that while there my phone would regularly get hot and battery drain. Not sure what cause was but found that anytime I went outside the hotel I would experience this problem. I started to conclude that either the phone shifting from WiFi to cell caused problem or that switch from cell tower to another was cause. I recall having similar issue years ago with another device and when I had VZW and problem revolved around the hand off from tower to tower, it would ping pong between the towers, and was only certain situations. VZW released an update and fixed the problem. Just wondering if this is similar issue now.

Very interesting. This could explain some of the issues that are happening.

Can you do one more factory reset, then a clean install and install the apps - only the essential ones needed? And restore SMS messages using SMS backup and restore (backup first of course lol)?

I wouldn't give up just yet. Please hang in there!

Thank you for your reply, tardus. The first factory reset I did, I never restored my backup. I just used it like a fresh new phone and installed only the apps I needed to use my phone that day as I thought I would be restoring it when I got home that night. Well, with the abysmal performance I have been getting, that day has turned into a week now because I refuse to restore anything with the way this phone is behaving. I might be willing to try another reset, but I am afraid of wasting my time since I already did it once. I used the option to factory reset in the LG settings - Did I do something wrong? Was that what you meant when you said to do a clean install and only install the essential apps? I just want to make sure I've given it a solid shot before I go through the endless loop of refurbished phones.
Thanks for your help.

What I further did while trying to resolve the problem was to start turning off functions. Tried turning off Wi-Fi, VoLTE, Wi-Fi Calling, etc. Nothing seemed to resolve the problem except for putting into Airplane mode for a while, turning back on after I moved to another location. Just thought I'd toss it out there.....

You did everything right. Go to Battery usage- (System settings->Battery->Battery usage) and list the top 7 or so. For example mine is:
Screen 50%
Voice calls 18%
Android OS 5%
Android System 5%
Google Services 5%
Phone 4%
etc...

BTW how long did you have your phone prior to upgrading to Lollipop?
How is quality of your voice/data LTE in your area? Do you move locations frequently?

Also - an incredibly useful app for diagnosing problems is "OS Monitor" - free and it can be turned off after viewing. But it does require some knowledge to interpret the results. It provides process and connection information in an easy to read format.

Don't give up! If it's a software problem you'll be able to improve things enough until 5.1 is out.

I have 2 LG g3's. Both worked great, by far the best andoird phones we have owned.

Then T-Mobile sends out an up date and renders my phones almost usless.

I have factory reset, called T-Mobile, turned everything I could off and on trying to get it to work even remotley as good as it did prior to the update.

They did the same thing with my HTC-s One, their solution,.... Purchase a new phone.

The limit for small claims court in Ohio is 1,600.00. Enough to cover the cost of having to go and get new phones yet again.

This is beginning to look more and more the only option. .

It seems more than a little fishy the update comes out and ruins a ton of phones just as the new phones come out for this year

Google this:
"android 5.0.1 memory leak"

Any carrier that released a phone at level 5.0.1 is at fault. The memory leak causes problems that appear to be random.
Some apps are more susceptible than others and not everyone is having problems. Most people with the problems can get their phones working well enough to limp along until a new update comes along. This is an Android issue, but of course hardware manufacturers and carriers are also to blame.

Re: Anyone happy with Lollipop?

Nice write up. I agree with the problem of storage management being pretty much taken away from you. I can't manage what I want to save on the SD drive or not. Software says there is a SD drive but when I try to check what apps are saved to it, I see plenty of apps but show no, ire almost no, data saved to the sd drive. Haven't found a way around it yet. Also, the battery runs hot, often. I use Battery Doctor to manage the temperature. Even tried a second battery but get the same temp problems.

What apps are you running when the battery heats up? Are you on wi-fi or data when it heats up? It was good to try a different battery. Can you try a different sd card, or if not reformat and copy everything back? Which carrier? You may be able to improve things until Lollipop is fixed.

