LG's promise of faster updates?

I'll believe it when it happens. LG doesn't get the benefit of the doubt with their track record. Guaranteed timely updated is one of the reasons I've mostly used Nexus and Pixel phones over the last few years. Never had a phone ruined by a software update. My Essential PH-1 saw several updates that improved the overall experience.

Because it's easier doesn't mean the OEMs will do it faster.

They are likely to especially due to the pressures from consumers and negative stereotypes of slow updates, gotta change their reputation eventually...

Happens to me all the time. Windows updates cripple my laptop, reason why I have to do a factory reset annually. Also here's some examples:

Anyone else hate Oreo? HTC10

Nexus/Pixel phones are great but lack a lot of creativity in terms of hardware and features. Also, it was a slap in the face when they removed the headphone jack on the Pixel 2. A 32GB Pixel or 64GB Pixel 2 with no headphone jack or a phone with expandable storage and 256GB micro SD and headphone jack? Honestly fast updates is not worth the sacrifice, it won't do squat for me. Google is a software company and makes money by ads and services.. hence the heavy reliance on the cloud... My 2 cents... BTW Chromebooks suck, can't do nothing on it.. fast updates and security won't make up for it

There is no pressure from regular consumers though, just vocal "enthusiast" minority.

If the pressure (for faster updates, even updates in general) was strong enough, we'd have faster updates with other without Treble.

I'm not about to assume a software update will screw up my phone when it's never happened with the nearly 20 Android phones I've owned. The only time a update has caused issues was when I used beta builds.

The Pixel 2 lacks some features in other flagships but it meets more of my requirements than any other phone. Headphone jack and expandable storage are personal preferences. I don't mind the lack of a headphone jack and have had enough issues with MicroSD cards that I don't consider expandable storage a selling point. I'd rather have a 128 GB Pixel 2 than a phone with headphone jack and expandable storage. I don't even consider it a sacrifice.

No, you see that was the "roadblock".. the time and money to do it was not worth it.. now that it's less time consuming, they can do it without wasting resources. Time and money was the problem, the process was time consuming and probably costly considering how much these engineers get paid. Money and time had to be strategically allocated. Is it worth it now? Yes, it's a win win because customers will be happy and money/time isn't wasted on such a pain staking process
Either focus all their time and energy on updating the OS or spend time and money on R&D, so they could come out with new features and technology. Google = great software.. LG & Samsung = innovative hardware. Meanwhile LG help makes the Pixel line of phones which they already had the hardware for thanks to the time and money put into R&D (meanwhile Samsung makes bank selling Apple screens and RAM parts).

We are all saying the Treble makes it easier, less time consuming, effectively less cheaper to do updates.

They CAN.

But you're equating the fact that they CAN do updates faster with something unproven, that they WILL do updates faster.

Circles man. Round and round we go.

You're saying they probably won't pretty much.. well how would you know that? Can you predict my future?

False. Samsung for example only commits to quarterly security updates in the US. Granted that they have a different situation than other manufacturers with their flagships having differing hardware and one of those is homegrown Exynos at that. The Snapdragon gets less love from them.

That is a prime example of having an OEM than can make updates faster, but did not. The idea of security updates as a determining factor in majority of smartphone sales is wrong anyway. A lot of people don't even know that they're supposed to be getting monthly updates. Take a look at Pixel sales. If the promise of timely software updates was that important to the consumer, they'd be selling more.