Edit: One more thing. What % of your main memory is full? It's good practice to leave lots of room in the main memory for the OS to operate efficiently. In Linux EXT4 file system for example, it's best practice to leave plenty of unused space. I know an experienced Unix administrator that suggests leaving 50% free!

Also, I wonder if having apps on the sd could be causing some of the problems.

Thank you! My top 7 are:

Screen 38% (my screen is on 26%)
Android OS 9%
Snapchat 7%
Chrome 7%
Facebook 6%
Google Play Services 6%
Android System 5%

I've had my phone since release week and it was perfectly fine up until the Lollipop update, which is why this is bugging me so bad. It ruined a perfectly good phone. My signal kind of sucks at work from the fortress that is our building, but usually I am bouncing between 4G or LTE. I don't travel often and I've worked in the same building for the past 5 or so years, so not much has changed besides Lollipop.

I will try to check out that app you listed and see if that sheds any light on what the issue here is.
I think, worst case, I might have to revert back to KitKat and hope that solves some problems because everything worked fine prior to Lollipop.
I even went to the Tmobile store on Friday and he suggested NOT getting a refurbished phone because he said I'm not the first G3 owner who's come in with complaints after Lollipop. :-[

The battery usage looks good.
Is you main memory close to full? I suspect some of these post update problems may be caused by full main memory. System settings->Storage see the "Total space". I like leaving 50% free for good performance. This is probably way more than necessary but the file system needs some spare room to operate efficiently. Also check SD. Leave some space free there as well.
Do you have apps installed on your SD? I think 5.0.1 might not play nice with apps stored outside of main memory.

Also try this. System settings ->Apps-> at top..DOWNLOADED-ON SD CARD-RUNNING

See the "RUNNING" column. Any apps using too much memory? This could indicate that an app is causing problems, and should be disabled.
Also note the phone memory -
-System
-Apps
-Free

When free memory is low, reboot. Rebooting often may help things. Note the numbers above. After rebooting compare, there should be more free memory.
The memory leak may be sucking up the ram and causing the overheat issue.

If you install OS Monitor, Go to the app's settings and check off "Show CPU usage" - you'll find a little graphic monitor in the app tray that will show you real time how CPU usage. In the app under "Process" you can see real time how much CPU apps are consuming. Very useful stuff and might be of help. When done using OS Monitor, in the upper right there's the three dots. There's the option to EXIT which is a good idea to use.

You may be able to identify an app that is churning CPU usage, so it can be disabled. Also - since you have mediocre reception during the day that could explain it. 5.0.1 may be using excessive battery hunting for signals.

Keep in mind our version of Lollipop WILL be fixed (the memory leak among other things). The only question is WHEN.

So I really love Lollipop 5.0.2 on my Sprint LG G3 but I do have 2 issues so far. I keep getting "Unfortunately Google Play Store Has Stopped" and "Unfortunately Google Play Music Has Stopped" whenever I try to open the app to access my music, it will not let me. So far everything has been GREAT on it. But maybe the ram does get high at times. I'll include screenshots.

My internal storage has 18.40 GB free and the SD card is almost completely empty (29.12 GB free out of 29.16). I downloaded OS monitor and now see the CPU gets up to 80% usage without anything open at times, and I'm not entirely sure why yet. I just disabled/uninstalled a few apps and force stopped a few others to see if that will help at all.

Also worth noting, I noticed the Tmobile My Account app using up to 40% of the CPU at times, with the battery going over 100 degrees F. So, I turned that one off as much as it would allow without being rooted and I haven't seen it come back on in the last few mins. The battery heat is finally dropping now, back down to 93 degrees, so maybe that app was just a mega CPU drain.

I have around 1GB, or a little more, free for RAM.
Besides the random apps I have stopped, I think it might also be the excessive searching for signals that is causing things to really drain the battery. I've been at work for 2 hours and have dropped 50% in battery already.
In the meantime, I bought a new, longer charger cable to hold me over until this is fixed. :) Thank you for all the suggestions, I really appreciate it and will continue to monitor more closely from now on.
